MapleStory Battle Mage Skill Build Guide

The Battle Mage (also known as BaM) is a member of the Resistance that condenses magical power and uses it for strength and protection. Unlike other Magician classes, the Battle Mage specializes in fast, close-range combat that overpowers foes. The Battle Mage uses staffs to decimate multiple enemies with flashy attack spells and casts auras to aid the party a character is in. The Battle Mage is unique amongst Magicians as it is primarily a melee combat character. Using his staff to beat back the Black Wings, the Battle Mage will be the first into danger, placing himself between his teammates and the forces of darkness. He also has Aura abilities, which allow him to buff himself and his friends in combat.

    Three pros i would mention:

    1. Very strong end game bossing support skills (huge damage boosts with traited dark and weakening auras, party condi cleanse with blue, party shield).

    2. Damage type magic/non-elemental – bossess with all resist do not cut your damage in half, unlike for most of classess

    3. No tons of buffs to manage and deaths from getting dispelled like regular mages.

  2. Ayumilove Post author

@Nicole: Thanks for the correction! I have updated the GMS enhancement core list based on your comment.

  3. beeveladee

Altar of Annihilation has been bumped up to 40 sec as per KMS’s ver 1.2047, live on GMS!

  4. Nicole

The correct GMS “enhancement cores” are as follows:

    Battle Mage Enhancement Cores

    Triple Blow (4% per level)
    Condemnation (2% per level)
    Quad Blow (4% per level)
    Dark Chain (2% per level)
    Quintuple Blow (3% per level)
    Battle Burst (2% per level)
    Dark Shock (2% per level)
    Finishing Blow (2% per level)
    Dark Genesis (2% per level)
    Sweeping Staff (2% per level)

@Hana: If you feel MP is too low, try using Maple Union to boost up your Max MP.

  6. Hana

    Hi there Ayumi! I was wondering if it was normal to have around 6k MP for a level 148 battle mage or if it’s a little low ;;

  7. Ayumilove Post author

@WYNE: Hi, I highly recommend to max mastery skill up to level 30 based on the 4th job skill build guide for fast leveling up.

  8. WYNE

Excuse me, Which skill in 4th job should make mastery skill (up to lvl 30)

  9. Ayumilove Post author

@BreakBlitz: Thanks for sharing your Battle Mage pros and cons! I have added them into the list above!

  10. BreakBlitz

Pros: Most balanced job in terms of survivability, damage, utility. Jack of all Trades
Cons: Lack of Final Damage and range does not scale well in late game

  11. Ayumilove Post author

@Sean: Yeah, you’re right. Actually that 1500 should be in miliseconds XD. I have updated “Altar of Annihilation” to 1.5 seconds.

  12. Ayumilove Post author

@Kory A Campbell: Did you accidentally by chance activated “Battle Rage (Toggle On/Off)” skill? This skill will set all of your skills to only target 1 monster to deal more damage. Great for bossing purposes.

  13. Kory A Campbell

I was wondering why my 4th job main attack says it attacks multiple enemies, but only attacks one monster. I recently came back to play again and I am super frustrated lol

  14. Sean

Hey, I think that the cooldown on the 5th job skill “Altar of Annihilation” is supposed to be 1.5 seconds, not 1500 seconds.

  15. Ayumilove Post author

@bruce: Thanks for the info! I have added Battle Mage pros into the list above.

  16. Ayumilove Post author

@Josh: Thanks for your input! I have updated the Altar of Annihilation (GMS) aka Black Magic Altar (MSEA) duration from 30 seconds down to 20 seconds.

  17. Josh

Hi about Altar of Anihiliation the duration on level 1: it’s 20 seconds and for a new altar 12 seconds. Proof here i took this from my bam

    http://i.imgur.com/0Z6qLSu.png

  18. bruce

Another pro is that they have stance 100%

  19. Sliver

Hi Ayumi, I have two comments to make for the pros and cons section. Firstly in pros you say BaM has high base mp. This is not true, at level 100 you have less than 4k mp, so this class is a mana burner. Jr Boogie is a must!. Secondly, in cons, the staff’s slow attack speed is not a problem, because in first job Hasty Aura passively give +2 attack speed levels and actively gives an additional +1 level, and in second job you get an attack speed boost as well.

  20. Ayumilove Post author

@Battleman09: In V-Matrix for Battle Mage, you can try to focus on getting these skills:
Trio #1: Finishing Blow / Dark Shock / Condemnation
Trio #2: Dark Genesis / Sweeping Staff / Battle Burst OR Dark Chain
    Main V Skill: Union Aura

  21. Ayumilove Post author

@Ssilver: Thanks for your feedback regarding BaM’s 1v1 low dps. I have updated the Battle Mage con’s with your suggestion 🙂

  22. Ssilver

I do not agree with one of the cons “BaM’s 1v1 dps is very low” due to the fact that this statement can vary upon the player’s mastery level regarding BaM’s mechanics such as aura swapping & using finishing blow and dark shock simultaneously. With that said, if BaM is played right, it can be considered one of the top 10 dps class in MapleStory. Instead of saying they have a low dps in 1v1 battle, I suggest it should be changed to “Some micromanagement is needed to unlock the full potential in terms of dps.” or “Could be at the top or bottom of the dps chart depending on your playstyle.”

  23. Battleman09

I main a BaM and I would like to know a little bit more on what to focus with the v matrix so far only skill I have is aura scythe.

  24. Ayumilove Post author

@Alex: Yes, you do not need to enhance any skills apart from job skills that you will be using for bossing and training, and chances are this skills are most likely 4th job skills.

  25. Alex

    hi Ayumi,
I just want to ask. 5th job have some skill core that combine some unless skill like 3rd job and 2nd job triple blow and quad blow. this 2 skills is not commonly use. so meaning i dont need to enchance those skill core right?

  26. WindHiss

    Thank you! <3

  27. Ayumilove Post author

@WindHiss: You could purchase the Mastery Books based on the priority set in the Battle Mage 4th Job Skill Build Guide. You could alter it to your liking if you find certain skill works best for you! The SP count for skill is capped at 10 unless its unlocked with Mastery Book 20 (to lift the cap from 10 to 20), and Mastery Book 30 (to lift the cap from 20 to 30). Some skills have max cap of 20 and some have max cap of 30. To know the max cap of a skill, simply hover the mouse cursor on the skill icon located in the Skill Window. If it mentions some skill details of the next level, it means that 4th job skill mastery can be further upgraded.

  28. WindHiss

Hey Ayumilove, which skills I should use my mastery books on? And how they work (I get the basics but the sp count confuses me)?

  29. Nuruin

@ArieJin the aura’s of the battle mage are designed to be most effective when you switch auras but for general mobbing yellow aura is the most effective for bossing you need to continually switch auras especially between weakening aura and dark aura.

  30. ArieJin

Would attack speed be better for BaM? Cause yellow aura acts like speed infusion and increase your attack speed by another level. So i’m sort of contemplating between yellow and dark aura.

  31. Redz

Anyone know about BaM 5th job change required “Last Resort” quest ?

  32. Ayumilove Post author

@Shirai: Thanks for the notice. I’ll be updating all jobs 5th Job Skills max level from 20 to 25. 🙂

  33. Shirai

Hi, from MapleSEA here, in our patch notes it seems that the master level for the 5th job skill is level 25.

  34. skysky

Can battle master stack with union aura?
Like can a battlemage hit 12 + 2 lines of dmg?

  35. crimsontech

It is sad that they applied cooldown on sweeping staff D:

  36. Ayumilove Post author

@BeanieJackz: You will get both aura since they are different skills.

  37. BeanieJackz

What if there is 2 battle mages in the party with one using Weakening Aura and the other using Dark Aura? Will the 2 auras stack?

  38. NoxFustis

Do Union Aura and Battle Master stack?

  39. Fail

I find that BaM has significantly less management than other mages

  40. Zqq

Arucadia, okay. but then can you guide me on how to cube my eqs? like what stats should i stay with and those hyper stats/ inner.

  41. Arucadia

Zqq, battle mage is relatively need more player control skills to increase the TOTAL damage deal in a specific time, if you combination of dark shock + blows will be more advantage. And due to other specific class skill like warriors or other classes will have their own different damage output formula. Play as your wish, do not compare too much. Have fun in Maple ~

  42. Zqq

would like to have advices in funding battle mage in MapleSEA. My range is around 1.1m only, crit rate is 73, min crit 81, max crit 84, ignore def 83, boss 160. Im hitting cra queen only at 7-8m per line using blow skills. Why other class can reach 10++m per line with range lower than mine. Need advices badly!

  43. Ayumilove Post author

@Meoshi: Thanks for the update regarding Battle Mage 4th Job Skill (Spell Boost). I have updated the skill info!

  44. Ayumilove Post author

@jwoo2000: Hi, Battle Burst is a 3rd job skill. It’s a typo which I missed removing from the 4th job skill build guide! I have removed the typo. Thanks for the notice!

  45. sarah

hey, sorry,i just got a mastery book and was wondering which skill should i use it on?

  46. fwl2001

hi , just curious. Between lumi and battle mage, which of the 2 have the better solo bossing potential?

  47. Meoshi

    Battle Mage 4th Job Skills

    Spell Boost (Passive)
Level 1: Magic ATT: +1%, Damage: +1%, Ignore Enemy DEF: +1%

There is a error it gives Magic ATT: +6% at lvl 1(On Reboot atleast)

  48. jwoo2000

Battle Mage 4th Job Skill Build (304SP): Everything maxed except Battle Burst.
    0. Grim Contract III (auto-maxed)
    1. Finishing Blow, Dark Genesis, Dark Aura, Staff Expert (1)
    2. Battle Rage, Party Shield, Spell Boost (1)
    3. Staff Expert (MAX)
    4. Spell Boost (MAX)
    5. Finishing Blow (MAX)
    6. Dark Aura (MAX)
    7. Dark Genesis (MAX)
    8. Maple Warrior (MAX)
    9. Battle Rage (MAX)
    10. Party Shield (MAX)
    11. Weakening Aura (MAX)
    12. Hero’s Will (MAX)
    13. Free SP (45)

    Where is Battle Burst?

  49. yarjor

Battle Mages have really high crit rate (both base rate, and bonus rate when attacking with final blow – with final blow I’m seeing almost only criticals as I get over 75% critical), and 100% power stance – both are great pros. I actually don’t see the lack of mount as a con, perhaps it’s a bummer for people who want to show off, but gameplay-wise it doesn’t really matter because BaMs are really fast – my BaM has 170% speed and 123% jump – better or at least on par with every mount, and I can still use skills 🙂

I love BaMs soooo much. I usually get bored with the game soon after the story quests (my fav part of the game) are over, even Zero which I thought was the best class for me I quit after reaching lvl 180 and finishing the quests. But once I tried Battle Mage I was so hooked on it that I stuck to it long after finishing the resistance quests, and I’m still enjoying it 😀

  50. Ayumilove Post author

@Metom: Thanks for your comment! I have added the teleportation pros into the list above.

  51. Metom

A real big pro is that they have the most versatile teleporting. You can jump and teleport in mid air and also teleport to places with no platform, allowing you to spam teleport damage or move much higher vertically.

  52. Jellyfish

@Jake, @Asura. I have a lv203 BaM main. I was also hating the nerf on the BKB but then I went bossing and found that the new toggle passive – Death Contract III – pretty much makes up for the 9s cooldown of BKB. high chance to trigger 12lines of your normal attack dmg and works on soloing bosses as well. Still worth playing IMO but limits the range of attacks so can be quite boring now that we are reduced to just 1 spammable mobbing attack.

  53. Asura

@Jake play it if you really love BaM, otherwise you should play other class. because after reboot patch, BaM is even worse

  54. Jake

is the new bam worth playing because the 170 hyper used to be my fav skill on that class now its nerfed???

  55. MrEclipse

Apparently Silent Crusade random mastery book gave me twister spin that already got taken out

  56. Asura

What i hate about new BaM is it requires you to have a good internet connection(low ping) to reach highest damage potential of BaM which is never happen to me because i have to use VPN software to play GMS f3 f4

  57. Ayumilove Post author

@Michael: I have updated the Battle Mage cons. If you have something in mind for pros and cons, comment below and I’ll add it up into the guide. Thanks for your help!

  58. Michael

@nick, no they cannot stack anymore as if the latest revamp

  59. nick

    Aura cant be stack?

  60. Michael

Hey Ayumi, a few things I noted.
The link skill description says 1/2 seconds invincibillity, while you state in the explanation that it is 3 and 6. I’ll verify later today on my BaM.
Also, in the cons list, twister spin is no longer a skill and Dark Shock has become a toggle for teleport, so it no longer has a cooldown, both as of v1.60
Other than that amazing work as always!! Even though I usually 1point all offensives > max buffs > max passives > max offensives as a standard build for all my chars (works pretty great, damage is a bit slower but still comes along awesome!) I always look back here to see what skills I don’t max or mainly use 😉

  61. Ayumilove Post author

@Orlando Gabriel: Thanks for noticing the discrepancy. I have updated Battle Mage 4th Job Skill (Battle Rage) Level 1 and Level 30 data based on GMS v.160 Black Heaven patch.

  62. Ayumilove Post author

@Pheil: I would use an aura that helps me based on the following situations: If I could 1HKO (1 Hit Knockout/kill) mobs, then I would switch to Hasty Aura for quicker travel when cycling around the map hunting for monsters. If you are bossing, swap with Dark Aura. If you are training in an area where you could not kill monsters in 1-3 hits, switch to Draining Aura or Blue Aura to recover/reduce the damage dealt by them to you.

  63. Ayumilove Post author

@mseaBAM: Probably the BKB aka Battle King Bar aka Sweeping Staff is felt over-spammable / overpowering by Nexon MapleStory, so a cooldown is applied to nerf it 😀

  64. Ayumilove Post author

@Monique: GMS is way ahead in updates when comparing with EMS (Europe MapleStory), therefore the Spell Boost is found under the 4th job skills. Hope that helps clarifies your doubt 🙂

  65. Orlando Gabriel

    Hey ayumi

I was making some calculations regarding kinesis and BaM and i noted that “Battle rage” has some extra passive stats which they don’t have.

    🙂

  66. Pheil

    Hey Ayumi 🙂

Which aura would you suggest me to keep on, considering that I am unfunded at lv 120?

  67. mseaBam

I just read orange mushroom latest update. Bam is getting a 13sec cool down on bkb. If you thought 9 was bad enough…

  68. SouL

Is the low 1v1 DPS of BaM still a concern after the revamp? Thinking of funding one because I kind of like the BaM’s mechanics after the black heaven patch

  69. Flintlock19

Battle Mage HP high than Kanna or not :3 ?

  70. Monique

I’m playing on maple europe and there’s no spell boost in the 4th job skills.

  71. B1ackReaper

I meant there’s no free sp after you max all your skills.

  72. Ayumilove Post author

@B1ackReaper: Strange. I get 3 SP when I reach Level 100 (4th job advancement). Which MapleStory are you playing? GMS / MSEA / EMS / KMS / TMS / JMS?

  73. B1ackReaper

Hey Ayumi-chan there’s no free SP for the fourth job.

  74. ralf

MSEA havent update the revamp battle mage yet??
    🙁

  75. Ayumilove Post author

@Darren Ong: Sorry to hear that. Battle Mage has revamped in Black Heaven patch where the Quint Blow only requires 10 Skill Points from Quad Blow. I believe MapleSEA has yet to implement that patch. That’s the reason why there is a V3 archived on my site at http://ayumilove.net/maplestory-battle-mage-skill-build-guide-v3/ (which is applicable for MapleSEA). Version 4 is for any MapleStory that has Black Heaven patch installed.

  76. Darren Ong

OMG!!!! I’ve always followed your skill build @.@
My friend played a battle mage recently (MapleSEA)
and now he’s stuck in 3rd job cuz he didnt max his quad blow which is required for quint blow
    T-T

  77. Ayumilove Post author

@EnsunYeep: This theory applies for older MapleStory version, however in the Black Heaven Chapter, they have reduced the level requirement. Therefore, its not required to max it for the first 3 advancement (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) * Blow Skills.

  78. EnsunYeep

i think have to MAX Quad Blow, because if you didnt MAX Qual Blow you cannot learn Quintuble Blow. And if you didnt MAX Quintuble Blow you cannot learn Finishing Blow.

  79. kinduil

I’m wondering about the Party Shield. Doesn’t it decrease the damage of fixed attacks on the party members in the shield? According to what you wrote for Party Shield Enhance it would appear that it reduces the damage done by 10%.

  80. Ayumilove Post author

@imagamecrazy: Yeah, thanks for your comment. I’ll readjust the skill build guide.

  81. imagamecrazy

Shouldn’t the Quad and Quintuple not be fully maxed, because the next blow skills required the previous one lvl 10+, why not just max dark chain and battle burst instead?

  82. BattleMage

Why do I make less damage than before with my BM ?
The cooldown 9 sec. is a nerf.
    I dont like such changes…

  83. PolarPanda

I really like the new look of the BaM. I am a huge resistance fan and main a mechanic currently but I will start grinding a BaM just because of the cute reaper.

I do agree however that the cool down on sweeping staff limits potential for damage to both bosses and training. The auras not stacking also leaves one wanting something more for buffs. Nexon is taking away buffs to the point where only one or two auras will ever be used. Hopefully the BaM will be as OP as the mechanic is now when it comes to GMS but changes need to be made to not anger players.

  84. B4BAMage

Is party shield affective against one hit ok moves such as Magnus and cvellum with moves that do 100% hp? Especially since it says %dmg reduction from %dmg atks

  85. tansdjh

If those normal resistance classes have special hairstyle like demon slayer or luminous, then it would be awesome

  86. JustABaM

The Pros and cons need to be changed.
I just wish they would change Sweeping Staff back to what it was

  87. newbiesBAM

    @Hey you,
bam att come with dark elemental, it is not neutral

    @stitch
yes BAM dmg might be nerf after this patch, but overall it is better then b4. if u have seen some new bam replay, u will know the change really is helping bam to getting more powerful then before.

  88. hey you

are BaM skills neutral? if so, whats the use of elemental reset?

  89. hey you

Is BaM skills neutral, isnt it? if so, whats the use of elemental reset?

  90. stitch

    @Xenomata

Clearly you haven’t been playing a high level BaM
everyone second is significant and impact greatly on DPS in bossing
as TheRealist has mentioned, the addition of 9s CD on sweeping staff mean BaM mobbing is severely handicapped, NO AMOUNT OF %DAMAGE INCREASE COULD COMPENSATE THAT
finishing blow hitting 7hits or 8hits, for how long? 40s, with a CD of 120s…i don’t see the point here

maybe you should go play a BaM before commenting

  91. TheRealist

    @Xenomata

“Again… I don’t get it, people are being so fast to shout nerf it is unbelievable. The only thing that is missing is the large amount of Attack Speed, but that is such a small detail…”

One step of attack speed alone translates to roughly 8% damage, BaMs lose 4 steps, 5 if you aren’t using Yellow aura. You not knowing how much this concept correlates to such a huge chunk of damage lost as a BaM renders much the rest of your opinion on the changes moot.

Thinking this change is solely about damage, too, highlights your inability to fully analyze the update as a “nerf.” Sweeping Staff’s hitbox and spammability makes BaM an easy top 5 mobbing class in the game. The cooldown change to 9 seconds and new reliance on much smaller ranged Finish Blow drops them down to one of the weakest mobbers. Similarly, while the range of auras was buffed, their active effects are heavily-nerfed as well (compared to advanced auras), not to mention unstackable, weakening the support utility of BaMs.

With already a poor offense (lack of 100% elemental reset for bossing, no access to the nifty 1.2x staff weapon multiplier, collectively a rough ~70% dmg loss) to really validate BaM as good damage classes to begin with, Nexon went ahead and shafted other of its great tools. The fact that you so shallowly analyzed these changes and narrow-mindedly critiqued others for it is “unbelievable.”

  92. Xenomata

I still don’t get why people are shouting nerf.

~BattleKing Bar was given a power increase, and a cooldown of 9 seconds isn’t much. It’s not like this is lowering DPS or anything.
~Finishing blow is much more powerful now, and has the ability to hit 7 times, you know the same amount of times BKB could hit.
~Yeah you can’t use every aura at the same time now, but your given each auras effects passively, so it isn’t like it’s the end of the world. Just pick an aura and go with it.

Again… I don’t get it, people are being so fast to shout nerf it is unbelievable. The only thing that is missing is the large amount of Attack Speed, but that is such a small detail…

  93. Lone fillet

Sweeping staff got COOLDOWN ?!! Quiting BaM now !

  94. ValorWolfie

I don’t like this revamp and changes on this BaM. It gotten nerfed and remove both BB and Light Grand Aura then add cooldown on Sweeping Staff just to balanced it. =/

  95. Flighty

So you basicly can only use 1 Aura anymore? :O Noooooooooooes whyyyyyyy

  96. Yup

When will be relase in EMS aprox?? 🙁

  97. Oz

So basically they made all cooler but did it wrong on hyper skills T.T
ill miss my actual hypers but yes this looks like it will make my BaM strong again, i remember when i was lead dps XD
