Tayrel Review

Tayrel is an Epic Defense Magic affinity champion from the High Elves faction in Raid Shadow Legends. He has been a stalwart presence in the game for as long as I can remember – from my earliest account takeover to the present day, he remains a force to be reckoned with! Many a seasoned player considers Tayrel to be the very best Epic that Raid: Shadow Legends has to offer, with his arsenal of high-powered debuffs suited for all occasions.

In my journeys through the game, Tayrel is one of the champions that I always keep my eyes peeled for, for he is truly a master of his craft. His A2 move is his pièce de résistance, cutting through the defenses of all foes and leaving them vulnerable to the swift strikes of your damage dealers. And let us not forget his A1 ability, which when fully booked, is a reliable way to ensure that the Clan Boss is always stricken with the essential debuff of decreased Attack. Tayrel’s A3 ability, on the other hand, is most useful when navigating the treacherous environs of Spider or Faction Wars, where he can greatly reduce the turn meter of a single target enemy. Tayrel’s value is unparalleled – he’s a versatile veteran champion that is both sturdy and lethal. In short, he is a true champion in every sense of the word!

Tayrel Champion Lore

Before Tayrel donned his mask and took up that name, he was a musician and a craftsman who was trained at arms and smithing, and forged his own spear and shield. As he moved them through the air, subtleties of his design and the flow of air across them made them resonate with hypnotic tones, sharp and droning and highly variable. For this his arms and armor were called his Singing Steel, and this was the kernel of his fame — enough to convince him to create a new persona.

To take a new identity behind a mask is a time-honored ploy to ascend in status in Aravia. The starkness of the masked visage is a statement of do-or-die commitment to absolute glory. A masquerading Elf is leaving everything behind to let their deeds speak as loudly as possible in the creation of a new mythos. Tayrel began his masquerade with a purge of Undead he had discovered gathering in the Mountains of Despair north of the Aravian heartland. Walking skeletons and frozen, mummified dead were being called forth by a vile necromancer called Periclor, himself riddled with frostbite, half-dead yet kept half-alive by his arts.

Bracing themselves against the frigid temperatures, Tayrel and a chosen band of allies raided the Undead warband in their valley. This served to provoke Periclor’s wrath. The necromancer marched his full might against the nearest Elven farms and ranches, located in the habitable foothills. This created just the dramatic crisis Tayrel intended to exploit, and when the local nobility demanded answers, he conveniently made himself and his forces available and shared what he knew, omitting his role in provoking Periclor. The nobles were in equal parts impressed and intimidated, charmed and disturbed, by Tayrel’s unsettling yet charismatic voice and the hypnotic sounds his Singing Steel made as he moved. They tasked him with subduing the menace and gave him command of more troops for the task.

Leading his larger contingent, Tayrel met Periclor’s Undead army in an exposed, rocky valley swept clean of snow by constant downrushing winds, which nearly drowned out the echoing blows of battle. Tayrel’s troops held their own, but Tayrel himself sought and found glory with his Singing Steel. The Undead found that even their unnatural necromantic minds were disrupted by the eerie drones and whines of Tayrel’s spear as he slashed and stabbed their warriors to pieces. From near-mindless skeletons to Undead commanders of considerable intelligence, they all found it difficult to coordinate their assaults on him and follow through with their maneuvers.

Tayrel battled his way to Periclor himself. The strange drone of the Steel disrupted the necromancer’s concentration, and without that, all his death magic was for naught — the shivering necrotic wretch could not summon his death-magics, nor defend himself, against the whistle and whine of Tayrel’s spear. With Periclor defeated, Tayrel’s forces swiftly overwhelmed the remaining Undead, who reverted to mindlessness without a necromancer to guide them. The Elves suffered few casualties, leaving many mouths to speak of Tayrel’s exceptional and distinctive victory. Just as he had planned, he exploded in status, becoming a new and exciting mystery for the Aravian court… but one few wished to meet in person.

After more than 2 years of playing, I pulled Tayrel. So glad I got him. Like @Cirme, I put Perception gear on him along with Divine Crit Rate (2 sets of Perception). I had a mediocre team in High Elves FC, Tayrel fit right in. With him in the squad, the allies got nine more stars in three battles, finishing all 63 stars. Full auto. Also he helped the squad in DT Hard defeat level 30 Magma Dragon. I’ll be seeing how he does in other areas as well. What a great champion. And thank you Ayumilove for creating and maintaining this Web site, it’s so helpful!!!

  2. Cirme

i tied up perception gear on him, is that good or what?

    Clarification please:
In his support masteries Exalt in Death is written but Charged Focus is selected…

  5. @MrShovel

@MrShovel I hope you have notifications on so I can see if you can defend that statement you just made after this.

Tayrel is outclassed by Armina, Dhukk, and Stag Knight and is an A tier epic at best? Alright.

First, Armina. She is barely an analogue for comparison beyond her aoe decrease defense. Her A2 decrease defense does have the benefit of going down to a 3 turn cooldown after it’s 6th book into A2 (which could potentially and very likely will be the 15th book), but the secondary component of reducing 7.5% cooldown is far weaker than Tayrels secondary component of placing sleep on people under decrease atk. Her A1 ability having a fair chance of placing stun is strong situationally, but has 0 value vs bosses. Her A3 is a skill I have found virtually worthless. It’s just a turn meter decrease a majority of the time and again the stun effect is wasted against bosses. Lastly she is an attack champion and is bonkers squishy. I’d take Tayrel over Armina 100% of the time. For being a champ released over a year after Tayrel this one hardly measures up to power creep standards. Funny enough despite her entire kit revolving around stun Tayrel has one of (only one I can think of off hand) the only 2 turn stuns in the entire game.

Dhukk is definitely a Tayrel analogue in at least more than 1 way as he’s also a defense champ. Dhukk is a great epic for sure, his A2 is superior in most situations to Tayrels. He is a debuff machine and offers more debuff options than Tayrel, but his A3 is pretty much entirely worthless vs bosses and in general he is more support than Tayrel. Tayrel also offers decent turn meter control and his damage absolutely dwarfs Dhukk. I think there are teams where Dhukk will outshine Tayrel, but it isn’t even close to a universal absolute.

Stag Knight is amazing, but even Stag Knight isn’t universally superior. For one Stag Knights attacks are attack based meaning you can’t just focus on defense and turn him into an absolute fortress. His Multipliers are great to make up for this and for those that throw caution to the wind and build his attack high Stag Knight can hit incredibly hard. Most people don’t do this however as his value is in the billion debuffs he can apply as he covers nearly the entire spectrum of debuffs on his own. Again however he does not possess turn meter control, and his decrease attack runs the risk of falling off. In most situations since people build their Stag Knights tanky he will do less damage than Tayrel as well. He’s also the only spirit affinity of every champ discussed which has its obvious pros and cons.

Tayrel is absolutely still an S rank epic. He simply isn’t a top 5 epic like he used to be when he was new kid on the block.

If you still want to claim he’s completely outclassed and only deserving of an A rank please enlighten us about how and why. In detail.

  6. Nalethor

Got a fully booked, fully equiped, fully ascended level 60 tayrel that is equiped with OK gear (nothing out of this world, like some streamers and youtubers have), and he’s an absolute MONSTER. He outdamages everyone on my team. Preemptive strike often crits for 60~70k, his A1 deals 30~35k (15~18k a hit), he’s really strong, insane multiplyers.

Plus, this dude is HARD to kill, damn, he’s often the last man standing on my team, and he wipes the enemy all by himself, dude’s a hard hitting tank.

  7. Aaron Ng

Since this champion is based mainly on defense and high accuracy is essential… Possible to put him in defense and support masteries? Ignoring offense masteries?

  8. Angry Howie

Can no longer use the Preemptive Strike skill on the Clan Boss, almost worthless now.

  9. Matt

Pulled this fellow after investing heavily in a Warmaiden for Arena. Okay.

  10. MrShovel

Tayrel has been outclassed by so many champs. Uugo, Dhukk, even Armina. They all have better decrease defense skills on a better cooldown. Tayrel is A tier, but not S. That is for sure.

  11. Quack

I have seen someone use Tayrel and hit crazy hard.. I can’t find the video, because it wasn’t a Tayrel guide, it was a random video from one of the big youtubers. Does anyone know whether to go all defense or Crit DMG? pls and thanks!

  12. Collapsicum

@vino if you are using Tayrel on FK 20 then he is weak affinity so when he procs a weak hit the turn meter wouldn’t get reduced. Coldheart on the other hand is void so she doesn’t get weak hits. Added to that i believe there is also a 3% chance the enemy will resist an effect regardless of acc/res.

  13. Boxatron

@Vino Even when it doesn’t explicitly state a % chance, the turn meter attack is still compared against the opponent’s resistance. (I just found this out yesterday with Armiger after spec’ing him for 100% crit chance.)

I don’t have a good answer for why it’s not working when both him and Coldheart have the same ACC, but ACC does play a role.

  14. Vino

BTW a note for the comment below, when I was 100% sure when using the lower turn meter skill FK is NOT blocking (I know the skill will fail if FK is blocking just in case someone wanna mention that)

  15. Vino

Why his A3 failed to lower turn meter sometimes when it doesn’t say that there is a % chance? I use him along with Coldheart and observing this for about 50 matches against FK while Coldheart never failed to lower turn meter as I notice This champ only lower turn meter from time to time. Both of them have about the same ACC value. Does ACC really play a part in this or there are situation where turn meter of an opponent cannot be lower any more?

  16. Jfnwkaif

    Is tyrel > Zargala?

  17. rudraigh

Ayumilove, can you please explain the mastery choices between Support and Defense. Specifically, the reasons for each step. Ive got all the scrolls and I think I understand the Offense tree well enough but I’m having a hard time figuring out how the various Support and Defense masteries aid his abilities. Thanks.

  18. TheTodmeister

Only ONE note about using him for Clan Boss: On auto he fires off his attacks completely wrong and uses his A3 first, which is absolutely useless for CB. Presuming you’ve speed tuned him to DEF down for damage dealing after, you will want to start off your first turn manually to fire off A2 first. Once you’ve done that, good to go!

There also really needs to be a separate mastery chain for Arena from Campaign, as the two don’t overlap so well, since he would often comprise a DEF down speed nuke setup. Rejuvenation and Shadow heal do nothing for him in an Arena nuke scenario, so leave them out. In their place, you would want Shieldbreaker and Ruthless Ambush on the Offense tree.

  19. TheTodmeister

Yes, he is essentially worthless without ACC. But pls note that this site is ONLY taking into consideration how to gear and master a Champion at END GAME, when you should, allegedly, have a collection of gear to cherry pick from, and it’s assuming you’re getting your accuracy from a 6* ACC banner you allegedly earn from Spider (fat chance for F2P) and maxed Arena bonuses (which is pure fantasy at this point given the broken nature of Arena.)

Yes, you will want ACC at least as much ACC as the guidelines for difference stages of the game given in various sites, including the Reddit board for the game.

So you will either want a good Accuracy set, OR you can use a Perception Set if the RNG gives you a nice one in the Forge, and enough substats across your gear to get the score to where it’s at least decent.

The minute my Advanced quests gave me two nice Perception pieces with ACC substats, I changed out my Tayrel’s gear and his damage potential in Clan Boss soared.

  20. Timbiotic

Isn’t he worthless without ACC? Curious why it isn’t top priority

  21. Ayumilove Post author

@Mr. Green: I have both Tayrel and Stag Knight fully ascended max level 60. Stag Knight replaces Tayrel in all end-game Stage 20 Dungeons that aren’t Magic Affinity. I haven’t use Tayrel for a long time after getting Stag Knight to optimize my dungeon speed runs.

  22. Mr. Green

    Tyrel or Stag Night?
    Both have similar capabilities.

  23. J

The text says Exalt in Death. The picture shows Charged Focus. What did you mean it to be?

  24. Dave Astle

@YogaDude69: Adding to Ordosan’s response, Tayrel is worse in Force than Spirit or Magic due to the negative affinity, which will result in about a third of his debuffs failing to land due to weak hits. He’ll also take more damage.

  25. Ordosan

yogaDude. you are misinterpretting what the stars even stand for.
all star ratings arn’t taking into account team groups.
Star ratings are only taking account on there kits and a few stats. debuffs, buffs, afinity,CD

  26. YogaDude69

I’ve no idea why you are giving him only 3/4 stars on potions. Like yes, he might not have reduced healing, steal buffs abilities and so on but you only need only one such hero in your team anyway and all that’s left is dealing with some trash mobs and mid-game difficulty bosses which is something that he excels at and the overall utility he brings is absolutely insane.

Like potion keeps aren’t even that difficult to begin with and pretty much any somewhat decent composition would be able to clear them so giving a hero 3/5 stars because he lacks a very situational skill that you might not even need to clear the dungeon doesn’t seem correct here.

And how he is better for spirit and magic keep than force keep? I don’t get it.

  27. Bahi

    @R23wewe
Upgrade Tayrel, he is much better 😀

  28. Ramonade

    @R23wewe
Upgrade directly Tayrel, he does everything warmaiden does but better ! And his stats are better too. I would only use him in my team with others champions

  29. R23wewe

    3rd Day in the game

  30. R23wewe

Hey Ayumilove, I have just opened warmaiden and tyrel one after another, could you advise should i upgrade both of them or not? If yes which should i start first, and can i have both in the same team?

I dont know a lot of things, Its my 3rd in the game

  31. wattu

Nvm, I understand now. Faction – Grade, Type, Affinity

  32. wattu

Hi. I was wondering what that text is in the title after the champion’s name?

  33. Jeff

How do folks use Tayrel in arena? Is he kind of a better version of Warmaiden, as far as having an AoE attack with -60% DEF debuff? So he should go right before other high-damage AoE attackers? Or is there more I’m not appreciating that might change how I should try to outfit him?

  34. Jorish

Under support, the second item is listed as exalt in death but in the picture you show charged focus.

  35. Decateur

@_Nailz_ I think what you’re missing here is that the list is in alphabetical order

  36. _Nailz_

You place Tayrel 30th out of 30 Magic epics? I consistently see him listed in the “S” class of overall champions and you have him last in his class of magic Epics? What am I missing here? this website has been very helpful but on this one I’m scratching my head.

  37. Ayumilove Post author

@microplastiker: It’s easier to get 100% Critical Rate from glove main stat rather than relying on substats alone when you are starting your journey in RAID Shadow Legends. Once you’re at end game (lots of Level 60’s champions), you will be primarily focusing on farming gears on Dragon’s Lair and Spider Dungeons (Level 13~20) for equipment that have substats Critical Rate and Speed. If you are able to achieve 100% Critical Rate from substats alone, swap the Gloves to Defense% to deal additional damage.

  38. microplastiker

Hey! First I have to say I’m loving this website, thank you for your work!

Some guys on YouTube say, you’ll need def% and lp% on your gauntlets and chest for every character in every clan boss fight to stay alive longer in these fights. You gave other recommendations on your website. Testet it myself on normal, couldn’t see any significant difference in result. Maybe you could explain why you’d choose crit rate over def or lp.
    Thanks in advance!

  39. DeclaredSnow

@Ayumilove I had so much sucess with one Relickeeper that I Fused Another one. mainly because they arent so hard to get. ( farming champoins IN THE CAMPAIN). This has Helped me a lot in progressing in the game. at that point in the game ( and to this day ) the Relickeepers are such heavy hitters, and they can take some hits because of their high HP / DEF stats, I am destroying most targets in the Arena if I get to start first.

also I have Very little heal or def in my lineup. The Self heal on the Relickeepers them alive and they pretty much handle themselves. I thought it was the best thing to do in my situation.

they are also doing a great job in the dungeons because of this. my best Relickeeper can solo stage 15 Arcane ( the boss ) and stage 12 minataur. just checking now if I can go highter as I have not focused on this for a little while. (uppdate: Playing while writing this. Destroyed stage 13 with a full squad ) and took stage 14 now. Minotaur doesnt damage my Relics enough. they where at 70% when he died. cant beat stage 15. the ads before the boss kill my squad.

Clan boss setup is High Khatun as L. relickeeper x2, Occult Brawler and Kael.
doing 4m per key on hard. I realy need a healer here and optimize Occult. atm he stands for half the dmg.

I am curently trying to do the missions but the progress has stopped since I cant beat the ICE golem lv 13.( auto farming 12 with a 100% win rate)

I will try to unlock more champion vault slots and keep a copy of each unique champion. great tip.

So for now. I should hunt for even better gear and wait for a Great / god tier champion? hopefully a def and or a healer? I can start working on feeders for the lv 60 after that now to.

im working on a Lifesteal set for Occult now. got him with a 2x HP and 1x def SET now. ( hp% and def% ( 5x star artifacts Blue/ rare ).

Thank you so much for your feedback!

  40. Ayumilove Post author

@DeclaredSnow: I was wondering why you Level up 2 Level 60 Relickeepers instead of 1. Is there a benefit of using both of them together? For my case, I used 1~2 AoE champions to bring down the enemy health substantially, so Relickeeper can finish them up with the Extra Turn on his A1 ability.

How is your Clan Boss Team setup? I would recommend having Occult Brawler (Poison debuffer), Tayrel (Decrease Attack, Decrease Defense), High Khatun (Speed Increase, Increase Turn Meter), Athel (Weaken) and Relickeeper (Damage). If you have an excellent healer, then replace Relickeeper with it. Otherwise, Lifesteal Sets are required to sustain throughout the lengthy battle or equip with Immortal Set to heal each turn.

For me, I would wait until I get a good champion that could help me progress certain dungeons (e.g. If you have many Magic Affinity champions that prevents you to complete the Force Affinity Dungeon Stage, try leveling up a Magic/Force Affinity champion). I would have at least 3 Level 60 champions for each Affinity (3 Magic, 3 Force and 3 Spirit) at the start so that it can help me in most of the dungeon stages. Once you achieved that, you can start farming potions and silver from Dungeons to prepare for the next Champion Fusion. Unlock all 200 champion vault slot and keep a copy of each unique champion so you can breeze through (speed fusion) when the Champion Fusion begins.

  41. DeclaredSnow

Ayumilove, Great SITE. Hoping you could help me out here. So, Ive been playing this game for 88 days straight. now I have enough Chicken and fodder for my Third lv. 60 Champ. I am not sure who to pick.

    where I am.
    Completed the campain. 3xed everything.
I am at the moment farming these dungeons.

    Stage 15 Arcane keep
stage 12/13 in the other potion keeps.
    stage 9 spider
    stage 13 dragon
stage 8 fire knight ( could prob do highter but it has not been my pri atm )
stage 12 ice golem. ( I Cant take down 13, also here where I am stuck on the progress missions )

doing ok on the clan boss. Occult Brawler at 5stars is doing his part.
GOLD IV in the Arena. No issue farming here.

the question is. should I wait for a legendary champ to lv to 6 stars or do one of my Epics. Im getting a Void/ sacred shard in 5 days. ALso getting Dark Athel in two days

my best champs and the ones I use the most atm are two 6 star RelicKeepers ( 43k / 34K ) All skills Ascend maxed and good gear / masteries.

( 5 stars, with good gear and rares maxed skills )
Peydma, Hordin, Infernal Baroness, High Khatun, Accult Brawler, Jizoh, Kael, Athel, Elhain, Galek

Other options for my next 6 star. Tayrel ( reason I posted here now ) Alika, Crimson helm, Shaman, Canoness, Rearguard Sergeant, Bonekeeper, Karam, Alure and Cagebreaker.

thinking Tayrel because of my lack of def everywhere but not sure. also thinking KAEL or dark athel. Sorry for the long post ake book :/:)

  42. Frankx

I was beginning to think you forgot about me! Haha, thank you so much for this. I will attempt swapping in Romero for Yaga then and seeing how that goes over lol.

  43. Ayumilove Post author

@Frankx: You can use Altan (A1 Decrease Attack, Increase Ally Defense), Romero (Tanker and Healer), Apothecary (Healer, Speed buffer), Juliana (HP Burn, Poisoner, Unlock Partner skill of Romero) and Athel (Weaken).

  44. Ayumilove Post author

@Riddler: That would also work too. I would choose Shieldbreaker since Tayrel will be the 2nd to go (after the speed buffer champion) to decrease enemy defenses before the 3rd attacking champion deals his massive damage. I’ll be updating the Tayrel mastery build by swapping the “Arena” with the “Clan Boss and Dungeons” to use Offense and Support so that Tayrel Decrease Defense can last longer on the boss. For the Offense and Defense route, its build towards Arena, Campaign and Faction Wars.

  45. Riddler

There is no third Tier 2 mastery on the “Clan Boss, Campaign, Dungeon” build. I assume that means it doesn’t really matter what you take? I personally use Blastproof (-5% dmg from AoE) since most bosses have AoE attacks.

  46. Frankx

@Ayumilove: All I have at level 60 is Altan, Yaga, Romero, Juliana, Tayrel, Zelotah, Athel, and Apothecary.

People I have at level 50 which maybe I can work on upgrading are: Bystophus, Prince kymar, Queen Eva, Relickeeper, Doompriest, Shatterbones, Sinesha, Dark Athel, Tallia, Adriel, High Khatun, Hellgazer, Coldheart, Kael, Galek, and Hyria. But I don’t know who would synergize together well lol.

    Thoughts on composition?

  47. Ayumilove Post author

@Frankx: What are the other Level 60 champions (full mastery) you have in your inventory apart from Yaga, Altan, Apothecary, Juliana, Athel and Tayrel? I would advise upgrading Great Hall “ACC” (Accuracy) for those debuffer champions that are low in Accuracy. In addition, equip them with Banner and Chestplate with primary stat as Accuracy, or have most of your equips provide substantial Accuracy substats. Once that is achieved (debuffs can land), switch Yaga with Altan for his excellent Defense Aura so Tayrel can benefit as well. When you swap Athel with Tayrel, you will be losing Weaken debuff. This means you will be dealing less damage overall from Warmaster or Giant Slayer T6 mastery. Once you have a Counter Attack champion, you can replace Yaga with him, so your champions with deal damage whenever Clan Boss attacks.

So currently my Clan boss team is comprised of Yaga the Insatiable (leader), Altan, Apothecary, Juliana, and Athel. I leave Yaga to lead as he is helping everyone have better accuracy to use those debuffs on Nightmare CB. I’m in desperate need of a group buff for counterattack but I do not have a champ for that yet. I wanted to replace Athel with Tayrel since his Def effects his dmg and have Altan lead but then my accuracy suffers and Juliana wont land HP Burn, along with the other debuffs. Any advice of who is least valuable on my team that I should potentially swap out with other options ?

@Frankx: Altan will be better for Clan Boss as he provides better Aura Defense which in return also increases damage for Defense Champions and decreasing the damage taken from enemy attacks. In addition, Altan provides Increase Defense which aid in Clan Boss survivability. If you have both Altan and Tayrel, do put into consideration of how they will synergize with the other champions in Clan Boss team setup such as whether they provide Increase Ally Defense and Decrease Enemy Defense. Great team synergy allows you to achieve greater damage result on Clan Boss.

Question, after the changes is Tayrel still considered better than Legendary Barbarian – Altan for Clan Boss?
