Keberon the Underflame Champion Lore Synopsis
Keberon the Underflame was once a proud Pyrenei warrior who served the Acolytes of the Slither, a cult devoted to flame, lava, smoke, and Darkness. Unlike the scholars and priests within the order, Keberon showed his faith through strength and action. He trained, fought, and travelled in search of sacred places tied to the cult’s beliefs. His lively nature often clashed with the quieter scholars, yet the Acolytes valued him for his loyalty and his skill in defending their order from danger. Though he did not take part in their rituals or deep studies, his courage and dedication made him a respected guardian among them.
During his youth, Keberon explored the winding lava tunnels beneath a long dormant volcano while searching for forgotten holy sites. In the depths he discovered a group of ancient stone pillars carved with inscriptions written in the language of the Pyrenei. The writings described a series of demanding trials meant to test both the faith and strength of anyone seeking to become the chosen champion of a mysterious being known by many titles. Among these names were the One Below, the Watcher in Gloom, and the King of the Dead. Curious about the meaning behind the stones, Keberon brought word of his discovery to the Acolytes.
Most of the order could not understand the strange titles carved into the pillars. Only the oldest and most knowledgeable sages recognised them as belonging to an ancient Aethereal who had separated from others of its kind to explore the hidden depths of the world. After studying the inscriptions and maps etched into the stones, the elders urged Keberon to undertake the trials himself. Each challenge could only be completed on distant islands scattered across the Argolades, and the journey would demand both courage and persistence. Accepting the task without hesitation, Keberon set out to prove his devotion.
The trials soon became legendary. On the island of Aegemon he confronted the Aegemonic Behemoth, a massive shaggy creature said to rival a mountain in size. Later he travelled to the island of the Stone Sages, where living statues demanded he face them in a contest of philosophy and speech. When they mocked his words and outmatched his arguments, Keberon answered with force, smashing the statues until their leader admitted defeat. On another journey he encountered a being formed entirely of living flame inside a volcanic crater. Surviving its burning embrace, he earned the creature’s blessing and continued his long path.
After nine demanding years, Keberon returned to the volcanic steles in victory. The Acolytes had built a shrine around the ancient pillars and welcomed him as a hero. Guided by a powerful sense of purpose, he descended deep into the burning heart of the mountain to meet the mysterious being behind the trials. When he finally emerged, his eyes glowed with fire and a three headed canine walked beside him. Keberon could barely explain what had happened, saying only that overwhelming darkness and wild energy had filled his mind. No longer merely a warrior of the Acolytes, he left as a figure worthy of reverence, determined to create new trials so that others might follow the path he had completed.
