Royal Guard Review

Royal Guard is an Epic Attack Magic affinity champion from the High Elves faction in Raid Shadow Legends. With a mighty joust as his trusty weapon, Royal Guard strikes fear into the hearts of his enemies with some serious damage! In fact, he’s the hardest-hitting Epic in the game when it comes to taking on Dungeon Bosses, and one of the toughest all-around champions out there! His A2 ability is nothing to scoff at either, as it scales up in power as your foes’ Max HP increases.

But that’s not all, folks! This hero also boasts a single-target decrease Defense ability on his A1 and an A3 attack that hits multiple times and slows down enemy turn meter and speed. Talk about a force to be reckoned with!

To get the most out of Royal Guard, you’ll want to ensure that he has a 100% Crit rate, high accuracy (think at least 200 for level 20 dungeons), and decent speed (though not as much as your team’s decrease defense debuff). And don’t forget to pack on as much Crit Damage as possible! To keep him alive and kicking, equip him with an HP% chest and an HP ring.

In the end game, Royal Guard is a valuable asset in speed farm teams for Dragon, Ice Golem, and Spider, and a must-have for Faction War teams. Plus, with the recent release of Doom Tower, his signature A2 is the key to taking down Agreth, provided you can one-shot those pesky spiderlings or nuke ’em before they even spawn. And let’s not forget about his awesomeness in the Iron Twins Dungeon – this champion is truly a beast!

Royal Guard Champion Lore

Every ruler and warlord of Teleria has their elite warriors. For the High Elves of Aravia, who already see themselves as Teleria’s finest, the expectations are perhaps higher than anywhere else. Their standard of excellence is the Royal Guard, who answer directly to the reigning Aravian monarch. Drawn from the military’s best soldiers, they are master warriors trained in polearm-based defensive combat. Their first and foremost duty is to protect the monarch’s life, and those of the royal family, and beyond those duties they can be deployed at the King or Queen’s discretion. They are an effective means of projecting the monarch’s power and personal will, useful when courtly politics and factionalism bog down the royal agenda.

Royal Guard candidates have their backgrounds exhaustively researched and their psyches probed deeply. Ideal Guards are emotionally resilient, loyal, and driven. Many are drawn from the upper echelons of the Aravian army by referral, others are scouted by Aravian spies and recruited. The selection process and associated induction ceremonies are steeped in a thousand years of tradition, as are their traditional arms and armor. They wear impartial masks, to symbolize their renouncement of their past lives and former selves. Their coat of mail incorporates designs reminiscent of leaves, for the Elves’ natural purity, and scales, for the longevity and tenacity of Elvenkind.

Once inducted, Royal Guards serve for life. They adhere to strict schedules based on the movements and activities of the royals, while allowing for needful rest and periods of training. While martial excellence is the primary selection criterion, in their lives as Guards their skills often broaden to include various domestic duties, clerical tasks, and other courtly functions. Regardless of what duty they are seen to be performing, a Royal Guard is prepared at any moment to defend their liege. A monarch may converse in a relaxed way with a visitor, only for a wall of steel spears to coalesce around their royal personage at the slightest sign of danger or affront, as the Royal Guards nearby suddenly turn from silent onlookers into fierce guardians. One Royal Guard known as Clerebon is lauded to this day as an archetype of the Guards’ fidelity and bravery. He served the royal family during the long and tumultuous War of the Elves, when families and loyalties were torn apart by the schism between the Elves who followed a dream of Darkness and freedom, and the Elves who stayed true to their ancient ways. Always a breeding ground for schemes and paranoia, the Aravian royal court was in a rolling boil of uncertainty and danger at this time, with Dark Elf agents and sympathizers constantly trying to enact a coup d’etat to end the war with a decapitation of the Aravian state. Clerebon was already a trusted veteran who had served for over six decades, and he was put in charge of safeguarding two of the royal heirs, a prince and princess who were fraternal twins.

Clerebon did not leave the royal twins’ side for days at a time, sleeping only for short intervals. He watched them at play and while they studied, their tutors and attendants scrutinized at all times by the hawk-eyed, silent, and stern-masked figure waiting always in the wings. His presence alone deterred many would-be assassins. One attempt, involving a venomous snake placed in the children’s’ playroom, was thwarted when Clerebon grabbed the serpent by the head without hesitation and crushed it to death. It is said that the spirit of Aravia itself protected him from the serpent’s fangs, to repay him for his years of selfless service.

Really enjoying Royal Guard. Helps me farm Dragon 20 real solid
Made a mistake in the blessing for Helmsmasher but he doesn’t really do that well .. rather put him in Warmaster

  2. Ayumilove Post author

@Marie or Go My Love: I have added the Blessings Recommendation for Royal Guard at the top of the page! You could go with either Crushing Rend or Phantom Touch.

  3. Marie or Go My Love

Hi Ayumilove, thank you for you site, I have one question for you : what blessing would you put on royal guard.

    Thank you very much!

  4. 4shock

Would Royal Guard be an improvement on Rotos for FK 25 and Dragon 24, I need faster wave clearing?

  5. Bahi

Dexidin: Level Up to 50lvl will be best solution. If you are able to dress RG to C.DMG 200+ (-:

  6. Dexidin

Hi ! i just pulled a second Royal Guard today . Is it worth leveling and gearing him up ? Where would it be useful to have 2 RG in my team?

  7. Bahi

    Strawberry369:
You need CRIT DMG as high as possible 200 minimum – 250 optimalů – 300+ is perfect
    ACC +-200 to reduce TM(coldhearth)

You dont need ATK that much – just Crit Rate and Crit DMG

  8. Josh

When yall gonna update the doom tower stats?

  9. Strawberry369

I have septimus, royal guard, cold heart, armiger and madame serris. What stats should i have for a spider nuke strategy.

  10. Punx

I use him in doom tower (normal) all the time. For levels where his affinity is weak against, I will sub in either Yannica or Coldheart in his place. With the right support team he can really speed the runs up because of his A2. The support he needs is an aoe def down (serris, tayrel etc) to just about one-shot the whole group, and also reviver or shield/ally protect/def up/atk up/etc as he quickly dies if targeted.

  11. JerichoEU

Is this champ viable in Doom Tower?

  12. ArcticF0X

I love this champion, I have maxed him out, and I think he really should be in the S-Tier. However I would have to suggest revising from 5-star to 4-star on Ice Golem. He has a positive affinity and good Dungeon aura, clears the waves in record time BUT… if he uses Takedown on the boss with both minions alive, it can trigger Frigid Vengeance with 100% ignore defence (50% for each minion). This can easily wipe a team of 50k HP champions in a single shot. Some kind of mitigation would be required (Unkillable setup or Block Revive kills of the minions)… but I think the potential for these backfires should reduce his rating. I found it happening once every 4-5 runs on Ice Golem 20, which is a waste of 16 energy. Switched to Coldheart and she does much better, using Heartseeker on the minions first then only on the boss after they are dead. Thanks.

@Tephulio: Royal Guard is an excellent champion for late game speed farming dungeons. I would not recommend using him as a skill up or as a 4 star chicken/fodder. Keep him in your vault if you do not have resources to gear him up for dungeon speed farming. He will require a lot of Critical Damage and some decent HP, Defense and speed stats to nuke the enemies quickly, while surviving the boss AoE attacks.

  14. Tephulio

Just grabbed an extra Royal Guard during a double drop chance event, think I should use for skill up chance or better to have as high star food?

  15. Ayumilove Post author

@Plasma: Royal Guard is for mid-late game content. He requires high Critical Damage and Critical Rate to deal high amount of damage to enemy who has high amount of HP especially bosses except for Clan Boss due to his passive skill that caps/limits incoming damage from skills that uses ENEMY MAX HP in its damage multiplier. In short, he is great for speeding up dungeon runs for late game accounts.

  16. Plasma

So I have a question, If anybody will even answer. On one of my alt accounts I pulled a Royal Guard very early in the game. Anyone know the best way to build him out to be usable in early game?

  17. Ayumilove Post author

@Jeff: You can obtain Royal Guard from Ancient Shard or Sacred Shard.

  18. Jeff

How do you get Royal Guard?

  19. Jhonatan p badillo

    @fejes úr
I think he only uses takedown if you have his or anyone else’s decrese defense. I’ve been messing around with him and i put him in a retaliation set so he always puts that debuff up. I wouldn’t recommend it tho, its not exactly working out.

  20. LinePK

Why he is not good for arena? I was thinking of replacing my Athel with him, would that be a good idea?

  21. ppp

@Fejes He will always try to debuff with A1 b4 attacking with A2…

  22. Fejes Úr

    Hi!

I just noticed that my Royal Guard did not use Takedown skill Dragon 20 on auto. Does anyone else had a problem with it?

  23. khazou

Hi, what if you eqiup RG with savage set & cruel set. 30% DEF off would be nice. ANd takedown skill (ennemy maxHP) would benefit of it, apparently ? so why not adding some more DEF off with HELMSMASHER (ok its 50% chances only, but on the long run, with regular odds, thats a lot)

    nah ? 🙂

  24. Destroyer39

@eseroth, base stats are at max level!

  25. Aquadorian

@ralph: see the discussion about Flawless Execution between Nov 3rd 2019 and March 1st 2020 below. The consensus appears to be that Warmaster is better for clan boss (due to Infernal Resilience), but it’s in places like Spider 20 and Dragon 20 that RG is at his best where, apparently, Flawless Execution performs better. But yeah, it would be good to see the math.

  26. ralph

I’m not sure I get flawless execution – could someone explain it to me. According to my math, it does more damage than warmaster only on bad guys with less than about 200k HP. Surely the point of RG is taking down high HP bosses?

  27. eseroth

    Hi Ayumi!

I have just recently got Royal Guard and I see his basic ACC is 0, not 10 as you stated. This is also proved in in screen of his you added 🙂

  28. LoonyL

Is it any good to upgrade ? Or to use for a other champions upgrade ?

  29. TheDax

    @Derp

if you go for bring it down, you have to give up something in the support tree in order to keep flawless execution. I think we can all agree that flawless execution doesnt need to be debated.

i run evil eye and cycle of magic from the support tree so giving up one of those for me doesnt seem good in the overall sense of the champion just to get bring it down. Also, everything in the masterys is for the ability Takedown. you dont hit twice with takedown in a single hit. so 8% is better than 6% (though those two masteries arent on the same level so this is moot).

in the end, this is a guide to help you figure out your champions. if all you do is mimic ayumilove then you’ll never learn anything. take the site as a starting point, and build your champs to best fit your style.

  30. Derp

    Howdy

thanks for the site and the guides, they are awesome

I’d say Royal Guard is like a 3 or so for Clanboss -maybe a 4. he’s not horrible: his A1 works and the A3 can place a speed reduction. but he just so low on defence. he’d be one of the first champs that I would try and replace if I were midgame (for CB)

Also, I was surprised that you don’t recommend “bring it down” mastery. in Spider and Dungeons – if he attacked more than once the extra 6% dmg would apply twice (12%) and therefore be more beneficial than even ruthless ambush 8%.
I’ve got both of those on mine cause I think they just add so much damage – especially on spiders

Just as another option for people to think about.
    Again great work !

  31. Ayumilove Post author

@Royal Guard: Thanks for your input! I have corrected the typo.

  32. Royal Guard

I love how royal guard is 4* at royal guard

  33. Nicky Frost

Apologies. Posted before reading the prior two comments.

  34. Nicky Frost

@Ayumilove Thanks for the great site, and the work you continue to put into it.
I suspect the last row of the “Grinding” column is meant to be “Faction Crypt”, not “Royal Guard”.

  35. wattu

@Imoto No no, it just means Royal Guard is pretty decent at being Royal Guard 😀

  36. Imoto

★★★★✰ Royal Guard ? this should be Faction wars i think.

  37. Ayumilove Post author

@all: Royal Guard’s mastery has been updated.

  38. Ayumilove Post author

@CrazyPencil: Royal Guard applies Decrease Defense on his A1 skill. This allows him and his allies to deal more damage with their skill and with the Offense Tier 6 Mastery (Giant Slayer / Warmaster). If you do not have any other Decrease Defense champions on your team, he is a viable choice since he can put up Decrease Defense with a high uptime. If you have champions that provides other useful buff or debuff in the Clan Boss team such as Rhazin Scarhide (Weaken + Decrease Defense) or Dracomorph (Weaken + Decrease Defense + Poison), I will swap him out with them. It’s all based on the current champion you have.

  39. hcd

RG is most certainly NOT 5 star in CB.

  40. A_GooDDoG

@CrazyPencil RG is 5 star in CB because his A2 does damage based on [ENEMY MAX HP] and, as you would expect, CB has a pretty high max HP.

  41. CrazyPencil

Don’t book RG unless you have books to spare. Book will get an extra 20% damage from Takedown.

  42. Coin-Shot

Is it worth booking Royal Guard or is he good without it.

  43. CrazyPencil

Curious as to your thoughts on why is RG rated 5* in CB?

  44. Ayumilove Post author

@ShalokShalom: Shield Breaker is used to reach the next mastery which is Ruthless Ambush. Whirlwind is not taken so that the Increase Speed does not mess up the orientation of the attack sequence. Shield Breaker can be useful if you want to speed nuke the Magic Affinity Dungeon Keep. Single Out mainly for bosses. I advise you to refer to these masteries as a guidance on how it would work for your team. It would take 2 Royal Guard nukes to wipe out the Spiderlings at Dungeons 20 even when they have Decrease Defense debuff on.

  45. ShalokShalom

Shield breaker? How many dungeon waves have shield?
RG is not used in arena.
No heart of glory, whirlwind of death and fury stroke?

Therefore single out? You know that royal guard is supposed to take entire waves in one hit with his take down?

    Why are you doing this?

  46. Jerry

    @Ayumilove
Why do you use ‘shield breaker’ and not a ‘grim resolve’? I’ve never found an explanation on this matter.

And having ‘cycle of magic’ in place of ‘bring it down’ doesn’t look logical – if you are trying to get as much damage as you can, get extra 6% every time (and much more on 2a) instead of 5% chance of decrease cooldown on 1 of 2 skills…

  47. Juice

Royal Guard is not a made for CB because of the passive “Infernal Resilience”. Many other champions can easily out perform Royal Guard in CB.

Royal Guards kit is designed for high HP dungeons such as Dragon 20 & Spider 20. Using Flawless Execution you can pass the 1 million damage in a single hit of his A2.

    Follow Ayumilove’s advide.

  48. gebwcwcwvfwqg

I see your point that Flawless Execution might do more damage than Warmaster or Giant Slayer. As you said Flawless Execution offers a flat damage bonus of 20% on 100% crit, while Warmaster is way more unreliable and capped for Clan Boss. That said I still think that Warmaster is the better choice here, because you’ll also have to keep the way to get these masteries in mind. For ‘Warmaster’ this is ‘Methodical’ a 10% dmg bonus for your default attack and ‘Bring it down’ a permanent 6% damage increase for Clan Boss. ‘Flawless Execution’ on the other hand has you stuck with way inferior choices (‘Blood Shield’ and ‘Cycle of Violence’ in your example masteries will never proc on CB). When looking at the whole tree I just think Warmaster will be the better choice if you’re just looking for a CB champion.

  49. Ayumilove Post author

@Tallon feiss ign minez: Royal Guard A3 (Ability 2 Skill) damage scales based on Enemy MAX HP which is similar to Warmaster and Giant Slayer. Using Flawless Execution will increase that damage further. In addition, Warmaster and Giant Slayer is not guaranteed to work 100% everytime. Flawless Execution Mastery synergizes with champions that are equipped to 100% Critical Rate, and both of these will outperform both Warmaster and Giant Slayer in terms of damage output. This applies to all Champion’s skill that deals damage based on Enemy MAX HP.

Flawless Execution will perform lesser damage towards Clan Boss as he has this Passive Skill called “Infernal Resilience” which basically caps the skill damage of your champions which includes Poison debuff, HP Burn debuff and Enemy MAX HP damage. Here is the skill detail “Decreases the damage the Demon Lord receives from [HP Burn] and [Poison] debuffs, as well as Skills that inflict damage based on enemy MAX HP. Immune to [Stun], [Freeze], [Sleep] and [Decrease SPD] debuffs, as well as Turn Meter reduction effects and HP exchange effects”.

In short, damage is already capped on Clan Boss and the workaround to this issue is to trigger as many high damaging Enemy MAX HP. This is the reason end-game Clan Boss team setup they rely much more on HP Burn, Poison and multi-hit champions using Warmaster and Giant Slayer, and further boost the damage output with Counter Attack buff.

  50. Tallon feiss ign minez

Why flawless instead of proc wm? I ask because with current masteries takedow is hitting for 175k on brutal and proking wm for another 60ish k. Avg about 230k would 20% more crit dmg make that big a diff?

  51. Ayumilove Post author

@Chris Ledlow: It’s recommended to get Flawless Execution for Royal Guard as his main skill highlight is based on Enemy Max HP. When this combined with high critical damage, Royal Guard can inflict damage above 100K

  52. Chris Ledlow

Masteries which one is it Warmaster or flawless execution?
