Thief can advanced as a Shadower or Night Lord. This specific job route is determined when you reach Level 30. For this job, you will undergo as Assassin (2nd Job Advancement), Hermit (3rd Job Advancement) and Night Lord (4th Job Advancement). Night Lord are users of Claws & Shurikens/Ninja stars. The are alike Bowmen in a sense that they need a supply of ammunition. Unlike Bowmen, Assasins have a variety of different kinds of ammo which don’t often from most foes but some can still be bought. This can be somewhat a hassle since they need to upgrade both Claw and Throwing Star to deal their maximum damage. Some throwing-star have higher damage and can be used at lower level, allowing them to deal higher damage than most jobs within their level range. They are also the most common job in MapleStory. Assassins are the opposite of Bandits where most of their primary skill focuses on 1 target but inflicting heavier damage which is great for boss raids.

Or anyone have extra set of shooting star in Delphinus? Can give it to me as I’m training. Thanks.
Hi Guys,
I came back to maplesea after so many years, and i decide to play dark lord as main character in Delphinus. Can anyone advise me how to make my attack damage high?
PS : Anyone wish to make friend otherwise i will be playing alone. Fyi, I’m guy.
Appreciate your help.
Hyper Skill levels are different from what im seeing on my new NL, Showdown Enhance is lv183 instead of 143. Reinforce is 143.
Frailty Curse is in order of Enchance > Slow > Boss instead of Boss > Enchance > SLow.
Quad is Reinforce > Boss > Bonus.
Finding it hard to follow your Hyper Skill build since they are of different levels.
MapleSEA btw, just letting you know. Also the skill names are what you wrote as the old names, so maybe they will change in the future patch.
Hey,if i want to be an assasin.Which skills should i prioritize?
What 5th job cores do you recommend?
Btw I love your blog/guides! They are incredibly detailed and helpful always!
showdown is now 5% at max level 🙁
@Jallerlnika: Thanks for spotting the error in Hyper Skill Build Guide! I have updated the Hyper Skill farming build guide for Bleed Dart and Death Star.
@ThisGame: Thanks for your feedback! I have updated Night Lord 4th Job Skill “Showdown” skill details for EXP and DROP rate.
Showdown exp and drop % is 10% at maxed level.
@hyper Skills Build Guide, farming
I think u switched bleed dart (supposed to be at 150) with Death Star (170)
Suggestions where to obtain ‘throwing stars’, I seem to have troubles finding a decent one… Drop rate is too low ;—;
@Erikuzuma: Thanks for your feedback! I have updated Night Lord Hyper Skills Level requirement. If the level requirements are incorrect, do post a comment below of the level requirement of the skills so I can perform the update more quickly.
Whoa, you actually replied! Thank you so much Ayumi!
Alright! I guess I’ll be making a Nightlord then. They look so awesome throwing ninja stars! :DD
@Woots77: I recommend to play the class you find most enjoyment. Funding can come later by selling equipment dropped from monster/bosses in free market for some meso to fund for better gear.
Hello Ayumilove,
I think you got the lvs of the Hyper skills in the wrong order. My Night Lord is only lv 159 and already has Quad Star – Extra Strike available. I checked he lv requirements for the rest of the skills and several of them are wrong. Just letting you know so you can fix it.
Hello! I’m a newbie and I am really interested in making a Nightlord. Will this class be good even If
I am unfunded? As in I’ll probably be only wearing the equipment I get from mobs/monsters. >.<
Tooltip in MSGlobal for showdown is 10% exp/drop rate.
Also why do you not use frailty curse Boss rush for the boss build?
@DarknessINC can you specify which boss doesn’t affect by Fraility Curse? It seems like it affects all bosses for me here in MapleSEA server. And that 30% ignore defense is very useful against end game bosses. hmmmm. It is an AOE ignore def skill w/o cooldown and no cast time (you can use it again whenever the boss goes out of it, unlike Kinesis’s, it is a very good skill in my opinion.
@DarknessINC: I have updated both Night Lord bossing and farming 4th job builds for better optimization!
@Ayumilove I think it applies to both. Instead of Frailty Curse, for the bossing version I would take Showdown – Spread and for the farming version I would take Quad Throw – Reinforce.
Frailty curse is just so useless right now and not taking that hyper allows u to free up a hotkey space too (I find that nightlords have alot of useful skills and run out of hotkey space pretty quickly)
@DarknessINC: Thanks for your feedback! There are 2 Night Lord builds which you can choose above. One is for bossing and the other primarily for farming. May I know which 4th job build are you referring to so I can update the build according to your experiences with bossing and clearing?
@AughMint: Thanks for sharing your pros and cons. I have added it to the guide above.
I would like to make a suggestion to change the recommended hyper skills for NL. I have been maining a NL for a while now and I find that Frailty Curse – Enhance is pretty useless. The effect it has on bosses seems negligible and it doesn’t even work on most of the bosses. Plus when it does work, late game bosses move around a lot and will probably move out of its range pretty quickly.
I find that Showdown – Spread is a much better alternative as it improves the NL’s AOE clear ability a lot.
You made mention of a guide to increase max hp after listing it as a con. I do not see any mention of it anywhere?
You forgot the Assassin’s Mark skill.
Update to pros and cons:
Pros
55% base crit rate
extra 10% exp and drop rate (half for bosses) can be boosted to 20%
Cons
Party buffs is lacking, only MW, haste, and frailty curse (you have to spend hyper points to make it affect bosses)
I’m typically to running a blog and i actually appreciate your content. The article has actually peaks my interest. I am going to bookmark your website and keep checking for brand new information.

@Ayumi
Showdown only has 10% bonus exp and drop rate now.
@JWEN
It is weird in MapleSEA. Spread Throw seems like do not hit all four lines of stars to a single boss, while in KMS all lines of stars hit the boss. You can’t see the most bottom line of stars shooting at nothing when bossing, if you see people playing NL in KMS. While in MapleSEA, you can see the most top and bottom lines of stars hitting nothing.
Does the Nightlord have any other skills that they can get on their 4th job advancement? I came back after about 5 years and things such as Ninja Ambush is gone. I know you can get the vampire skill from Ekhart, but are there any more skills I can attain before the hyper skills?
Is nightlord get nerf? his 5th job skill now cannot all star hit on boss? n is it he still top dps among the all 5th job in maple?
Showdown’s exp and drop rate have been nerfed to 10 % at lv 20.
Hi ayumi,
Is it basic cri rate for NL 55% ? Base 5%, critical throw 50%. thanks.
Hi ayumilove, may I know how NL get 65% critical rate basic. My NL only 58%, 165lvl. For NL, is it cri rate more important than cri dmg? Because my damage range gap quite far. 300k without cri, 1.4m with cri. so better I go for 100% cri rate?
@Jadeh: Night Lord 4th Job Skill “Showdown” has a max level of 20. Therefore, this skill only requires Mastery Book of 20 instead of both 20 and 30.
Hi Ayumilove,
I haven’t been playing for a while and just wanted to check on the showdown skill.
Currently is the max level for showdown 20? Because I remember it to be 30 but the mastery books in stores cannot seem to upgrade it. Thanks in advance!
@Jolly: Kindly refer to the Hyper Stat guide at http://ayumilove.net/maplestory-character-card-system-guide/ for more information. The guide has a table displaying Level 200 and Level 250 Hyper stats goal. It’s applicable to most jobs as it focuses primarily on improving player’s damage.
Hey Ayumilove, I just made a night lord for reboot using burning, I was having trouble with the hyper ability stats and what you add them on. You did however go through skills, but it’s the ability stats that confuse me, Please let me know which ones to add into and max 😀
@Yang: To increase of Night Lord quickly, create 3 decks of cards where each card should be S ranking. From there, you can easily gain 700 HP per deck (+2100 HP for 3 decks of S rank cards). For more information regarding the cards, please visit http://ayumilove.net/maplestory-character-card-system-guide/ – You can choose the cards that suits your needs 🙂
@Tear: I would recommend mastery books based on the priority set in the 4th job skill build guide.
@SuBi: Thanks for the update! I have amended Night Lord Hyper Skill “Bleed Dart” skill buff duration from 30 seconds to 90 seconds.
Need to update as bleed dart has a duration of 90sec and has a cooldown of 90sec. 😀
Hello, may I know what’s the best link skill and character card set for night lord and how to increase the hp of night lord
Thanks
Oh sorry, mistaken couldn’t remember that it was mastery books.
So what mastery books should be used?
@Tear: MapleStory does not require any Skill Books. Only Mastery Books are required for 4th Job Skills!
May I know if i should use any skill books?
Hi ayumi! Loved your channel and guides. I just wanna ask, do you mind listing down all the lists for monsters that drop throwing stars. Trying to look up online, can’t seem to find the updated one. Cheers! 😀
i’m on MSSEA so it’s a few patches behind but i’ve got some pretty good stuff from hunting now 🙂
Hey, I tried to do some research regarding showdown….I’ve read that it got nerfed to 10% exp and drop rate but here it says 30%….has it got buffed again?
@Zandatsu: You will need to hit the enemy at least once with Showdown before performing the finishing kill. The enemy must have the “Showdown” debuff activate within the period of its defeat so you can gain additional EXP (Experience Points) and additional item drops.
@Jonutty: Since the most recent patch, most potion stores sell Throwing Stars up to Steelies (2.1 mil per set for 25 Weapon Attack) and Ilbis (3 mil per set for 27 Weapon Attack). To get higher level throwing stars like Infinite Throwing Knives (27 Weapon Attack) or Flame Throwing Stars (29 Weapon Attack), you need to do crafting. (Mining + Smithing secondary skills).
Hey Ayumi! First off, I love your channel. You helped me with Maplestory a ton, making it a lot easier for me! For that, thank you.
Mushy stuff out of the way, I am curious to know how the Night Lords “Showdown” skill works. It’s supposed to give me an increased EXP Buff and Drop Buff but when I used it, it showed the same EXP as before when I killed a mob without showdown. Is there supposed to be a way on how to use it?
hey Ayumi can i ask where i can find/hunt for throwing stars that are better than steely?
just made a NL and am at lvl 124 in 2 days thanks to burning event 😀
Oh thank goodness, thought I was going dumb for a second. lol
@Sickskillz: Thanks for your feedback! I have updated Dark Harmony skill from Supportive to Passive. You will get 3 SP (Skill Points) when you reach 4th Job. The guide above recommends player to add 1 SP to Quad Star, Toxic Venom, Claw Expert and Dark Harmony before start maxing a particular skill. So you will need to level up 1 more time to gain the next 3 SP to unlock the fourth skill before proceeding with maxing the remaining skills.
Don’t want to come off as rude. Your 4th job may be outdated or I glitched. I only got 3 skill points and Dark Harmony is no longer an active that consumes mana.
@Kevin: You could try creating deck of cards and have all three as S or A rank. These can easily give you some decent MaxHP.
Hie i wud like to know how to increase max hp for night lord now?
@Crashrgnashr
Funny enough that change only affects Phantoms lol they can’t steal it.
@ryan
I can confirm that in fact it is 55% crit
is the base critical rate really 65%? isnt the base 5% + 50%?
Hi Ayumi, I’m a returning player with a NL currently at lvl 201. I think i’m pretty decent and have use the maple guide to help me train at place with monster lvl 201. I have no problem killing them but I keep getting killed. I have decent hyper body so bought my HP to 12K and have auto HP on. But can’t seem to stay alive. Any suggestion for me…been out of maple for a while so every thing is so new. BTW: What is a decent range attack for NL
Hey Ayumi, in the most recent update, Dark Harmony was changed to a passive skill. Does this change the 4th job build order? Thanks!
@Juan: I’m not able to provide advice regarding the %atk or %boss. Try using a MapleStory damage calculator (stumbled upon a person uploaded an Excel worksheet) that calculates the optimized best damage. I remember having neither the extreme of one aspect (atk%/boss%) is much beneficial when dealing high damage.
@TGLP: Thanks for the enlightenment regarding PDR and IED 🙂
@Niki: Showdown is Night Lord’s main attack for farming loots as well as training. Refer to the skill build guide above to see what order of Mastery Books to get first (e.g. Claw Expert → Showdown → …) Mastery Books unlocks the cap/limiter so you can add more SP (Skill Points) into the skill.
Hello Ayumi, I need some advice. I was thinking of making my character based on farming/leveling and change it to bossing later on when I am at a higher level. Should I even been considering using mastery books? If so, which particular skill should I use it on?
The stats on the Showdown 4th Job skill have changed [#5/31/16]
@Juan PDR is not IED
Players can’t have PDR, PDR stands for Physical Damage Reduction while IED Ignore Enemy Defence
AyumiLove i need some help or advice, Should i go %atk on claw or %boss, considering i have 36%atk on emblem, 33%atk on 2ndary & 41%atk atm on claw. About 90%pdr and 240%boss.
About 19k luk @lv 227.
@Domme: Currently Pure LUCK Assassin deals more damage plus you will not need to struggle with non-pure-luk weapons.
@Christopher: Thanks for the notice! I have updated Night Lord’s Hyper Skill Death Star cooldown from 8 seconds to 14 seconds.
Hello ayumi, first off thank you very much for all of the guide you do. The hyper skill Death Star has been changed it’s cool down is now 14 sec.
Thank you for ur hard work
@gabe and others, If you have plenty of character slots free then those who struggle with low hp can easily make a Kaiser link mule and get it to level 120 for an extra 15% hp. I hated Kaiser so I made mine during an event and did it on 4x. Less annoying that way.
Hello Ayumi, I’m wondering why aren’t I able to add my gust charm till level 19? I’ve max the rest of the skills like you do, but I only able to add it till level 15… Please help me! I’m at my wits end!
Thank you ! ~

Hi Ayumi. Just want to ask if pure luk sin still a trend in maplestory now? It used to be famous cause of the high damage.
@Ran: There are 2 skill build guides for you to choose from: Bossing or Farming-Leveling. For me personally, I’ll go for leveling, until I reach Level 180/200, then I reset my Hyper Skills for bossing.
@Nareg: There is a skill build guide for 3rd Job Night Lord with skills prioritize in specific sequence. (MAX) means to use your SP (Skill Points) on that particular skill until it reaches its max Mastery Level (e.g. 20).
@Shawn: Congrats for reaching Level 200! Not sure if you would want to train to reach Level 250 though. You might want to MAX out your damage range 2m-2m? This will use some NX Cash to get there. Otherwise, you can check out this guide on improving your damage: http://ayumilove.net/best-maplestory-methods-to-increase-damage-guide/
@Lester: It’s been awhile where MapleStory has revamped Thief 1st Job Skill “Nimble Body” which previously increases the throwing-star range but now they have already removed it. Perhaps the new Lucky Seven or throwing-star skill has a default attacking range set in place.
@MeatLoad: Apologies for the late reply! It’s basically an old skill name used in KMS non-official skill translation. “Spirit of the Star” represents “Shadow Stars”. I have updated the guide above to reflect this new changes.
Soy NL estoy en renegades mi personaje es JuniorGC. Estoy buscando amigos gracias
I have major HP problems. I die a lot against bosses and when i can’t farm from range. How am I supposed to deal with only 6k hp at lvl 141?
Hiya Ayumi, i was wondering how do you get Spirit of the Star? Thanks for the guide and help
ayumi, is it me or is the length of attack (how far you can throw your throwing stars) reduced dramatically for an assassin? Which skills should i pump to increase the distance in which i throw my stars? thanks
ayumi u able to help me give some guide on free to play player? on gear guide? i reached lvl 200 and i have the fafnir gear + claw. i dont know what to do or what should i aim for.. im un funded tho.
Hi I just got to level 60 and I don’t understand the guide in terms of what level exactly should I put the skills in. Did you leave that up to us?
Hi Ayumi, is there a hyper skill build for Hybrid bossing + leveling?
@Rudra: There is a guide on HP washing but it isn’t really worth though to be honest since it will definitely cost you lots of NX Cash which I do not recommend. There are other alternatives which can significantly improve your HP but will need to find time to create the guide.
Also looking for the guide @Joel is talking about. Ayumilove, is there a guide or discussion on increasing HP.?
Hi Ayumilove,
Would like to know where is the discussion on increasing HP?
According to this;
“NIGHT LORD PROS AND CONS
– Low HP (A guide on how to increase your max HP will be discussed)”
Please and Thank you in advance:-)
@Kin: This build focuses on training. From Level 100-140, you will be using Showdown to level up. Showdown grants additional EXP (Experience Points) and higher drop rate for items. If you would like to boss early, you can max Quad Star earlier. For me, I do boss raids when I’m level 140 and above.
Hi Ayumi, I haven’t played for 2-3 years and my NL got reset. I was wondering why you only put 1 SP into Quad Star, and instead, maxed Frailty Curse?
Hi, do you know where to hunt ilbi and hwabi in maplesea?
Hi, do you know if night lord is getting nerfed as well in kMSt or only night walker?
@Elgan: I would play Night Walker as its easier to start up with. Plus, you do not need to purchase Mastery Books.
Heyy! I’d like to ask, would you rather play Night Lord or Night Walker?
Because there is quite a difference in both character skillls but which one is technically the stronger one of both were to be funded or unfunded
Ayumilove can u privately send me a pm through email or whatsapp maybe? i need a list on what sp should i work on … since i left my lvl190 nightlord abonded for 4 years.. came back everything is reseted.. need a list for a perfect build .. hope can reply me ASAP thanks
@Kyuriin: Yes, all AP (Ability Points) into LUK for Night Lord.
@Ayumilove do we put all the AP into LUK ??
Excuse me , When I am farming am I supposed to change splitter for showdown?
So how do you increase max hp for NL??
Ayumi, who is better? NL or NW? 🙁
@Anymouse: Thanks for pointing it out! I have removed the outdated information regarding Ultimate Adventurer.
I thought you can’t make a ultimate adventurer anymore. Look at the Pros and Cons.
Thank You for the update! >^w^<
@Araaaaaa: Thanks for your query! I have adjusted Night Lord 4th Job Skill Build Guide to unlock Showdown earlier for faster leveling.
@CDA44: Sorry for the late reply. I have replaced Dark Serenity (old skill name) with Dark Harmony.
@MimiJester: Thanks for your feedback! I’ll put the Night Lord article into the priority update list 🙂
This seems to be a bit outdated, can you update a more recent version of it?
At 4th job there is a skill called “fake” which increases your avoidability, u may want to add that in when ur free =)
Ayumi can you change the dark serenity(1) to dark harmony(1) in the night lord’s skill build?
Why no max showdown earlier?
@ST: Both Total Damage aka TD and Weapon-Magic Attack aka ATT have the exact same effect if you have the same amount of %total damage and %attack, however you usually have more %total damage due to %boss and skills, so %attk is usually a bit better.
Which is bettet for nightlord %total dmg or %att? Switch from 21%att to 24% total dmg and notice 5m more dmg. Can some1 clarify? TY
Which is better for night lord %total dmg or %att? Had 21%att switch to 24% total dmg and notice doing 5m more dmg. Can some1 clarify? Thank you
@Cestlavie: Sorry, I do not keep track of the total amount of HP that a Night Lord has, perhaps someone knows about it.
@Yee: Alright, you’re welcome 🙂
Unavailable to delete comment? Sorry for spamming coz my comp never show my comment at all, using another comp only saw. Yea MSEA, many nl never receive the sp too so I had ibox. Hope they fix it asap. Thanks for your reply! F2
@Yee: You should get 10 SP (Skill Points), 4 SP upon completing 4th Job Advancement at Level 100, and 3 SP at Level 101, and another 3 SP at Level 102. Total SP should be 10 SP. I guess you are playing MSEA (MapleStory South East Asia), and I think they have not fix the bug with the 4th Job Advancement Free 4SP giveaway. I have tested this on GMS MapleStory version and they do not have this issue.
Hi there. I had done my job advance at lvl 102 and got 6 sp. Isit correct or it should be more for extra sp? And will I get lesser hp/mp than d my job adv at lvl 100? Thanks.
Hi Ayumi. I done my job adv at lvl 102 and got 6 sp. Is that correct or it should be more? And will I get lesser hp/mp than d job adv at lvl 100? Thanks!
Hi there. I had done my 4th job adv at lvl 102 and got 6 sp. Isit should be 9 or its correct? And will I get lesser hp/mp than d job adv at lvl 100? Thanks

Hey 🙂 do you know how much will be a 190nl HP WILL BE?
This is probably debatable but don’t you think maxing spread over enhance is better since it hits more you will be getting more exp and drops from killing more mobs and you can clear maps faster. Also Enhance only gives a 10% boost which is really not that great imo what do you think?
hey ayumi i think you should make your own video for the night lord skills.
I am following your suggestions and noticed that you did not put an editorial for 4th Job. What will be the main Mobbing skill? Would it be “Showdown”? (I Know Quad star is for Bossing)
Ayumi , if I level 101 then I go for job advancement but I was only given 3 SP points , is it possible to reset it ? Or is that SP that is unused ?
2nd job adv specialized skill missing
Do thieves start off with 25 DEX or can they be pure LUK?
The Hyper Skill Showdown [Enhance] is learned at 143 now in gMS, while [Reinforce] is at 183.
This is a great page, Iloveto play different of darts games at clubs with brass darts. Check my blog
My shade splitter hits 2 times, is there something wrong with maplestory? Or is it a really good glitch?
Hi Denny, it is the new update (V2 – Version 2) which is currently applicable for GMS since they have applied the RED patch. MSEA, EMS, BMS has not received the RED release yet.
Red is Night Lord New Update ?
HI WildHeartless, I’ll replace Purge Area – Enhance with SC (Showdown Challenge) since I do not boss much. Having extra EXP and Drop Rate boost will help in training and hunting 🙂
Hey Ayumi… loving new Night Lord… favorite class atm… anyways, which hyper skills should i go with… i was thinking of going with –
1. Quadruple Throw – Reinforce
2. Quadruple Throw – Boss Killer
3. Quadruple Throw – Bonus Attack
4. Purge Area – Enhance
5. Purge Area – Boss Killer
would that be a good choice… or is there something more effective???
I just want to ask, why in gms shade splitter only have 3hit while kms have 8hit?
If possible, can you give me some more information?
First things first, what’s the cast time for the new QT? I know that there’s a new animation for QT, so does the cast time change? Currently, at fastest(2), I believe that QT has a cast time of 600, so a big change in cast time can actually hurt our dps.
Second, currently Taunt (aka Showdown Challenge) does not affect monsters unless you kill the monster after casting taunt on them (meaning if you kill the monster with taunt, it doesn’t affect them). Does this change post-red? If it doesnt, then the new Showdown Challenge isn’t as great as it seems…
Third, what is Showdown Challenge’s and shadesplit’s cast time post red?
Fourth, does Mark of the Nightlord deal damage to the monster that’s marked?
And lastly, I want to be 100% sure, is Showdown Challenge – Enhance hyper only half effective on bosses?
Thanks for answering~
Can’t wait!
When will this update arrive in gms
