Baerd the Broad Champion Lore Synopsis
Baerd the Broad was not always the figure of quiet strength he later became. In his early days, he lived as a reckless marauder from the Deadlands, taking what he pleased and drifting across Peltas as a logger, hunter, and wanderer. At his side was Bucklan, a rare Deadlands elk that remained loyal through every misdeed. Together they survived by cunning and boldness, with Baerd rarely facing consequences for his actions. His life was driven by impulse, and he showed little regard for the lands or people he passed through.
Everything changed during a desperate flight across the Cloudspire Mountains. Driven from the Stormwind Wastes, Baerd and Bucklan endured bitter cold and thin air that pushed them to their limits. For the first time, Baerd faced a situation he could not control. The journey left both man and beast weakened, and Bucklan in particular suffered greatly. By the time they reached the edge of the Mistwood, the elk was frail and near death. With no safe path back, Baerd was forced to press forward into unfamiliar territory.
Within the Mistwood, they were soon discovered by the Sylvan Watchers. The sight of Bucklan astonished them, not only because of its rarity but also its deep bond with Baerd. Though wary of the intruder, the Sylvan were moved by his desperate plea for help. Despite their care, Bucklan’s strength had faded beyond recovery. The Sylvan eased the creature into a peaceful end, leaving Baerd overwhelmed with grief. In that moment, he saw a kind of compassion he had never known, and it reshaped him completely.
Haunted by loss, Baerd rejected his former life and begged to remain with the Sylvan. Though hesitant, they sensed something unusual within him, a faint connection to the Rhythm that guided their people. The ancient Grand Oak Padraig stepped forward as his advocate, choosing to mentor Baerd and guide his transformation. As a sign of respect, Padraig turned Bucklan’s body into a shining Sylvan statue, allowing Baerd to carry his companion’s memory forever. Under Padraig’s guidance, Baerd learned the ways, history, and spirit of the Sylvan.
In time, Baerd earned a place among them and joined the honour guard of Folan Silverhart. Yet peace did not last. When Corruption swept through Folan’s lands during Kurosa’s invasion, Baerd was ordered to flee. Though filled with sorrow and loyalty, he obeyed, knowing his lord’s fate was sealed. Leaving behind destruction and loss once more, Baerd carried forward both the pain of his past and the lessons that had reshaped his life.
