Belz the Reckoner Champion Lore Synopsis
The Demonspawn Perkas Childeater, a fearsome horned monster, wreaks havoc in the southern Winterlands. Known for terrorising the locals and attacking shipwreck survivors, he poses a formidable threat alongside his followers. Among these is Belz the Reckoner, an Orc infamous for his acts of cruelty, including abductions, thefts, and murder. Belz’s deeds ranged from extinguishing the Blackcrag Point watchfire, causing a devastating shipwreck, to orchestrating the destruction of Mountshadow village with an avalanche. Despite his reputation, Belz harboured an unusual memory of Sir Nicholas, whose disappointed words lingered in his mind, hinting at the Orc’s potential for redemption.
Belz’s relentless villainy failed to earn the approval of Perkas, who belittled and abused him despite his efforts. Insults about Orc-kind and accusations of cowardice from his master began to erode Belz’s pride. These harsh realities, combined with the haunting words of Sir Nicholas, eventually planted the seeds of doubt in the Orc’s allegiance. Tired of the endless cycle of destruction and humiliation, Belz resolved to seek out Sir Nicholas, knowing he must prove his change of heart to escape the wrath of his former master.
Determined to demonstrate his sincerity, Belz captured a dangerous ally of Perkas, Olfin Darktongue, a Dark Elf responsible for countless atrocities. Belz subdued Olfin, severed his tongue, and presented him as an offering to Sir Nicholas. Kneeling in submission, the Orc pleaded for forgiveness. Moved by Belz’s actions and recognising the spirit of redemption central to Yuletide, Sir Nicholas granted him mercy. From that moment, Belz vowed to atone for his past by punishing evildoers, capturing Perkas’ followers, and delivering gifts to the Winterlands’ children under the watchful eyes of Sir Nicholas and his allies.
Belz’s transformation astonished many but left others, like Firrol the Barkhorn, sceptical. Despite Firrol’s lingering mistrust, Belz remained unwavering in his commitment. He carried a magical chained sack, serving as a prison for the mischief-makers he apprehended. Each year, he worked tirelessly during Yuletide, earning the cautious approval of his new allies and a sense of purpose he never found under Perkas’ rule.
Though his whereabouts outside Yuletide remain a mystery, Sir Nicholas believes Belz spends his time visiting Orc clans, inspiring them to rise above their former ways. Whatever his activities, Belz returns every year more devoted to spreading kindness and justice, proving that even the most notorious villain can find redemption.
