Ghostborn Champion Lore

Though he was born the son of Lumaya worshipers, the Elf who would become known as Ghostborn knew at an early age that he was destined for a different, darker path. He grew to adulthood on the frontiers of Aravia, an odd, sickly child among a clan of haughty aristocrats overseeing a community of Human farmers. He lacked the forceful nature of his kin, preferring his own company to that of his peers. He hid himself away, content to spend his days haunting the family library, or else sending away for books from other archives, at no small expense. The subject matter of these volumes was invariably the same; the history of Aravia, its peoples, its wars… and its religions.

While his family worshiped Lumaya, Ghostborn had no interest in such an uncommunicative deity. There were other beings who were less remote and, more importantly, willing to talk to their worshipers. He was fascinated by spirits such as the Dreamwalker and the Lord of Fangs. But one in particular drew his interest… the fell entity known as the Heartrender.

The Heartrender is one of the more enigmatic spirits in Aravian cosmology; like the Lord of Fangs, it is not a god, but something else… a totemic ancestral spirit, revered only by certain Elven families. In return for their devotion, the Heartrender supposedly supplied them with mystic power and protection. Ghostborn’s research revealed that his family was one of those with a link to the Heartrender, though they had long since forgotten. He became obsessed with making contact with the spirit.

But in order to communicate with the Heartrender, Ghostborn needed to be able to perform the correct rites. To that end, as he grew older, he studied the mystic arts. His family, having long despaired of him doing anything useful, were pleased by this sudden change of heart. But his studies soon took a worrying turn as he experimented with ancient blood-rituals long forbidden by Aravian society.

It started small; a few drops to increase the potency of a sending. Then, the sacrifice of a small animal in order to commune with an ancient spirit bound to a boundary stone. Finally, Ghostborn took blood from one of his family’s Human servants in an attempt to bind the ghost of an ancestor, so that he could question the dead Elf on certain matters pertaining to worship of the Heartrender. This was the final straw for his family, who had turned a blind eye to his earlier experiments. Necromancy was a step too far.

When confronted, Ghostborn swore that these indiscretions were merely harmless inquiries into a long-neglected field of study. He readily acquiesced to the demand that he cease and concentrate on more practical spellcraft. Or so he appeared to do. In reality, Ghostborn continued his experiments, and as his skill at blood magic increased, the former recluse became, to all intents and purposes, a charming, handsome example of Elven nobility.

It was at this time that Ghostborn succeeded in making contact with the object of his quest, albeit not in the way he intended. Instead, the Heartrender, or something claiming to be it, appeared to him during his daily meditations. It told him that it needed a far greater sacrifice to fully manifest… one with meaning. Animals would not do, nor would the blood of servants. Instead, he must give it the blood of those closest to him.

Ghostborn understood and, upon awakening he immediately set about giving the Heartrender what it wanted… the lives of his family. Ghostborn’s skill at magic far exceeded that of his kin and he soon baptized himself in their blood, as the Heartrender commanded. As it washed over him, the Heartrender whispered to him that this was but the first step. For there were others, like him, and it was his duty to see them all baptized in blood as he had been, and given over into the service of the Heartrender.

Ghostborn left Aravia soon after. Acting on his earlier research, he traveled to Durham Forest, where he soon tracked down more descendants of the original Heartrender worshipers and gathered them to him, using promises of power and his own eerie charm. Soon, he’d recreated the ancient cult, with all its attendant blood-sacrifices.

But if the Heartrender is pleased with this, Ghostborn can’t say, for the spirit has not spoken to him since he killed his family; a fact he has not revealed to his ardent followers. Yet Ghostborn holds out hope that his master will visit him again, if only he provides the correct sacrifice.

As such, Ghostborn and his new followers now stalk the undergrowth-settlements of Durham Forest, spreading their dark gospel to any who will listen… and claiming the blood of those who do not.

@Tymelard and @JimHicks You’re both technically right. What Jim says is correct. Without books added, his A3 has a 75% chance to land the irresistible Decrease Defense. Once fully booked it becomes a 100% chance to land the irresistible Decrease Defense.

  2. Tymelard

@Jim what are you on about cracker? booked it is %100 and can ONLY be stopped by block debuffs.. i see why so few waste time on this site.. shitters and bad info..

  3. Jim Hicks

Jase & Sin: His A3 “Has a 75% chance of placing a 60% [Decrease DEF]”
That means he will place the -DEF 75% of the time.
It can’t be resisted WHEN HE USES IT (which is 75% of the time)

  4. Jase

I have just pulled ghostborn, his a3 says can’t be resisted, but multiple times it doesn’t land, on waves and arena, I’m confused, does he need ACC to land the def down on a3?

  5. NosMoo

    Isn’t Ghostbrn’s A2 muktipliers just like

    A2: (speed/100) + 2.0 atk ?

Could be easier to read it typed like that 🙂

  6. sin

I think he’s bugged. I have him booked so his decrease def is 100%. but sometimes his a3 just don’t land. and it’s not a matter of weak hit. sometime it happens against champions of the same affinity.

@YoMammasBoy: Ghostborn’s A1 Skill “Energy Bolt” has a 50% chance to inflict the Decrease Defense debuff. The skill upgrades will provide a total of 50% (10% + 10% + 10% + 20%) upon maxing the A1 skill, which results in a 100% success rate of applying the debuff (50% base + 50% skill upgrades).

  8. YoMammasBoy

@ayumilove You’re doing an awesome job with this site. Can I recommend a correction on Ghostborn’s a1? The last level (Level 5) shows up as “Buff/Debuff chance +20%”. With all of the other levels booked, this would bring the buff chance for the ability up to 110%. I think you might have meant “+10%”. Again, no criticism and much appreciation.

@arcticF0X with a good team, you can afford to have 1-2 champions that don’t have multihit, even for 21-25. My ~2 minute team has two. Coldheart is also way less useful on 21-25 due to the reduction in TM and max HP abilities. I don’t use her.

IMO, Ghostborn still deserves a high rating for FK because: he’s the right affinity for 20, 24, and 25, his can’t-be-resisted Def Down + buff is ideal for wave clear consistency with Seer (and the waves are the most time-consuming part of runs), and his heal reduction is critical for 21+, since it’s not as easy to prevent the boss from getting a turn.

I don’t have Ghostborn, but he’d improve my team.

  10. ArcticF0X

I really recommend you reduce him to 4-star for Fire Knight. This rating looks not updated since the addition of levels 21-25. With 12 shields now on the FK (rather than 10), you cannot be taking single-hitters, and he doesn’t contribute any TM control. Sure he has Heal Reduction but you probably can’t clear FK 21-25 without Coldheart who is a Rare and brings that anyway.

    Probably 4-star for Arena too.

  11. ArcticF0X

Ghostborn was an early pull for me and I used him in arena right up to the point where I got Arbiter, when he became useless. There are multiple champs who do ATK up and also boost turn meter (Arb, Seeker, Gorgo). Then there are loads now with 100% chance AOE defence down and they don’t require 10 Leggo books. Ghostie is sadly a misfit because although the *idea* of ATK up/DEF down on one skill is great and unique, in practice he doesn’t even get in my three tag arena teams. Only time you might use him is early game before you get Arbiter or if you’re using say Apothecary for TM boost and not getting ATK up from that.

His heal rdn is useful in Fire Knight but he is a single hitter and you should be taking Coldheart there who gives you that anyway. Ice Golem and Dragon don’t heal making his Heal rdn useless there.

I like him and am still trying to think of uses for him but he doesn’t get in any of my teams due to not quite enough damage and not quite tanky enough. Sorry Ghostie.

  12. 7heK

if we use 3rd skill first in arena or any other 4v4+ map then why do we need charged focus as it doesn’t even need any accuracy even though 1st and 2nd skill needs the mystery is still totally useless.

    Hallo

    Ich muss Kritik ablassen.
Die Übersetzung ins Deutsche ist einfach nur grausam. Alle Videos sind auf Englisch.
Was habt ihr gegen deutschsprachige Menschen.
Das ist unfair, alle die Englisch können, werden im Spiel immer besser und der Rest ist euch egal. Danke auch

  14. Mushroom dude

Deserves 4-5 stars in fireknights, he’s strong affinity to stage 20 and singlehandedly clears the waves before bringing a heal reduction and def down on the boss. No multi hitters but with an alure and apithecary the shield will be down without him needing a 2/3 hitter

  15. Curlyfries29

Hey I’m new to the game been playing for about about a month now and just scored ghost born with an ancient shard, what’s the best build for him

  16. Tom Chapman Barros-Wing

Agreed–this site is fantastic, Ayumilove is always professional, and I would pay a fee for access. It’s a labor of love, and people should treat it that way.

I have spent hundreds of gems resetting my masteries after discovering this site, and have zero regrets. It’s all been a fantastic improvement. So much of what I’ve learned about this game after reaching later-game-ish level (NM boss, Gold IV, 40+ missions left before Arbiter) has come from studying Ayumilove’s guides and reading the conversations at the bottom of the pages.

  17. Heavy10mm

@taco @hurlo I’ve always wondered the same thing. Seriously if this site became pay to use, and you had to be a member, those same ill-mannered ppl would probably be in their mom’s purse trying to get her card to pay the fee.

Personally I would be lost without this site, and I’ve been playing since launch. Thank you @ayumilove for all the hard work. And idk how you remain so polite to some of these people. I’d freak out on them lol

  18. Ayumilove Post author

@Destroyer39: I have updated the typo 75 to 75%. Thanks for highlighting it!

  19. Destroyer39

Petrify says 75 chance instead of 75%

  20. Hurlo

@taco ikr? like they would pay for using this site. ungrateful brats.

  21. Untamed1217

I got him this week, very good champion.
Keep up the good work with the website!

  22. Ayumilove Post author

@Tfio: The masteries can be used for Clan Boss and Dungeons as well. I have updated the page to reflect this. 🙂

  23. Tfio

Are the masteries for clan boss/dungeons missing, or do you recommend the same as arena, campaign, faction wars?

  24. Ayumilove Post author

@cryomatic: It depends on your playstyle of Ghostborn champion in your party. If you are nuking the enemy with a Speed Meta Team, which means everyone in your team along with Ghostborn begins their turn first (170~200 Speed), it’s recommended to get Rapid Response so the buff that expires on your team members will have 30% chance to boost Ghostborn. If Arcane Celerity is used instead of Rapid Response, you then need to rely on the enemies (opponent’s champion) to survive that debuff and let the debuff expires for it to trigger the 30% Turn Meter Boost on Ghostborn. When the enemy is defeated in battle before Ghostborn’s debuff expires on him/her, it will also not trigger the Arcane Celerity. Therefore, its less beneficial for Ghostborn to use Arcane Celerity instead of Rapid Response. However, if you are playing a slow defensive team, then Arcane Celerity will help you out to catch up with the enemy.

  25. cryomatic

there must be an error in talent tree with rapid response, pretty sure you wanted arcane celerity

  26. taco

why is everyone shitty in the comments on here? thank you for this site, i appreciate the work that goes into it.
