Swarmspeaker Zyclic Champion Lore Synopsis
The Cult of the Fang is the most rapidly expanding and influential Dark Elf religion, despite its initial inconceivability to the Elves who first arrived in Durham Forest during the War of the Elves. It revolves around the veneration of the enigmatic Insect Lords, beings bound both physically and spiritually to the heart of Durham. The cult is highly decentralised, with no singular hierarchy or figurehead, as adherents choose to worship individual Insect Lords or multiple aspects of these great entities. Various sects within the cult have emerged, including the ascetic warrior-monks known as Spiders, the assassin-worshippers called Eviscerators, and the proselytising Fang Clerics. Among the many leaders, Swarmspeaker Zyclic stands as one of the most revered and feared figures, known by numerous grandiose titles, including ‘Beholder of the Chitin-tide’ and ‘Guide of a Billion Fangs’.
Zyclic’s followers, called Chitterers or Scuttlers, populate Dark Elf settlements across Durham Forest, spreading his influence far and wide. Though he holds no official authority over the Dark Elf Houses or Guilds, his reach is such that few can afford to ignore his demands. His fearsome reputation alone is often enough to bend others to his will. Zyclic’s grotesque appearance, riddled with parasites and crawling insects, adds to his unsettling presence. His violet skin is covered in feeding grubs and beetles, while his mouth teems with writhing worms. The creatures dwelling upon him leave a constant trail of flesh-eating maggots, reinforcing his aura of dread and revulsion wherever he treads.
Zyclic’s armour, fashioned from the shells of obsidian beetles and fangmoth cocoons, is both highly durable and flexible, housing mites and spiders in its crevices. His signature weapon, a massive staff with a serrated blade shaped like an insect’s claw, is capable of slicing through multiple enemies in a single swing. However, his true power lies in his unparalleled connection to Durham’s swarms. With a mere tap of his foot and a buzz of his teeth, he can summon countless flesh-eating creatures, capable of reducing a living being to bones within moments. This devastating ability ensures he is never truly alone, always accompanied by a seething mass of loyal, ravenous minions.
For years, Zyclic remained distant, content to expand the cult’s reach and strengthen its devotion to the Insect Lords. However, the arrival of a dragon of Siroth in Durham has disrupted the delicate balance of faith, luring many Dark Elves towards the Shadow God. In response, Zyclic has intensified his efforts, solidifying alliances with fellow cult leaders such as the Pincer Prince and the Webweaver Supreme. He has also engaged in clandestine meetings with Ruel the Huntmaster, communicating through pheromones and high-pitched clicks, seeking deeper understanding of the Insect Lords’ will beyond the messages conveyed by his swarms.
Despite his formidable power, Zyclic remains unaware of his true insignificance to the Insect Lords. He has never seen them in the flesh, nor does he grasp that he is merely a disposable pawn in their grand design. As the battle for faith in Durham Forest looms, he is determined to fight for his deities, though he cannot foresee whether the Cult of the Fang will survive the coming storm.
