MapleStory Luminous Skill Build Guide

MapleStory Legends Luminous Job Selection

Luminous is one of MapleStory Hero Magician (Legend) who uses Shining Rod (primary weapon) and Orb (secondary weapon). This job uses a light/dark skill system whereby frequently using light magic skills fills your orb with darkness whereas frequently using dark magic skills fills with light. Once you fully charge up either light/dark, you will go into a state of Equilibrium for 7 seconds that allows you to activate powerful skills. After that, your orb turns either dark/light (opposite color of the one before). Using skills similar to the orb deals extra damage. Example, your orb glow is currently dark, and using dark skills deals extra damage compared to light skills and vice versa. [KMS NOTE] Luminous 1st Job Primary Skill differs based on the storyline you choose. Choosing light unlocks Flash Shower (Light Magic) whereas selecting dark unlocks Abyssal Drop (Dark Magic). Luminous gets an initial of 5 SP (1st Job) and 4 SP (2nd, 3rd, 4th Job) after completing job advancement. KMS (Korea MapleStory) released Luminous on Jul 11 2012. GMS (Global MapleStory) released Luminous on Dec 4 2012.

Luminous Storyline

During his battle with the Black Mage, Luminous along with the other Heroes, managed to seal him away. But not before the Black Mage could impart some of his darkness on to Luminous. Luminous must now learn to control the awesomely terrifying power of the Black Mage before it threatens to consume his soul and plunge him into the world of darkness.

Good thing Luminous will have some help on his journey! His trusted (and see-thru) helper, Vieren, and the first person he met after fighting the Black Mage, Laina. With the help of Vieren and Laina, will Luminous learn to wield the powers of both Light and Dark to defend Maple World before it is too late?

Luminous Notes

Light vs. Dark Attributes

  • The Global MapleStory version of Luminous is a bit different from the version of Luminous in the Korean version of MapleStory. In this version, the quests and skills have been modified to adjust gameplay flow. You won’t choose between light/dark in the beginning tutorial, and there will only be one story.
  • The story will be based on the Dark side, wherein Luminous is conflicted about the darkness within him. You will have access to light and dark skills, with the ability to switch between the two and activate buffs that will enhance one or the other attribute.
  • You will gain the light vs. dark gauge when you complete your 2nd job advancement, at which point you will also be able to switch between light and dark modes.

When switching between light and dark modes, you’ll briefly enter Equilibrium state.

  • Power Stance has a chance to be activated for a brief period, preventing you from getting knocked back.
  • Attacking monsters with light skills will recover 1% of your HP.
  • Dark skills will use 0 MP.
  • Both effects for light and dark will be applied for attack skills that have an equilibrium attribute.

Then, max Flash Shower as it will be your primary attacking skill in 1st Job. For extra damage, max Dark Affinity after maxing those 2 essential skills mentioned above. Max Mana Well to temporarily increase your MaxMP so you can consume High Recovery MP Potions such as Pure Water or Elixirs without wasting a drop of it. After that, max Magic guard as you won’t be using this often during 1st job, unless the monster you train on drops lots of MP Potions. Explanation:
When you reach 2nd Job, Luminous will get an Orb Indicator located on the right side of the screen. It tells you how many more times you need to use a particular skill (either light or dark) to reach Equilibrium. Therefore, add 1 SP in both Sylvan Lance (Light Magic) and Pressure Void (Dark Magic) to take advantage of both magic benefits. Using Light Magic heals you 1% of MaxHP whereas Dark Magic costs 0 MP.

Before maxing these 2 skills, max High Wisdom to improve your character intellect (INT). The more INT you have, the more MaxMP you gain per level. Next, max Spell Mastery to stabilize your damage and then Spell Booster to speed up your attack.

Once those 3 are maxed, proceed with adding 1 SP into Sylvan Lance, Pressure Void and Black Blessing parallely as you level up. You want to have a stable balance damage when you switch from dark to light and light to dark magic. Blinding Pillar isn’t a skill use often for training, so prioritize it last.

Hi HolyLight, you should make Luminous! It’s much more fun compared to Evan. Take note that Evan has tons of stories to go through just to get that Dragon to grow to a full form and getting extra SP from quests. I’m not sure whether Evan still depends on Skill Books or Mastery Books which is only available from Cash Shop purchase.

  3. HolyLight on said:

Im pretty troubled bout making a hero mage so which one should i make an evan or a luminous?

  4. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Dylan, try to fight against enemies which is level 70-80 range (close to the quest level, not your character level!) Beetle and Dual Beetle are Level 99 and 105.

  5. Dylan on said:

Thanks for the reply but that still doesnt fix my problem. I’m i level 101 luminous and im trying to fight the beatles in Leafre but i don’t see a single one drop traces.

  6. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Dylan, make sure the Quest Chasing Traces is being activated (already accept the NPC Quest from Agent N by double-clicking the light-bulb above your character). Otherwise, the mobs will not drop them. This concept same applies to all MapleStory quests that requires you to loot/pick-up quest-items from monsters, in particular (Traces) for this quest. You can collect 100 traces from ANY monster (simplifies things alot :D) But take note that these monsters MUST be within your quest level range which is 11 levels below and above. Since this quest is Level 70, fight monsters within those levels. For starters, loot from aliens in kulan feild V (They are Level 80 monsters)

  7. Dylan on said:

Hey Ayumi in GMS is chasing traces glitched? I tried to kill mobs around my level like level 118 mobs but i didnt get any traces. Did i do something wrong or is it glitched?

  8. ???? on said:

I wish Luminous is coming to MSsea

  9. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Jason, as ShYGuY154 replied, the only quests required is just the job advancements.

  10. ShYGuY154 on said:

The luminous quests above aren’t required, other than the job advancements, so it’s fine if you completely neglect it. However, it’s at a cost of seeing the Black Mage in person in one of the quests, or so I’ve heard. ^^ Anyhow, at the very least, you’ll have a little more insight about Luminous’s storyline, if you follow the quests.

  11. Jason on said:

Hi Ayumi :) I wanted to know if the quest Above/Below are required cuz i didnt do em.

  12. Darrel on said:

    @DeSnowy
    thx for the relply
    I’ll try free market

  13. DeSnowy on said:

@darrel free market, almost everything is there xD

  14. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Darrel, sorry I don’t know where to purchase those scrolls. Perhaps someone here (Luminous players) can help you with this :)

  15. Darrel on said:

hey ayumilove, do u know where i can buy potential scrolls for the luminous orbs?
    thx

  16. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Mike Huang, is there something above which is not updated?

  17. Mike Huang on said:

Will everything on this website be updated soon?

  18. Ayumilove on said:

Hi DeSnowy! Higher level equips will have better potential stats and lines. This concept applies to orb as well :) Take note that orbs does not come with any potential lines in the first place. You will need to use scrolls to unlock those potential lines :D

  19. DeSnowy on said:

About the orb thing, what’s the difference between the different leveled orbs? Is it the potential lines?

  20. Ayumilove on said:

    Thanks Eric for the update!

  21. Eric on said:

Hi Ayumi, MapleSEA release on 12 June 2013 a new job is Luminous and Kaiser too, thanks

  22. DeSnowy on said:

Well, maplesea is not running under nexon, instead it’s being run under asiasoft, and they also run other games quite a few other games, so I guess this is the reason. Also I’m working on merc as I think it would suit me best, as for my phantom, i’ll be selling its raven horn set. :/

  23. Ayumilove on said:

Hi DeSnowy, once you played lots of character, try to find the one that you like most to play. That job that doesn’t make you bored or doesn’t feel like grinding. For me, its either Kaiser or Demon Slayer. That’s probably one of the reasons why there are many Demon Slayers around MapleStory. Kaiser is a good choice too, if you have watch my video in the Kaiser Skill Build section, they have so many skills to play with (regular and transform), similarly to Xenon which will be release soon in MapleSEA! Its kinda strange that MapleSEA abruptly gets an epic update which beats GMS, usually its really slow or no updates is being followed. I wonder why?

  24. DeSnowy on said:

@ayumi my level isn’t high enough for empress lol, I don’t have a main xD

  25. Ayumilove on said:

Hi LumiLover, sorry for the late reply. It seems my dashboard wasn’t able to detect your message until I manually browsed the long list of comments here. I have updated Luminous 4th Job Skill Build Guide with Ender.

  26. Ayumilove on said:

Hi DeSnowy, Thanks for the update! With that discovery, it will make a profitable business to sell them off in freemarket :) Have you tried going on a few rounds and see whether Empress Cygnus drop more items afterwards? Or perhaps your friends are using Drop Rate Coupons or Guild Effect with additional drops?

  27. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Evanicaboy, I couldn’t give much reviews with Evan since I have a newbie Evan character. But what I could say is Luminous is great for bossing since every now and then, you can spam those 2 giant light+dark swords with no delay during Equilibrium stage and the damage popping up with criticals is simply amazing! You could test it out on Bearwolf or Croky at Lion Heart Castle to get a feel of it :)

  28. Evanicaboy on said:

Ayumi is evan better for bossing or is luminous better for bossing?

  29. DeSnowy on said:

Hi ayumi, regarding the drop rate increase. A few friends and I decided to try it out in empress and monster park. According to my friends who constantly goes for empress, they got more equips with above average stats and hidden pot. As for me who went for monster park, there was not much of a difference.

  30. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Glennn Chia, all of the skill build here are Tempest-Update compatible. So there won’t be any issues following this guide, except for Zen Skill Build (need some help from Zen players who has skills maxed for this) :)

  31. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Xerotic, any path will do, but recommended is Light Side since the damage is higher than Dark. This applies for 2nd, 3rd and 4th Job. But it also depends on your usage. For instance, 2nd Job Pressure Void (Dark) is so much easier to mob enemies in Haunted Mansion Scarecrow compared to Sylvan Lance (Light) even though the damage is slightly lower.

  32. Xerotic on said:

Hi Do You Recomand we take the dark or the light side?

  33. Glennnn Chia on said:

Yay MapleSEA Luminous is gonna be the same as KMS’s so do we still follow this skill build guide?

  34. Ayumilove on said:

Hi DarkStar, Luminous link skill is Permeate.

  35. Darkstar on said:

please state which one is luminous link skill, TQ

  36. Ayumilove on said:

Thanks DeSnowy, I have checked them out :) MapleSEA players will not have much issues with the skill build guides here since most of it are Tempest compatible, unless I missed one out :D

  37. DeSnowy on said:

Hi ayumi, the finalized season 2 update notes are out. Here’s the link: http://maple.asiasoftsea.com/updates/view/season_2_patch_note/#.UXeIQ0Vhic0

  38. Ayumilove on said:

    Thanks DeSnowy :)

  39. DeSnowy on said:

@ayumilove that’s part one of the patch

  40. Ayumilove on said:

Hi DeSnowy, it seems MapleSEA has released some new changes (nerfing and buffing the adventurer skills). Is it a separate patch from MapleStory Season 2?

  41. DeSnowy on said:

@ayumilove I have no idea, patch notes were just released earlier today. I will be sure to tell you once I’ve tried it out.

  42. Ayumilove on said:

Wow, thanks DeSnowy for the latest news happening in MapleSEA! SEA is getting an extreme overhaul on everything in one big patch which includes Hyper skills, Monster park revamp, Item reorganization and Increased drop rates. hmm wait a minute, drop rates increased? I wonder how much *increase* from the previous. Does anyone know?

  43. DeSnowy on said:

For maplesea players: Good News :D asiasoft decided to combine patches, so hyper skills would be out soon in a few days/weeks. :D for a sneak preview here’s a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS1nwVFv5rA&feature=youtu.be

October is still a long way

  46. LumiLover on said:

In the 4th job section, when do you max Ender?

  47. DeSnowy on said:

@luminous probably in October, we don’t even have the legends return yet. Maplesea is the slowest among all the maplestories.

  48. Luminous on said:

when will luminous be updated in maplesea?

  49. Zach on said:

ACtually I really liked the KMS where if you are struggling constantly between both forms, was kinda cool. XD

  50. Ayumilove on said:

No worries Zach :) Thanks for sharing your input! Sometimes my Luminous needs to relogin to get the benefits from either the Light/Dark Equilibrium.

  51. Zach on said:

actually i realized i read the skills wrong but i meant I wasnt getting 0 in Equilibrium. but its working after a relog so sorry for dbl post cant delete and all XD

  52. Zach on said:

Honestly I liked the KMS version of switching affinites it seems to make more sense, =// not a big fan of the spamming one type for feathers kinda thing at all =-=. but oh well and idk why but in dark mode im not getting a 0 MP cost idk if its a glitch but the tooltip syas it does that so idk

  53. Ayumilove on said:

Thanks Em for your notice! I’ll be correcting Luminous 1st Job Skill Build :)

  54. Em on said:

Hello Ayumilove!! There are some mistakes in the 1st Job with the skills. There is only a Dark Affinity skill not the Light one. And you forgot to put in the skill build to max Abyssal Drop. Cya! :)

  55. Ayumilove on said:

Hi RaikaZero, I’m just making it easier for them to understand lol. The crystal feather is in purple not gray. Actually Light Skills isn’t that powerful considering that Reflection damage decreases upon hitting the next target compared to Apocalypse that deals constant damage to multiple enemies within the vicinity.

  56. RaikaZero on said:

Ayumi to be exact, in Light Mode Luminous can use dark skills, but it’s not as powerful as the light skills. But currently Light skills are more powerful then Dark skills. Making it quite annoying to enter Equilibrium, also its not Grey its Purple.

  57. Ayumilove on said:

Hi Alfred Fong, Luminous is able to switch between 2 modes, either Light or Dark. When he is in Light Mode, he can only use Light Magic. When he is in Dark Mode, he can only use Dark Magic. When he switches from Light to Dark or Dark to Light, he will go into Equilibrium State or you can call it as White + Black = Gray Mode. In Gray Mode, he can spam any of his attacks without any cooldown restriction nor cost any MP only for a shortwhile. Usually players will spam their ultimate attacks such as Death Scythe (during 3rd Job) and Ender (during 4th Job). In order to switch modes, he must charge up those feather crystals by spamming his regular Light/Dark Magic. For example, if he is currently in Light Mode, all he has to do is to spam Light Magic and once he charges up fully a Light Feather Crystal, he uses it to go into Gray/Equilibrium Mode to spam ultimates. Then he will automatically change from Light to Dark. Then repeat the same process as above for Dark.

  58. Alfred Fong on said:

Hi I wonder what’s the differences between dark luminous and light luminous ?? Ayumilove can u pls explain more clearly? I dun seem to understand. :)

  59. DeSnowy on said:

@alker not really, magic guard would be useful in the eclipse and equilibrium state as dark skills would require no mana.

  60. alker on said:

This is terrible. Don’t max out magic guard till lvl 120+, you don’t need to waste that much mana when your have health regain from spells. Moonlight spear is a terrible ability, doing about half the dmg of Spectral light (the number listed here for spectral light is way lower than what it actually is).

  61. Nightclawz on said:

Uh whats the differance between orbs cause i dont see any change when i get a new one

  62. DeSnowy on said:

I’m playing Msea, and considering how slow Msea is (just had the db revamp and release of hilla expedition 4 days ago), tempest patch will probably be out late this year or early next year. I won’t be playing by then. :(

  63. Harry on said:

Are you Korean, American, Chinese, or Japanese? Di you speak four languages? If you do, then that’s awesome! And I like your little character next to your comment/reply.

  64. Harry on said:

Ayumi, I can read and understand Korean completely, because I lived in South Korea for 9 years. I’m 12 right now. Also, I have the Korean Maplestory comic book, and it says that it’s Death Side. Also played as Luminous, and the skill book said that its Death Side. Oh, by the way, Luminous is one of the Tempest Magician hero, not Legends. I think you meant Tempest.

  65. Ayumilove on said:

Oh, direct translation? That’s strange considering the animation that has a scythe, naming it Death Scythe would be more appropriate for the skill :D

  66. Ayumilove on said:

I’m guessing in 6 months time. MapleSEA is kinda slow compared to GMS. As we can see, GMS obtains KMS new updates such as Tempest in less than 3 months after its release. If MapleSEA were to obtain the English version of it based from GMS (after it has done its corrections on their side – such as Skill Translation, Voice over for Luminous characters, Storyline Translation), then they will get from GMS and update their server. Probably when GMS gets Xenon, MapleSEA will get Kaiser and Angelic Buster.

  67. Harry on said:

Death Scythe actually used to be Death Side in Korean.

  68. Fidikado on said:

Hey Ayumi, I’m wondering when will Luminous come to MapleSEA?

  78. AvolareIgnis on said:

In the global version, there’s no difference in/choosing between light and dark version, so for the first job there’s no light affinity skill. How would you alter the sp build guide then? (Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I’m just getting back into maplestory.)

  79. Hero on said:

Luminous uses two-handed weapon right? So it is can strictly be scrolled with two-handed magic attack? Many people say so.Please correct me if wrong :O

You buy higher level orbs at the Weapon merchant in Ellinia. They have absolutely no difference in stats, unless you are going to put some potential on them, then you must get the higher level orbs. Other than that… No noticeable difference whatsoever.

    Hi Hua,

Thanks for the note! I’ll be doing the SP correction for the skill build guides :)

I missed reading your message in the MapleStory Phantom Skill Build Guide section.

  84. Hua on said:

    Hi Ayumi,

Jett, Resistance classes, Hero classes, and Mihile that use separated SP system will now receive 5 SP for 1st, 4 SP for 2nd, 4 SP for 3rd, and 4 SP at 4th job advancements.

That means in 2nd Job Inviolability / Blinding Pillar (gMS name) will be Lv.9 instead of Lv.5

And for 3rd Job Shine Redemption / Ray of Redemption (gMS name) the skill level will be 4 instead of 1.

Also the last time I told you about that there is a separate SP system for Phantoms too, you haven’t corrected your guide. Nonetheless this is a great site with useful information.

Hey ayumi, you may want to check this :

    Everything maxed except Shine Redemption (1/10) (121 SP 3rd Job : LV60-100)
I just reached lvl 100 and theres a 19 Sp lag, so there should be 2 skills that cant be maxed.

  94. Kevin on said:

    thanks

  95. Ayumilove on said:

@Kevin: I do not know when Luminous will be release to GMS. Based from my observations, KMS Content should reach USA shores within 6 months to 1 year at most.

  99. Deity on said:

Excuse me, ayumilove, but don’t you think Shine Redemption is a valuable skill? I mean, it heals you AND attacks monsters at the same time.

  101. Deity on said:

Thank you for that info. I really appreciate it.

  102. Ayumilove on said:

    @Deity:

Usually it would take an average of 6 months for GMS (Global MapleStory) to receive KMS (Korean MapleStory) Updates/Patch for New Jobs, Revamp, Features, etc.

Also, GMS has their own issue such as dealing with hackers, fixing bugs. All of these have to be taken place before issuing a new content update.

  103. Deity on said:

    Hello ayumilove,

  105. Rennzi on said:

Doesn’t luminous have a diffrent skill set, for the first job if you decide to take the dark path? I’ve seen some video’s of people choosing the dark side first, with a dark skill where it drops like dark rocks?

  106. Ayumilove on said:

hi oASTRAYo, shinning rod should be one handed like a staff/wand but this does not mean he can equip a shield because his other hand is to hold the orb (located on the shield slot) acting as the secondary weapon. The orb does not have slot for scrolling.

  107. oASTRAYo on said:

Just want to know the shining rod is one hand or two hand. Also for the Orb is it accessories or shield? or something els. Please let me know so I can prepare some scroll for them.

Yes, Luminous job is out in KMS (Korea MapleStory). However, in order to play KMS, you will need to download and install the game, you will need KSSN (KOrean Social Security Number – if you from Korea, you will have this) and the ability to read/listen/type Korean. lol.
