Gretel Hagbane Champion Lore Synopsis
Gretel and Hansel grew up with their widowed father, Bertel, in a dangerous marsh called the Bilebog, filled with man-eating quicksand and steaming tar pits. Like their father, they were learning to be woodcutters, working hard to support themselves. One night, while searching for herbs to add to their stew, the siblings ventured too deep into the bog and soon found themselves lost. Exhausted and frightened, they were overjoyed to spot the welcoming light of a small cabin. Approaching it, they met a young woman named Nell, who invited them inside for warmth, food, and shelter, claiming to live alone in the bog gathering herbs. Though Hansel eagerly accepted her hospitality, Gretel felt uneasy and mistrusted Nell’s tale.
Gretel’s suspicions grew as Nell lavished Hansel with sugary treats and insisted they stay overnight. Her persistence seemed strange, especially since Gretel had never heard of anyone surviving alone in the Bilebog. Ignoring Nell’s pleas, Gretel pressed for directions home, which finally pushed Nell over the edge. Enraged, the young woman transformed into a monstrous hag, shedding her charming guise. She seized the siblings, capturing them with surprising strength and holding them off the ground by their legs. With Hansel full of sweets, Nell chose him as her first victim, shoving him into what appeared to be an oven. Gretel fought back desperately, managing to bite one of Nell’s fingers and break free, yanking a beaded bracelet from the witch’s wrist in the struggle.
In a fierce moment, Gretel pulled her brother from the oven, discovering it was no oven at all but a smoky bonfire, and that the cabin itself was made from bones and mud. With Nell reeling from their escape, Hansel hurled a burning log into her face, and the siblings fled, Nell’s furious screams echoing behind them. After running blindly through the bog, they stumbled upon a pebble trail, a familiar marker left by their father. Following it, they found Bertel searching for them and recounted their horrifying encounter with Nell. Determined to keep his children safe, he resolved to take them far from the witch’s lair, eventually leading them to new timberlands.
Once settled, Gretel and Hansel became drawn to tales of the Purifiers, a faction within the Sacred Order tasked with ridding the world of monsters like Nell. Hansel, enraged and hungry for justice, wanted to join them immediately, but their father persuaded them to wait until they were stronger and more experienced. Years passed, and they grew into skilled woodcutters, preparing themselves to fight for their cause. As Bertel’s health waned, he encouraged them to pursue their quest, and with his passing, the siblings set out to join the Purifiers, honouring his last wish.
As members of the Order, Hansel and Gretel fought to rid the world of evil, taking on missions to hunt witches and shape-shifters. During one encounter, they came across a witch who reminded them of Nell, using children in her cruel rituals. In the witch’s possession was a bracelet identical to the one Gretel still kept as a reminder of their escape. The charm pulsed with an eerie resonance, hinting that their childhood foe was not yet finished with them, setting the stage for an inevitable, fateful confrontation.
