Master Butcher Storyline

Where some hunters enjoy the thrill that their craft brings, for some it is not enough. The Master Butcher is exceptionally old and has long transcended the dullness of tracking and slaughtering beasts. In truth, his favoured prey are the outcasts that dwell in the caverns. And he displays the grisly trophies gathered from those hunts with unsettling pride. Obnoxious and bossy, the Master Butcher is nonetheless no fool. His orders may be made up of insults and petty demands, but they are usually sound. On the bright side, the less-than-subtle manner of the old man often brings him to the foe’s attention and leaves the rest of his party to fight unhindered. And though few would accuse this Dwarf of secretly possessing a heart of gold, some strange sorcery transforms his lifeblood into soothing waves of healing magic. Some say that this is his punishment, bestowed by a priestess of Lumaya that he had wronged. But as the Butcher goes into bouts of raving rage when asked about it, no one had been able to find out the truth of the matter thus far.

Herc Smash, mostly Bommal + Head of Decay, the rest of my team get wiped out damn quick but Master B survives. I’m nowhere near getting my clans 1M damage for Hydra but our leader started as a F2P same as me and gets that a “standard” Hydra team is difficult.

Btw chose Phantom Touch for him but it’s just been nerfed by Platinum (🤮), why?!?!

  2. Herc Smash

@Katie Marshall: I am testing Carapace vs Dark Resolve blessings for Master B. My focus is on Dreadhorn, Magma (provoke), Faction Wars, and Hydra head of decay! How about you?

  3. Katie Marshall

Can anyone help me please? I’ve just awakened my Master Butcher and can’t decide what blessing to choose to improve for Bommal the Dreadhorn.

I’m worried I’ll choose one that’s no good in Doom Tower.

  4. Aaron

Master butcher needs to be re-evaluated, hes one of only 3 champions that can keep the hydra head taunted by himself and he’s a clutch healer in Bommel. He’s the most useful rare I have other than Apothecary now.

  5. Siindel

I use him us healer with regeneration+ immortal gear with vogoth in same party he is awesome

  6. Riceaxe

frenzy + immortal is the way to go regarding artifacts.

Master Butcher is exceptional with strong single target heals (sethalia, Apothecary) or single target revivers (Rector, Siphi, Raglin)
He´s a very much like Vogoth in terms of healing for 100%(insted of 50%) but with turn cooldown.
Would I start a new account I would definitly build master butcher out for arena to counter the speed meta.
Frenzy set is perfect for him to cut in.
Don´t build too mucb defence on him…insted as much hp as possible.

  7. Dazdurnarr

Yes Butcher raise ally even when he died first, the next dead ally will raise.

I used him in DT paired with Magnarr against Rhino, and Butcher dead early, but when Magnarr faced the boss and die meanwhile raise again and finish the rhino.

  8. Eufigenie

Master Butcher revives ally even if he is already dead?

“Equipment Set for Arena, Campaign, Faction Wars
2 Defense Set, 1 Speed Set”

This is wrong. You don’t want to put him in defense sets as the HP damage he takes becomes the passive heal. You want as high a HP pool as possible to make the heal as high as possible. If you’ve got a defense set with ridiculous HP% substats, by all means, use it. But, you generally want one of the various 15% life sets or resilience, not 15% defense.

  10. sauce

missing an updated rating for DT and a built recommendation for Bommal

  11. Gabbebabbehabbe

Bro this champion is absurdly good! The stats you gave is too poor. Give it better at everything it should be around 3 star at everything

  12. Spinni

I was so confused when I went up against this guy in the arena. Let me explain:

I have a speed nuke team and so my team went first, my spirithost increased my attack, warmaiden decreased their defense, and I threw in high khatun in there for the extra speed buff from the aura. My elhain onehit their whole team with her valley of death skill, and everyone died.

This is where it gets interesting: Galek gets revived, the strongest guy on the other team, and I was worried, because this team had a much higher team power than I did, so I didn’t want to take my chances with the Galek. I onehit him again with my elhain using the lightning arrow, and somehow he suddenly became unkillable. I finally finished him off with my spirithost.

I soon found out that their Galek must have had divine parry, and soon I found out that master butcher was on this team, and he was the one who must have revived Galek.

    @The Todmeister

Pretty much agree on what you’ve said.
Precisely, Master Butcher is actually useful if you go manual, but on auto, it’s actually a waste, I had to replace him.

Madman is indeed pretty good, but with a lack of other AoE heros, he’s kinda alone in there.
At first I went with Vampiric on him, but the damage output is so low, that it was useless.
Then I went with Sleep (since I have tons of it, and with pretty good stats/rank), and he works pretty well (since his A1 chance for spread is decent), so I’m thinking to switch to stun when I get better better drops of it.

Regarding Ayumi’s ratings, yes, he/she does high-end reviews.
But it also helps since his/her tests are based off too from a FtP account, which makes testing/reviews even more complete, since testing a fully paid hero, and a “normal” FtP unskilled hero two completely different things, and I trust more a “in between” judgement (bewteen paid and FtP).
Overall, his guides are incredibly helpful, but yeah, sometimes your own limits require different paths/options.

Also, @Dargentina as you mentioned how Lifesteal doesn’t really benefit this champion, and yet Ayumilove makes it seemingly an invariable for every single champion writeup. I had to learn to take some of the suggestions on this site with a huge grain of salt.

You will note that every build that has Lifesteal goes down the offense mastery tree. These recommendations for gear are pretty much making the assumption you’re also fully mastering the champion. Some of us are FTP or LP players, and what someone like this site’s author recommends — while it’s nice to have the experience of someone with obviously a lot of gems, books and preimum buy stuff to experiment with — might not quite be attuned to the actual reality of someone who has to wait for freebie ticks for every single nugged we get aside from a gem pack or a mix pack and can’t rush their way to end game tier with every champion.

The reddit RAID community is far more helpful for someone in the early stages with a champ or with the game as a whole. That’s where I actually learned how to progress successfully in the game, not any of these end-game recommendation sites.

  15. TheTodmeister

I believe basing his damage on ATK was deliberate, for the very reason that he won’t do much damage when geared for support. So if his A1 won’t significantly damage the target, then it’s not wiped out by his clansmen.

While his AI is definitely not on key for full auto — it seems to be using default offense champ AI — so long as you’re actually interacting with the game on auto, and manually select the target you want him to hit when it’s his turn, it works. Click the AoE or big buff target so if they get provoked they’re forced to A1 him instead, bonus if he’s in the Frost gear, and you might actually take the target out of the game for two turns. I’ve been playing with it today as I’m leveling up my dwarf brigade for faction crypts, and it actually does pretty well with manual targeting. He has TWO attacks with provoke, not just one, and one of them is a combo group buff at the same time. He’s perfect support.

@Dargentina as for AoE dwarf champs on the Rare and below end, there is Madman, who has a seemingly effective — at least it’s entertaining to watch — AoE where he swings a huge log on a rope at the wave. I’m not really sure why Ayumilove rated him F tier, because he’s actually a really good attack champ as a part of the faction group.

  16. Donn Ross

I have him and combined with chevalier he is great. You get 4 buffs on all your champions at the same time

  17. Dargentina

I thought “hey, his skillset is not bad at all, and he doesn’t needs much books”.
Luckily, 5 books went straight to reduce all the cooldowns (note: Barking Orders is missing a “Lvl 2. 2 cooldown” in the description here), so I stopped there since the A1 doesn’t has any other benefit that damage.

Since there’s no warning or tips around about this guy, have in mind the following things about him:

-Heat Exchange, his most notorious skill, doesn’t works against bosses… but neither does against AoE regular attacks or counterattacks.
Basically, the description “When attacked” should be LITERALLY taken as that.
An AoE is not a straight attack to him (maybe if he’s used as target? hard to say).
A counterattack is neither a straight attack, so even if he hasn’t been hit yet, and goes against a counterattack enemy, HE doesn’t triggers.

-Barking Orders has a 4 turn cooldown -booked-, while it has a good buff for your team, it’s a little long of a wait to use it again. And his A1 is not particularly reliable, since the 30% can’t be upgraded with extra books.

Now, the main problem with him, it’s because how the AI works on auto:

If you use Provoke on an opponent, it’s a sure attack against him. Cool! But then all the other teammates attack that P’oked opponent, taking him out. So there goes the use of the skill, and your heal.

The AI will focus on the most weakened enemy, and that’s why Dwarves are so difficult to use in Faction Wars.
They excel at single attack/debuffs, meaning that HP Burn, stun, sleep and provoke will practically go to waste since they lack AoE attacks, and will quickly take down any disabled opponent, wich you actually don’t want (if there’s a disabled enemy, the idea is to focus on someone else, of course).
So yeah, the Provokes of Master Butcher are mostly wasted, unless there’s another very weakened enemy.

With that in mind, then the equipment problems appear:
-With too much defense, he won’t take much damage, so he won’t heal much. And the AI most likely pick a less armored ally to attack. I’m trying him with a Frost set, with little success. The AI avoids hitting him at all costs, so there’s little benefit from this set.
-With too much attack, he’ll weaken the enemy, and your allies will focus on him, wasting a Provoke, as said above. Still, his strategy is to Provoke and outlive (you want him to die after anyone else if that’s the case)… with low attack, a Lifesteal set won’t recover practically anything of health.

I guess the best route/options for him, is to stack him with pure health, maybe a Regeneration set, or 2-3 sets of Immortal, and Accuracy and/or speed, so he gets a pure support role.
As said, on Faction Wars or anything in Auto, and any type of Boss, he’s practically a waste, but it might be good on manual (Arena) to disable strong AoE attackers or pesky buffers.

  18. /|\(*,,,,*)/|\

You could do that with 4 of them and it would work better tho

  19. Naeces

It could theoretically be possible with two master butchers with speed over 251 to be near impossible to kill in campaign. You just need them to have 5 turns for every 2 by the enemy. Pyre will reset before they’re killed respawning the other butcher, rinse and repeat.
