Mountain King Champion Lore

The Dwarves of Teleria are divided into two realms: Gloomdeep Hold, and the Skyiron Dominion. Both call themselves kingdoms, for both are ruled by kings. But that is where most of their similarities end. In Gloomdeep Hold, the Mountain King has absolute power over his territory, both above ground and below it. He bears the weight of ultimate authority in his kingdom, and if disaster strikes his lands he will be held responsible for any harm his people suffer. It is not a weight one carries lightly, and the pressure can sometimes push the Mountain Kings of Gloomdeep to foolish action — it has already nearly cost the kingdom its royal line. In recent times, King Duran the Avaricious pressured his only son, Prince Gnut, to embark on a foolish adventure in the hopes that the boy would recover artifacts that could prove the glory of Gloomdeep Hold. It was a journey that would nearly cost the prince his life, all for the sake of competing with the Skyiron Dominion.

The Skyiron Dominion is ten times the size of Gloomdeep Hold, and is not one kingdom, but many. The Dominion is divided into cantons, which stretch both above and below the vales of the Cloudspire Mountains, and each has its own Skyiron Mountain King. A Mountain King’s authority within their canton is strong, but far from absolute – they compete with guilds, nobles, militia captains, and others. Some groups have legal rights that the king cannot abridge, while others hold tremendous soft power and can compel the king to action or inaction. Then there is the political titan that is the Skyiron Navy. This and a few other institutions hold seats on the Grand Council of the Dominion, where matters affecting all Dwarves in the Cloudspire Mountains are discussed. If the Navy demand a tax of iron or soldiers, it is all but impossible for the kings to deny them. Some might see this as weakness, rulers bowing to the wishes of their officers. Those who say such things have likely never faced the wrath of a Skyiron warship. It is because of the Navy’s strength that the Mountain Kings do not resent their shared strength, and they bear their titles with pride.

However different the Skyiron Dominion and Gloomdeep Hold might be, they both trace their origins to the under-empire, a unified Dwarven realm that once stretched beneath the whole of Teleria. As a result, the armor and weapons of the Mountain Kings across the world are much the same. They speak the same oaths on their coronation, they carry similarly styled enchanted axes, and they wear identical crowns over their brows. In its heyday, the under-empire united every Dwarven holdfast in a vast network, some of which even wound beneath the seas. Most of the under-empire was lost long ago, but there are some who whisper that one of the lines of Mountain Kings reaches all the way back to the Dwarven Emperors of old. If this is true, it means that one king has the blood-right of absolute authority over all Dwarvenkind.

For now, these ideas remain only rumors. The kinship between the Dwarven realms has been so strong for so long, none have felt any need to unite them under a single banner. But relations between the cantons of the Skyiron Dominion and the cold fastness of Gloomdeep have strained in recent years, as the two are pulled apart by different alliances, different neighbors, and different beliefs. If the two Dwarven realms should someday turn on one another, those rumors of a potential Dwarven Emperor existing may rise up from the ashes of history to become a rallying cry. It may only be a matter of time before a power-hungry Mountain King seeks to reunite his people — not in brotherhood, but by the axe.

Mountain King Storyline

There are few sights as magnificent and terrifying as the Mountain King at the head of a Dwarven Army. By right of birth and by right of might, he is the sovereign of all Dwarvenkind, the undisputed ruler of all that lies beneath Mountains of Despair. His warlike bellow leads his kin to ever-greater feats of valour, and his skill is rightly feared by Ogryn and Demon alike. Still a young Prince, he had fought and slain a would-be king of the bloodthirsty Ogryns that sought to carve their domain from the outlying – and defenseless, as they imagined in their hubris – lands of the Dwarves. Later, he rallied his kindred against the forces of Siroth and personally defeated countless foes and the foul Demon that led the invasion. Now, he marches forth with the vanguard of the Dwarves for it is the King’s duty to assure his people remain safe and all who dare threaten them are thwarted. Armed with an axe that is said to have belonged to the progenitor of all the Dwarves, the Mountain King scatters his foes left and right with the fury of an awakened volcano. No armour can be enough to stop his fearsome weapon, not even powerful protective magic can turn it aside. To win the King’s respect and assistance is difficult, as is always the case with Dwarves, but his strength would be an undeniable asset to the Champions of Lumaya.

@Sokka: I have updated Mountain King rating for Clan Boss from 1 to 4.

  2. C. Fisher

In Arena I run (in this order) Raglin, (either A2 or A1 depending on the enemy speed) Madame Seris (A3), MK (A3 to wipe out the reviver/healer), Skullcrown. With decent gear, none end game. MK is a blast in this setup.

  3. ZodanPyraxis

I’m still trying to figure out why MK is sooo low on his ranking for Clan Boss. I understand he doesn’t bring anything to the table except damage output – but that he brings in spades. If you’re like me and use Riho Bonespear to bring the debuffs – he’s a quite suitable damage dealer.

    Just my opinion, of course.

  4. BigSyf

Disagree on Spider. MK’s naturally high resist and neverending pool of hp makes him an excellent weak affinity tank.

  5. DemonKiller

He is undervalued here. I use him everywhere, and it is the best damage dealer.

  6. Sokka

Ayumi, Mountain King on CB is top tier, he is used in a lot of teams to 1 key UNM, you must re-star him there.

  7. Vuki

I am sorry, it is my mistake, I was dumb. I checked his skill in the tavern and was not aware for a moment that not the ascended skill is shown.

    Pls, ignore my previous post.

  8. Vuki

I just got him and realized that the ingame text for his A2 is different than the one here.

“Attacks 1 enemy.” vs “Attacks 1 enemy. Ignores 50% of the target’s DEF.”

Does it still ignore 50% def or was it downgraded?

  9. Begone!

Got Mountain King 6star, ascended, masteries, but no books, and up to now did not get the proper amulet, and his gear is sub-standard – but he is my best damage dealer. Way better for example than Zargala whom I have fully booked, mastered, ascended, and 83% crit rate and 149% crit damage. Standard part of my doom tower team.

  10. Alek

Do you think he is good to defeat the Scarab King??

  11. DJ_Benji

MK deserves an “A” rating. I have him fully booked, and with 100k HP, 180% Crit Dmg, 2.9K Atk, 2.6K Def, 310 Resist, 2 Divine Life sets and 1 Divine Offense set (which puts a massive shield at the start), and he absolutely dominates in Arena. 1-shot kills all over the place, more than any other champ I’ve seen. His ability to stay alive and terminate enemies in one-shot more than makes-up for his slow speed.

Arena and Doom Tower, he’s my #1 damage-dealer.

  12. Tom Chapman Barros-Wing

I finally 6-starred my Mountain King and put him in a Shield set (with lots of hp% substats and 100%+ crit rate) as Ash recommended in a recent video, and boy—that REALLY works well. He still hits like a truck, but also protects the team very significantly through crypts and dungeons.

  13. Hossetur

I think MK is underrated for Fire Knight usability. He packs such a mean punch and with his a3 ignores even FK’s shield. Pair him with good mulithitters and when the shield is down MK smashes FK in half. Especially when you time it so that you can use it’s a2 that ignores 50% def.

  14. MaxBT

Yup, 20% crit damage in Masteries is a Waste, even sub-stat could give 20% crit damage, I would say never Waste your ultimate choice to take 20% crit damage.

  15. Myriad

I doubt between Helmsmasher and Flawless execution. Most important is that my MK kills an enemy every round in Arena. I built him with a crit damage above 230, so I wonder if the extra 20% crit damage from Flawless Execution helps much in reference with the reduced defense from Helmsmasher.

  16. Ayumilove Post author

@Tom Chapman Barros-Wing: Mountain King is kinda weak in Defense as most player just max out his HP. I use Soulbond Bowyer (Rare Spirit Champion) to deplete Mountain King high HP in Arena Gold Tier. His HP depletes like water seeping through a sieve. Not much usage outside of Arena. Also, he can’t be used to Speed farm Dungeons. Niche usage after reviewing each Youtuber video content.

  17. Tom Chapman Barros-Wing

@C.Fisher Thank you for that. I have been sleeping on MK for months because of this site, yet watching videos that sing his praises. So I work on him a little for like a day, then stop. Then go back to him later. I WANT him to be cool. But I’m squeamish about pouring resources into him, because he’s so low-rated here.

  18. C.Fisher

First off, the work you put in to this is legendary. Any Raid player, newb or vet should regularly use this site for quick reference on new champs. Thank you for all you do.

Regarding Mountain King— he may be the best example in the game to argue 5 stars is not enough stars to spell out a champs value in specific areas. I get that MK gets a low overall ranking because of lack of utility in multiple areas BUT for Arena he is arguably the best champ I’ve ever used. My MK has decent gear (not fantastic, no quad pull, not all 6 star gear) but he is a tank x10 AND he hits like a beast A1-3. Easy 60-100k per hit. Often, no… most of the time, it’s him vs two or three champs at the end and I still win! He takes a beating and keeps on moving. And since you don’t have to worry about his Accuracy you can focus on getting his CR and CD way up.

Back to original point, my highest recommendation that at some point you shift to a 10 star ranking for each category. And MK is my vote for a while 10 star rating for Arena. The five star system leaves people thinking he is good but tied with so many others. But I’d put him up against anyone in arena. What a champ!

  19. Raayna

Please move MK at least 2 tiers up… I know you base a champs performance in the whole game, but his current rank is genuinely extremely misleading… He is an amazing champ.

I see so many people sleeping on their Mountain Kings because they see his low rating here. With the amount of stars he has, he should be at least B tier.

He can’t be in the same category as champs like Gurptuk and Skull-lord…

Please reconsider your tier placement for him. Definitely should be at least in B.

  20. Destroyer39

    44 Stars = B Rank

  21. Voya

Just wondering what’s the reasoning behind having DEF% as the highest stat priority given that he’s an HP champ. Or are the stat priorities not in order? If not, I think it’d be super useful to readers to make a priority list sorted by priority for champions. Thanks.

  22. Ayumilove Post author

@Canine23: C Rank indicates his overall performance in all areas. For a specific area, you will need to view the specific listings where he is good at. He is a specialist for Arena Nuking Champion and Faction Wars. I would not use him elsewhere as he is not optimized for speeding up Dungeon/Campaign runs.

  23. Canine23

The “C” rank is extremely misleading and inaccurate. Definitely worthy of A or B at the very least.

  24. DJ_Benji

Absolutely under-rated after the updates. Gear him with HP%, HP%, Crit Rate%, supplement with Attack, Crit Dmg, and/or Speed, or simply more HP.

Deserves a “B” rating at very least, I think. Very useful in all areas except Fire Knight due to massive dps and durability (90K+ HP with 4-5-star sets).

  25. FLSUNDRAGON

This champion has to be hard for you to rank- hes god tier or close to it in arena and close to worthless at everything else.

I dont agree with the defense priority on him. Hes not a tank, hes a tanky single unit dps (different). His skills are all dps skills. No tank skills. If your opponent is letting you get 6 or 7 turns in a row to hit him, you’re going to win regardless of his build because their team is too slow.

  26. Ayumilove Post author

@ixxel: 3 Life Sets means 6 pieces of Life equipment (1 Life set = 2 Life equipment).

  27. Ayumilove Post author

@Bobbles the Mouse: You need some defense stats for Mountain King, so his HP doesn’t deplete too quickly. I have fought against high HP Mountain King’s (100K HP) and they melt like butter when being hit 6~9 times by regular attacks (not nukes). If you have high defense stats (around 4K Defense), the defense will absorb about 70~80% of the incoming damage before it depletes the HP.

  28. Bobbles the Mouse

Ixel he’s saying 3 life sets, not 3 pieces of life, in other words all 6 life… Not sure why you would use any defense sets though…

  29. ixxel

Why 3 pieces of life and 3 pieces of defense set?
Isn’t it would be better 4 pieces of life and 1 of defense ? Or even full life set?
I feel we are missing an set bonus… but I just started playing so I may dont know something

  30. bonky bonkers

Mountain king is soo under rated. Remember his in game ratings are mostly based on what he was before his 2 patches. Most people who score him don’t even give him a chance as a result. Look at all the top arena players that use him. He’s also useful pretty much everywhere that isn’t CB. Huge damage, comparable to the Turvold you have rated as god tier.

  31. NinjaKitty

Is he any good with a Shield Set? Or would the utility/survivabily be outweighed too much by the relative damage he would lose?

  32. Matthias Schuster

Why offense set, when he is hp based?

  33. Ayumilove Post author

@Guy: Thanks for sharing your analysis on Mountain King masteries! I have updated Mountain King’s masteries based on your recommendation.

  34. Guy

Arena-wise, Cycle of Revenge is a way better option than Retribution. When equipped properly with HP% gear, he doesn’t see chunks of damage coming off him.
Deterrence is also arguably more useful than Killstreak.

  35. Ayumilove Post author

@Synergie: The rating is given based on the Mountain King’s overall performance in all areas, not just specifically Arena Offense/Defense. An A rating is earned when he can perform quite well or provide excellent support to allies in battle in all areas (overall score for A rating is 50 stars and above).

  36. Synergie

    Hi,

    Nice guides!
But I disagree with this rating.
Mt King should be rank A, at least!
He single handedly carried me to gold 4. The other 3 heroes where there merely to support him as he did all the killing.
Im talking about 80k in one single hit. 50 to 30k in his basic attack. A total of 54k Hero power, with absolutely zero 6star artifacts.
He’s a single target killing machine that needs to be respected :p
I use him for everything, even spider, as his raw damage is so high, its just ridiculous not to use him… and it works!
My record in arena was 3580, thanks to him.

Anyway, good work with these guides and keep up the good work! 😀

    Thanks!

  37. Grave

Watch the video Nick, MK is awesome. I’ve got 3 of the ‘God Tier’ Legendary’s and this little guy is still my favourite. He’s an absolute beast if equipped properly.

  38. Nick

He should be HP priority now. HP percent makes him a lot more sustainable and his damage seems to scale better with health. Other than this he’s useless of course lol.
