Mathias Blackflail Champion Lore Synopsis

The story begins with the outbreak of the Skinwalker Plague in the Free City of Arnoc, plunging the city into chaos. As ravenous beasts and giant rats overran the streets, the city’s population suffered devastating losses. Amid this horror, a young boy named Mathias witnesses his father, a mercenary captain, torn apart by monstrous creatures. Mathias, who once took pride in his strength and cruelty, is powerless to stop the carnage. Overwhelmed with grief and rage, he flees the city and heads to the Land of Rebirth, home to the Sacred Order, vowing revenge on the Skinwalkers.

Consumed by vengeance, Mathias quickly rises through the ranks of the Sacred Order, known for his relentless drive and fierce combat skills. As he grows, both in size and brutality, he bullies his way to the top, surrounding himself with a band of cruel and sycophantic followers. His obsession with revenge deepens as news of a crusade against the Skinwalkers reaches him. Filled with a sense of purpose, Mathias eagerly joins the campaign, slaughtering enemies with unmatched fury in battles like the Retaking of the Granite Bastion and the Kyron Ravine Massacre. His methods are brutal, and he takes grim satisfaction in destroying those he views as vermin.

Mathias’ reign of terror lasts for years as he continues to wreak havoc on the battlefield, fuelled by his thirst for vengeance. However, during the Langden Town Uprising, he faces a monstrous Skinwalker that severs his sword arm. Despite the severe injury, Mathias fights on, eventually defeating the creature. Refusing to be sidelined by his wounds, he orders the Order’s healers to tend to his injuries and demands a weapon to replace his lost arm. The result is a black iron flail, integrated into a false forearm, which Mathias eagerly embraces as his new instrument of destruction.

With his new weapon, Mathias resumes his bloodthirsty campaign, joining crusaders in purging the Bone Temple in Narbuk. He crushes heretics with savage glee, each kill feeding his twisted sense of righteousness. His reputation grows, and he becomes known as ‘The Blackflail’, feared for his brutal tactics and relentless thirst for battle. Despite his disappearance after the Narbuk purge, rumours circulate about his fate, though the truth is far more sinister.

The Arbiter, recognising Mathias’ deadly potential, summons him from his Shard only for the most dangerous purgation missions. Alongside other savage warriors, he continues to fight against the forces of Darkness. However, the Arbiter is wary of Mathias’ growing frenzy, fearing that with each battle, he edges closer to becoming an uncontrollable force of destruction.
