Dark Athel Champion Lore

Not all stories have a happy ending, and sometimes even the most hopeful can turn dark. So it could have been with Athel, a hero of Light.

Certainly, Athel’s early years with the Sacred Order suggested that a life of unquestioning faith might not be her fate. As an initiate, her honest nature was matched by a headstrong streak. She showed particular disregard when it came to delving into matters her superiors considered off-limits. The Arbiter visited her to encourage her to further discoveries, but what if a darker apparition had claimed Athel’s attention?

What if, prompted instead by a spirit of shadow masquerading as light, she discovered something foul in the caverns beneath the Eternal Citadel, something that turned her away from the righteous path she has otherwise walked? Breaking into the wrong sealed chamber, she would have found a scene of horror – bodies littering a musty space, ancient-looking husks twisted in death-agonies. A place so redolent with evil, that Athel should have fled…

…But before she could do so, a brilliant light shone forth, coalescing into the figure of a woman. She was clad in the white vestments of a Sacred Order priestess, and wore a serene-looking mask. Introducing herself as Elegaius, she claimed to be a transcended spirit seeking out a direct connection with Lumaya. As part of her quest, she had once organized a great, holy service in this very chamber, but forces of Darkness had interrupted her efforts. With Athel’s aid however, Elegaius hoped that the service could be repeated, this time successfully.

Naively captivated by the priestess, Athel accepted. Over the following months she spoke to many fellow initiates, convincing them to gather at an appointed hour in the old chamber. As Athel led the service, Elegaius materialized and a deep magical connection formed between them, but it swiftly became apparent something was wrong. The light around her was rotten, and her mask was now a black and terrible visage.

Athel realized she had been misled. As the screams of the other initiates filled her ears, she tried to break her link with Elegaius, but could not. The souls of her friends were torn from their bodies, feeding the corrupt spirit as Athel, overwhelmed by the magical backlash of the connection, collapsed.

When Athel awoke among the corpses, she found her flesh pale and cold, her body unfeeling. To her horror she realized that her heart was no longer beating.

Athel had no time to come to terms with her Undeath. Knights of the Order stormed the chamber and tried to seize her. Acting on self preservation, she raised her hands, unleashing the dark magics that now suffused her body. She was shocked at the necromantic energies that answered her call, but also could not help but feel awe at their power. They caused the flesh of the knights to rot from their bones. As they decomposed before her, Athel fled, pursued by more of her erstwhile comrades.

Out in the wilderness, Athel was again visited by Elegaius. While Athel railed against her, the corrupt priestess showed her that there was only one way to undo what had now been done. Only through their immortality could either of them possibly find the time needed to break the veil and establish true contact with Lumaya – according to Elegaius, the Goddess of Light could then end the wider blight of Undeath. This twisted reasoning, coupled with the addictive nature of the dark magics that had taken root in her, saw Athel come to embrace her new destiny as a knight of Undeath. Thankfully for Teleria, this possibility is a mere fable.

@John She’s not awful, she’s just not impressive anywhere. Her a3 gives her potential for Spider’s Lair, but the multiplier doesn’t really scale up as well as it should. Her a2 might see some use now in Hydra, but it’s on a 4-turn CD. She definitely has uses for a player who doesn’t have anyone better…but there are a LOT of champs that do the content she does better.

  2. John

So she is rated 3* on hellhades and Kael is rated 4*, is he actually better? Kael leads my team and I was thinking she seems like she could be his replacement. Thoughts?

  3. Martz307

Glad to have had this champion for free just with timeplay. My Dark Athel is helping me to get the stars in the faction wars.

  4. Drauku

@ayumilove I would suggest adding Stews video to the list above. He’s the only one I found that has a video with a fully maxed-out Dark Athel. The conclusion doesn’t change, but it’s good to see a well-geared example that still underperforms.

Man I was hoping this champ would help alleviate my weaknesses in Faction Wars. Maybe I can get her to help me in there til I find a replacement. all the undead I have atm are weak.

  6. jonnnney

People’s assessment of Dark Athel seems unnecessarily harsh to me. She is designed for spider and isn’t great for spider, but she still has two strong AOE attacks and a 60% decrease def on her A1. She is good for clearing trash for Fire knight, Minotaur, Dragon, and Golem which makes it easier to bring in specialized units for each. She is good for Doom Tower trash. I’m 6 months in with 21 60’s and she is the best magic AOE champion I’ve got. She will get beat out by more specialized units eventually, but she is better than most epic’s I’ve pulled.

  7. Vino

Is she even worth keeping now given that all fusion events are only using new champs. All my other Undead seem to all better than her plus I am getting Dark Elhain in a few days.

  8. McVikingface

@Archnawan. Why are you all mad about free epic books for a useful champion man? Those extra copies could have been like Missionarys or Rippers. Eww

  9. Malachi

Nice to know I’m not the only one still using Saurus. He’s amazing as long as he gets first hit. Got a glass jaw tho.

  10. chris

4 stars for CB and 3 for spider?
    mmh

  11. Rodger Oden

Is it worth keeping any 2 Star champions (uncommon) or just them for food?

  12. Archnawan

I think it’s cool that you can get free epics even if B tier but…..I am pissed!!!!

Since getting this F2P toon that everyone gets I have pulled 4 more copies from shards. This is fking stupidity.

1 – Login reward chars should not even be in the random pull pool.
2 – In no way should this happen in general for any char given the amount of shards I have actually used and the available chars to pull. I have 5 copies of a rather useless epic, 4 copies Relickeeper including the one I foolishly wasted time fusing as I didn’t realize he could be pulled, and still only a one copy of a handfull of top tier epics from pulls.

There is really no excuse for this poor implementation. It doesn’t make this already overly greedy company more money, in fact it makes them less by frustrating and pushing away players such as myself.

I actually like this rant, didn’t intend to write it but will forward to Plarium, or whatever goofy name they call themselves, as I can only assume they never read forums such as this or these issues would be addressed.

  13. TheTodmeister

This brings up the issue for me, of just how out of touch Plarium is with their player base; or wondering even if any of them actually PLAY this game at all. They give out champions for the daily log in that they claim are perfect for X, but anyone who has the aptitude to LEARN the mechanics of the game eventually will have champions that can already do the job better.

Can do better at Spider with a number of Rares than Dark Athel.

Can do better at Clan Boss with an UNCOMMON than Yaga.

Can do better at dungeons, campaign and arena just using your starter than any of the freebie Epics — none of which really deserve to be ranked as Epic.

  14. TheTodmeister

Agreed that Dark Athel is meh for her rank. Truth is by the time we’ve gotten 6 months in, we’ve likely gotten another champion that can take care of Spiderlings for early/mid spider.

I’ve done it with two F2P accounts. You can even take care of them with 3 of 4 of the starters if you focus on getting them to 6* and spend your first 800 gems on fully mastering them. (If you chose Galek, I’m sorry.). One my main account I pulled Coldheart. On the alt account I pulled Bellower. Either of those plus Athel or Elhain, all of them booked by far less scarce Rare tomes.

By the time I clicked on my free Dark Athel, it was kind of like, eh, what do I do with -her now?? I’ve half thought of making her into an Arena nuker, but I can’t see her carrying me much farther than the maxed out starter.

  15. Ecthelion

Is it worth it to keep two Dark Athels, I just pulled one from an ancient shard but I don’t know if to use her for the other one’s skills or if I should keep it, advices?

  16. Aquadorian

@Reked, @Union, @Gil-mor: Late-game strategy for Spider 20 is to ignore spiderlings and nuke the spider mother a.s.a.p. before she can consume spiderlings (it’s possible in one or two turns with certain builds). I believe that’s the reason for the luke-warm rating for Spider. Yeah Dark Athel is great for killing spiderlings which is the early game / mid game strategy but the rating is probably based on what you’d be needing for Spider 20.

  17. Reked

Realistically, Harvest of Despair is only useful in Spider’s Den. Nearly impossible to kill 4 at level champions in one turn. So basically no buffs or advantage and it only comes around every 5 turns anyway (then 4 @ Cooldown). I disagree with the rating on Spider Den as well. It is designed for this dungeon.

  18. Kaz Vorpal

Isn’t Dark Athel specifically specialized for Spider’s Den?
She has a slow, and gets an extra turn if she kills ten or more enemies, which only would ever work with spiderlings.
Surely she merits more than a generic three stars in the ratings above.

@majax: Elhain, Athel and Kael can perform the same job of clearing mobs quickly as Dark Athel when they are built correctly in Arena, Campaign and Dungeons 1~15 too. I also used Uncommon Champion Saurus who could also clear early Nightmare Campaign with 3 fodders under 30 seconds. I believe that Dark Athel should bring more to the table since she is an Epic Champion whose skills require a lot of Epic Skill Tomes that are very scarce in-game (unless those Skill Tomes are acquired from Shop by paying cash).

  20. majax

Imho, Dark Athel is one of the best heroes for fast mass-cleaning of enemies and I disagree with the scoring above. For campaign (up to catacombs narbuk nightmare) and spider’s den 15, she has been one of the two basic mass-wipers (along with Queen Eva in my case). Hell, up to early nightmare campaign she is the solo-playing champion that can auto-level up three others for free anytime with a run lasting less than 1 minute for nightmare.

Personally, I’m also using her widely in Arena offense and all dungeons, as not many things can stand a maxxed DarkAthel-QueenEva wave-shock and live to tell about it. I can clean campaign stages or dungeon waves before the boss with one hit from DarkAthel.

The key to her increased efficiency though lies in a) getting her skills to max in order to get the decrease cooldowns and b) getting her masteries up, especially with Cycle of Violence, which basically enables a cycling A3-A2-A1-A3-A2-A1… continuously (plus c) equipping her with a lifesteal+divine offense set to enable full-life self-regeneration after each hit and d) boosting magic side % from GreatHall, ok…).
This quick and repeated mass-attacking capacity is her imho most interesting aspect, which makes her a lethal champion.

  21. Union

    @Gil-mor

I was having the exact same question. Even one of the admins at the game forum mentioned that Harvest of Despair, Dark Athel’s A3, was “pretty much meant for those pesky spiderlings”. Spider’s den is the only place where she (Dark Athel) can kill 6 or even 10 enemies at once since all the other places have 5 max.

  22. Gil-mor

She is specifically designed for Spider’s Den… If she doesn’t get 5* there, where???

@phoenix: Thanks for highlighting the Dark Athel Mastery issue. It has been rectified 🙂

    CLAN BOSS, DUNGEONS
Too many masteries on the 3rd row.
