This method requires you to have a powerful PC (with minimum CPU of 4 cores and 8GB RAM) to run 2 or more multiple clients of MapleStory smoothly. Previously, hardcore MapleStory players create multiple Windows User accounts (login and logout temporarily) within a single PC which is kinda of a hassle but this method was patched. Another old school method was to setup 1 MapleStory client in each PC or Laptop so that they can have their mule (e.g. Beast Tamer/Bishop/Phantom) to buff up their main character for additional stats to increase their damage, EXP rate, etc. This method still works today but incurs higher electricity consumption. Some players might not have the luxury to own more than 1 PC/Laptop. Therefore, these players turned to running MapleStory on VMWare (aka Virtual Machine). This method can also apply to other MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game).
Pre-requisites
- Install VMware Pro 12
- Install MapleStory on Windows 10 Operating System hosted by VMware Pro 12
Backup Registry
The methods below requires you to edit your registry, therefore, before you start poking into the system registry, its best to backup its state, so you can revert back should you modified it incorrectly.
- Run your VMware Guest OS.
- Go to START → Run or Press Windows Key + R
- Type in “regedit” without quotes.
- Go to File > Export > Type in a File Name.
- Make sure tick “All” in the “Export Range” section located at the bottom.
- Click Save
To undo/revert your Registry Changes:
- Double-click on your exported (.reg) registry file. NOTE: If you exported this registry file from VMware Guest OS, its meant for VMware Guest OS, not Host OS! and vice versa. If you copy this (.reg) file out from VMware Guest OS and used it on your Host OS, it will corrupt your system!
- Next you’ll be prompted with a message in a Registry Editor window.
- Click the Yes button.
- Assuming the registry key(s) import was successful, you should receive the following message in a Registry Editor window: “The keys and values contained in [REG file location] have been successfully added to the registry.”
- Click the OK button in this window.
- Restart your computer.
Overwriting DriverDesc in VMWare Guest OS Registry
- Run your VMware Guest OS.
- Go to START → RUN → Type in: “Regedit” (without double quotes)
- Navigate and Change this entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
- Double Click on “DriverDesc” and erase the value. (e.g. for VMWare is “VMware SVGA II” without double quotes)
- NOTE: DO NOT DELETE DriverDesc, if you do this Themida will look for other entries in your registry that tell it you are running MapleStory inside VMware.
- NOTE: If you’re using W7 in your VMware, there are several “DriverDesc” you need to change. Use the Find tool of regedit (ctrl+F)
- Close your VM Guest OS
- In your host OS, Find your Virtual Machine configuration (*.vmx)
- Add the following text listed in “VMX Settings” below into your .vmx file
- Restart VMware Guest OS. Run MapleStory.
- If MS doesn’t pop up after HackShield loads; reinstall MS and install the Redistributable Packages and .Net Framework 4.
VMX Additional Settings
Add the following settings to your .vmx file (tested working for Windows XP/7) which is located in your Host OS. Replace the double quotation listed here with the one from your (.vmx) file. The browser had somehow modified the double quotes here to be curving/slanting. (Note on May 9th 2017: Using monitor_control.restrict_backdoor is sufficient for MapleStory. If this does not work for you, you might need to enable other properties below).

isolation.tools.setPtrLocation.disable = "TRUE"

Common Issues/Errors and Fixes
[Error] VMWare Workstation – The vmware tools should only be installed inside a virtual machine.
- Turn off your VMware Guest OS.
- Remove the changes you have inserted in your (.vmx) file which are the lines listed above in “VMX Additional Settings”.
- Restart VMware Guest OS.
- In your VMware Worksation, click “VM”, select “Reinstall VMware Tools”
- This will automatically pop up the VMWare Installation. Tick “Repair” should you wish to fix anything inside.
- Click OK
- Once done, add in back your “VMX Additional Settings”, otherwise Themida will prevent you from playing games on Virtual Machine.
[Error] VMWare Workstation – Dictionary problem.
Make sure that the edited .vmx file does not contain any duplicate entries (duplicate lines of codes) and no spaces in between each dot! Also check the double-quotation, it should be same as the one listed in (.vmx) file. The double quotes should not be curving/slanting. If it is curving, then simply replaced it with the default one (just select, copy and replace the ones you have inserted)
[Error] Themida – Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine. Hacking attempt detected. MapleStory will close.
Add the extra information listed in “VMX Additional Settings” into your .vmx file located within your VMware host installation folder.
[Error] Maplestory stuck on mushroom loading screen.
If you encounter this issue where you start up Maplestory normally and then it just gets stuck on the screen where it says Loading… and shows a Mushroom, perform CTRL+ALT+DELETE (once), it will show a TaskManager panel in Windows XP or a selection of menu in Windows 7 (select Start Task Manager). Then open the “Application” Tab, select “MapleStory”. Right-click it and select “Go to Process” Right-click the selected Process → “Set Priority” → “High”. Close the TaskManager Panel and click on the MapleStory tab to enter it.
[Error] Tried to invite my mule into party but MapleStory messages in-game : You can’t join this party because of an IP Restriction
You will need to setup your VMware Guest OS connection correctly. To correct this:
- Right-click on the Internet Connection Icon in windows at the bottom-right corner of the screen, select “Open Network and Sharing Center”.
- Click “Local Area Connection Status”. Click “Properties”.
- A window will pop up “Local Area Connection Properties”.
- Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”. Click “Properties” button.
- Tick “Use the following IP Address”
- Set “IP Address:” 192.168.1.150 (The first 3 values remain same, but the forth section can be any value)
- Set “Subnet Mask” : 255.255.0.0 (This is for Guest OS, Host OS uses 255.255.255.0)
- Set “Default Gateway” : 192.168.1.1
- Set “Preferred DNS Server” : 8.8.8.8 (This is actually Google DNS, bypasses your country blocked/banned websites)
- Set “Alternate DNS Server” : 8.8.4.4 (This is actually Google DNS, bypasses your country blocked/banned websites)
- Shutdown your VMware Guest OS, and return to your VMware Workstation. Click Edit → Virtual Network Editor
- Select your VM connection (e.g. VMnet8 = used for Guest OS)
- Set this VM Internet Connection to “Bridged (Connect VMs directly to the external network) → Bridged to your Motherboard Ethernet (e.g. Qualcomm Atheros AR8161/8165 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller NDIS)
- Click OK to save and apply changes.
- Restart VMware Guest OS and MapleStory.
Tick “Use the following DNS server addresses”
[Error] “MapleStory.exe – .netframework initialization error. Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application.”
[Solution] Download and install Microsoft .NET FRAMEWORK 4.5 for Windows 7 OR Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5/4.0 for Windows XP.
[Error] “ijl15.dll is missing or corrupt”
Make sure you add ijl15.dll to your firewall exception as well as your antivirus exception list. If this issue persists then re-install MS with your antivirus turned off then doing all of the exception adding.
[Error] “Can not find Redirector.dll”
If you are playing private server MapleStory, some would use Redirector.dll. Therefore, add the Nexon folder to your virus exception. Temporarily disable your antivirus and re-download the private-server.exe client. After that add it to your Nexon folder and enable your antivirus again.
[Error] “MSVCR110.dll is missing”
Add the MS folder to your antivirus exceptions. Download the following file here and install (x86 for 32-bit and x64 for 64-bit systems).
[Error] “MSVCP100.dll is missing”
Download and install the following (x86 for 32-bit and x64 for 64-bit systems)
Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) from Official Microsoft Download Center

[Error] “This is not a valid Win32 application”
Make sure your MapleStory client is currently added to your firewall/antivirus exception list. If this issue persists after doing so, please re-download the client. If there are any mistakes, correct it and resave the file before rerunning your VMware guest OS.
[Error] “Can’t find a .NET runtime”
You need at least .NET Framework 3.0 to run the program. Get it from the Microsoft website.
Unable to patch due to missing/deleted MapleStory Video Cut Scenes
If you deleted your .avi video files in MapleStory installation folder to skip cut scenes like I did you may need these to update to v145 if you deleted them completely. All you have to do is unpack them into your nexon folder.

Known Bugs/Issues
VM’ed Maple does lag a lot more than if you were to run it on your host operating system. There isn’t any way around it as far as I know as it is on Nexon’s end as it didn’t use to lag as bad as after they started scanning to see if Maple was being run in a VM. You must bear with it if you’re going to use this fix. Full screen alleviates some of the lag, and I believe Mac users don’t have that big of an issue when VM’ing Maple. You can try to lower the MapleStory graphics by going into “System Options” (in-game) → Set graphics to “Normal (Fast)” and “Effects (Fast)”.

Speeding Up your VMWare Workstation
The guide below uses Windows 7.
- Edit → Preferences → Memory → Tick “Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM”.
- Start → Run → Type “services” → Enter → Browse for “Superfetch” → Right-click → Properties → Startup Type “Manual” → Click “Stop” → Click “OK” (Note: If you are running VMware on SSD, SuperFetch can be set to Manual, HDD would be “Automatic – Delayed on Start”)
- Start → Run → Type “View advanced System Settings” → Enter → Click “Settings” under Performance → Tick “Adjust for Best Performance” → Click OK. → Click OK
- Change the Monitor Color and Resolution to 1280×1024 (16bit instead of 32bit) Right-click Desktop → “Screen Resolution” → “Advanced Settings” → Click “List All Nodes” Button → Select 16bit color depth and smaller resolution (e.g. 1280×1024 or 1024×768) → Click OK to Save Changes.

For those running into the “Running Maplestory in a virtual machine is not allowed” error, it looks like Nexon stepped up their game wit their nexon guard a month ago to detect virtual machines. Meaning this method currently does not work for VMWare and you get kicked out after some time.
I also have the problem, the game kicks me for suspicious behavior in VM.

Hello.I have a problem with BlackCipher it appears,it doesnt let me play on VMWare.
I play another Nexons game called Vindictus and it also uses BlackCipher so I think this topic will work for me as well,since its the same company and anti-hacking program.
My problem is when I log in,after chosing charater and enter in the game,I have about 20 seconds before game shows me message “The game will close after 10 seconds”.
From what I read the problem is in BlackCipher,it thinks VMWare is a hacking program or something,since I dont have any problems entering from host OS.
I did everything from this guide and before in 2018 it worked,then I stoped play and now came back but it appears they change something in BlackCipher,so now it requires more manipulations than before to make it work on VMWare or maybe I miss something.

@Philip: I have tested VMWare on MapleStory with Intel 5820K (6 cores at 4GHz) with 32GB RAM and it works as expected. You may need a powerful desktop that has more than 4 cores to run multiple VMs smoothly on 1 machine.

Hello, I’ve been trying to setup a working virtual machine in my computer, but it is always crashing at the character selection screen.
When I put the priority to high, it let me to select the character, but as soon as I click on play the game, a black screen appears and it just doesnt do anything.
Sometimes I made it to login, but it freezes as soon as it joins to the game.
Any advice? Tried everything, and I am a little lost.

The value for the DriverDesc in regedit was somehow there again after the update, just had to remove it and it’s working again! 🙂
Using vmware 14 pro and win10 os, was working fine until an update hit and now my .vmx file is corrupted whenever i add the additional settings. Without it, maplestory cant be launched.

I had one VM with W8 that worked nice in GMS but I lost it and been trying for hours to make a new one. Used w7 and w10, did all the regedits, installed the tools, edited the VMX file and I cant get Nexon Launcher to start, getting the same error in both: “Please check your internet conection and try again”. Tried brigde and NAT connection to no effect, any suggestions?

Tried with VMWare 14 Pro with a Windows 10 OS worked fine, Windows 10 ISO can be downloaded from Microsoft website if needed. Had trouble with no internet connection but changing the setting in VMWare from NAT to bridged solved it.

So after running this .bat file as admin, this error doesn’t pop up anymore when I try to open maple. But now the thing is maple just won’t start. I checked the task manager and it seems that maple just runs in the background for a while and simply kills off. I was hoping you might know a way to fix this problem? 🙁
@David: Sorry, I do not have any idea on how to fix it. Perhaps you can try reinstalling MapleStory on the newly created Windows 7 Operating System (OS). Otherwise, the workaround would be using Windows 10. If you are running on more than 4 core system, it should definitely help in smoothing the lag. For my case, I dedicated 2 cores and 8GB ram for the VM Guest OS.

I have been using VMWare 12.0 and windows 7 for a while and everything worked fine until it showed me a network error while trying to run maplestory. I decided to redownload the machine and tried windows 10 but that was laggy as hell so I redownloaded windows 7.
I changed regedit and .vmx settings but Maple doesn’t seem to show up after clicking Play,
it sometimes shows a “maplestory not responding / working” error or just allows me to click on the play button again without anything popping up.
Do you have any advice on how to fix it?

I have same problem with sin1111.
From last update I can’t run maple on VM. I can play a short time, 1-5 minutes and it close with alert “NGS Hacking Detected (0xD1900202)”.
I update both windows and maple story patch (I play official Thailand server)
I tried to create new VM without windows update and it notworking. May be I missing something.
Already change setting in regedit and modify .vmx file.
Do you have any clue?

@sin1111: Have you tried changing the settings in regedit? My Virtual Machine that is running Windows 10 with latest update is still able to run MapleStory using the settings above.
With the auto update of window 10 (Cortana), i was not able to run maple on VM. It stated unable to run with virtual machine. Please help, any idea to fix it?

For this having issues with this on vm windows 10, a few things.
No Internet:
If you have no internet go to Edit > Virtual Network Editor and press in the right lower corner on Change Settings, now select a network and click “Remove Network” for all of them.
Then click “Add Network” and in the VMnet Info select “Nat (shared host’s IP adress with VMs” and click apply.
Next go to VM > Removable Devices > Network Adapter > Settings and in the Network connection box select “Custom: specific virtual network” and select the one you just made (probably VMnet0 (NAT)) press ok and you should have internet, it now shares internet with your host. And this still allows you to run maple.
Error: Check you internet connection or try again later
So after you installed windows 10 on your VM you go to your registry as suggested in the tutorial. When going to the path and you notice that DriverDesc is NOT “VMware SVGA II” but something like “Microsoft basic display adapter” don’t change it.
By removing it and leaving it empty the nexon launcher starts throwing that error. You do still have to add those entries to the .vmx file.
Other internet related issues.
Maplestory relays on running flash items, wat i recommend is after installing windows to first download Firefox and set it as default (just close it and reopen and it should ask) This allows Maplestory to use the html5 stuff from there to run wat ever its needed.
It displays this as an internet error so its a bit tricky

right click desktop -> display setting -> Advanced display settings -> Display adapter -> list all mode.

Alright well i got it working after only putting monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “TRUE” into the .vmx file. Using windows 10 and VMware 12 if anyone else has the same issue.
I don’t get it. I’ve done everything within the guide and my game won’t start up, hackshield doesn’t pop up, and there is no error message.
@tqk2811: Ensure that all of the .vmx settings is in and check in registry for the VMware SVGA II.
But at first and second times. (with additonal setting in *.vmx)
Maplestory can run nomaly. (vmware tools working)
When i shutdown VR Machine (VRM) and increase ram to 3Gb -> start VRM
-> vmware tools not working -> maplestory run and close after 2-5 seconds (with no error) (hackshield flash not show)
But when i remove all additonal setting of *.vmx, maplestory say can’t run in V.R machine
I’m using window 10 64 bit
When i add all setting in to *.vmx -> start vr window -> vm tools not working -> maplestory can’t start.
How to fix it 🙁
If you have any more tips to help speed up maplestory any and all on the VM it would help still seems to be quite clow especially when moving the mouse.
Took many hours of deleting all the old vmware 10 and windows 7 vm files and such and then finding a ‘working’ and ‘legit’ wmware 12 program and activating the new windows 10 on each of them but in the end it works thanks to your amazing guide you keep up to date. Thank you, always use your skill builds and this helped me last year and today as well.
@sd: I have not tested it on private servers. Therefore, I’m unable to advice you on this.

That was it! I deleted my windows7 installation, made a new windows 10 virtual machine. i removed only the one “DriverDesc” contents inside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
With the .vmx file, when i only entered the first line: monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “TRUE”
the game wouldn’t start up for me.
I then pasted the rest of the additional lines, restarted the VM then it worked!

I found the .vmx file, and added all the “VMX Additional Settings” but when i start up MS, it still says “Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine.” and I cannot proceed with running the game. I copied and pasted all the additional settings to the very top of the .vmx file. (Actually right after the “.encoding = “windows-1252″” line.
@spensa: To get a Windows 8 product key, you will need to purchase it from your local physical/online computer store. (e.g. Micro Center in USA).
@Ascirdla: To reduce the lag in Guest OS MapleStory, you could try not to install the VMWareTools so you do not need to implement all of the registry into VMX except for this registry: monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “TRUE” – with this the login screen is a little faster than the one with VMWareTools installed.
@tonyd: You can find the default location for virtual machines (.vmx) by going to the “Menu Bar” >> “Edit” >> “Preferences” >> “Under ‘Workspace’ category”. If during the installation, you set it at a custom folder, you need to browse to that folder instead of the one specified in the “workspace’ category.
The other method is go to the “Menu Bar” >> “VM” >> “Settings” >> Under the “Options” Tab >> View the “Working Directory” text field. This should point you to the .vmx files. (The custom folder you have selected during installation).
seems like the most common question is where is the .vmx file. (I haven’t been able to locate it either). Maybe its because i’m not using vmware 12 pro? and just the free one?

I am currently trying to set up my VMWare to run MapleStory in it. Thing is, when i run Maplestory from the Nexon Launcher the game doesn’t show up. Nexon Launcher disables the play button as if the application is running then after awhile it enables back the Play button. I reinstalled the game 3 times and this is still happening and i dont know what else to do. I’m using VMWare 12 Pro and Win 10 x86.

@Nick: The one I have tested is VMWare Workstation Pro 12. However, I have not tested MapleStory on the free version.

@Justin: What Windows operating system are you using for the guest operating system in VMWare? For me, I just paste the code based on the naming such as monitor.phys_bits_used, I put the monitor_control.restrict_backdoor below it, something like that. For the registry, I did not change anything since the description is not VMWare SVGA for Windows 10 Pro on Guest OS without the VMWare Tools installed. With VMWare Tools installed, you will need to edit the registry to remove the keyword “VMWare” from “SVGA driver” and include all the properties as defined in the guide above into vmx.

Do I need to paste the codes for the VMX file anywhere within the VMX configuration specifically? Can I place them after the ?

@all: Tested working on my PC Windows 10 Pro as guest OS using VMWare Workstation 12 Pro on May 9th 2017. Able to run MapleStory smoothly with Intel 5820K 6 core CPU (Intel Virtualization Technology enabled + Intel VT-d enabled). Will be revising the guide above on how to obtain smoother gameplay.

When I click play on maple story, it gives me the command prompt to launch maplestory but then hack shield doesn’t pop up and maple story doesn’t run

@Ascirdla: If that’s the case, the settings are required to allow MapleStory to be played on virtual machine operating system. My MapleStory on VM will lag too when I apply these settings.
@Elroy Kenjins: vmx file should be located at the same place where your virtual OS is saved. For instance, if I saved it on another drive, it would be on my other drive apart from my C: drive.
I’m having the same problem as “Fee” After adding the settings, there is lag and the virtual machine takes longer to load. But without adding these settings. Maple couldn’t start!
Oh and my host OS is windows 10 if that helps!

Yeah its only for 30 days cause it won’t let you turn on the virtual machine without a key code.
@Fee: If the proposed settings are not modified, are you still able to play MapleStory in Virtual Machine? If yes, then I recommend you to not use them as it causes lag to your VM.

Hey Ayumi, so I tried using a proxy server instead of using the DNS server method because I can’t un-bridge VMNet0, there’s only 1 thing to bridge to so I can’t use the method. The game works when I login without being connected to a proxy but when I try with the proxy it crashes with a runtime error saying “abnormal program termination.” Any ideas why this happens or how to solve my problem with VMNetwork Editor?

I realized the (monitor_control.disable_directexec = “TRUE”) makes the VMware lags alot. But without it couldn’t start maple. Solution please!!
Is there anyway to start maple on a VMware without copying those VMX ADDITIONAL SETTINGS text? I realized those make my VMware laggy and unplayable in maple at some maps. But without those text I can’t start maple.
@Hugo Martez: Try logging into MapleStory one PC at a time first, with full screen (not window). If full screen does not work, try window mode. If this works, you will need at least 2 monitors (1 for your client and one for VM/Virtual-Machine).
I’m facing this problem whereby my client on my desktop closes and a window stating “NGS Hacking detected” pops up, however the one in my vmware remains fine. Is there a solution to this?
@LUcas Martins: I have yet to test with the latest VMWare Workstation Build 10.0.7 – but I can confirm the old version works on my Windows 7 running MapleStory 1. If the VMWare is not available for free download, you could purchase it if its within your budget. If you find the setting up complicated, I would highly recommend you to purchase a secondary computer/laptop and run MapleStory from there.

@Raddy: Does it work on your regular Windows Operating System? If yes, try copying that Hackshield folder into the VM MapleStory Hackshield (overwrite the folder, but before you do, keep a backup copy of the VM’s one in case anything goes wrong, you can revert back!)

Hi there I can’t seem to start maplestory (sort of).
I see the Nexon + Wizet logo fine, then see the Maplestory Logo for the cutscene, but then the screen freezes and either freezes on this logo or goes black, which after 10 minutes, disconnects me from the game.

Why does maplestory start up so very slow? I have enough ram to support it putting 2 cores and 4gb of ram on it. My host has a 6 core and 8 gigs of ram on it. I also moved the maplestory from my host to my guestos, maybe that is effecting it?

How do you install Windows XP on VM 12 Pro?
@nick: It’s in your computer current/host operating system (OS) that you used to play MapleStory, not inside the VM (Virtual Machine). The .vmx should be located in the same area where you installed the VM in your host OS. Ensure that your VM is shutdown before you perform any changes to the (.vmx) settings.

Locating virtual machine files on a Windows host:
The default location for virtual machine files is the folder My Virtual Machines in the My Documents folder of the home directory of the user who created the virtual machines. If you are logged in as this user, you can:

3. Click OK to see the home directory.
If you are still unable to locate the virtual machine files, you must search the host hard drive for virtual machine configuration files.:
To search the host hard drive:
1. Open a command prompt. For more information, see Opening a command or shell prompt (1003892).
2. Enter this command:

This returns directory paths to all virtual machine configuration files. Based on the name of the virtual machine whose files you are looking for, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the location of the directory containing its .vmx file.

I5 3570 8GB, my issue is, the vmware is running smooth for first two weeks, after that, it lags from system booting already.
@Ciffan: What machine are you running with MapleStory in VM and also the specification of it (example: Intel i7 6th /AMD xx GHz CPU, XX RAM. For me, I ran with 8GB RAM allocated per VM running with an Intel CPU 3770K 4.2GHz no lag. Only starting and playing MapleStory lags.

I followed your guild and it works very well, just that after 2 weeks, the vmware becomes very laggy, impacting host pc as well. I tried re-install the virtual machine again, it lasts for two weeks again.
Is it the KNOWN BUGS/ISSUES you mentioned? but in my case, the VMware itself is laggy before opening maplestory.

@Person: It should work with the latest GMS Reborn Updates. I do not have the software installed on my Windows 10 though. I have tested this on VMWare on Windows 7.

Another note is, I think adding the line to the VMX file will disable copy & pasting.
Bypass 1 – Install everything before you edit your vmx file.
Bypass 2 – Simply go to settings > hard drive > map > untick read-only. Allows you to use it like a regular harddrive and copy/paste things without a hitch. Power must be OFF.
Bypass 3 – Create a shared folder/etc. This step’s somewhat tedious, doubly so for just MS.
Dec. 04, 2015. Still works great.
Tips for others – If you have a strong enough PC, you can simply clone and use the same harddrive to save space. Works like a charm. Really helps with getting into R&J. Also works great for that extra Kanna boost.
Cloning’ll take an extra 2gb, but it’s temporary and is returned to you. No real issues encountered.

@Hogrider: I have not tested it yet with GMS V167, perhaps someone has here. I have already uninstalled the software though since I seldom used it for playing dual characters.

@Matt: Ensure both your host and VM task manager does not have MapleStory running in the background. This also includes closing any other MapleStory related programs like HackShield/BlackCipher running in the task manager.

@Yang: Open “.vmx” file in you VMWare host installation folder with Notepad/Notepad++. Then, copy the extra information listed in the “VMX Additional Settings” into that “.vmx” file. CTRL+S to save it. Re-run MapleStory in VM. Ensure the double quotes inside the “.vmx” file is correct (the content copied inside should have the same curly braces as the existing one).

Like you have said before, editing the registry is a must.
Windows 7 unfortunately have many DriverDesc…
If someone kind could pinpoint which ones, it would be more helpful
That is where the current guides are lacking and add to much frustration
Otherwise, it is running now, so I am happy.
My vmware is running Windows 7 64 bit.
@Jacky: If it says that maplestory is already running, press control+alt+delete to bring up the windows task manager, and hit the processes tab. Look for a process named maplestory.exe, and click on it, then press on end process, and yes. Sometimes when maplestory failes to launch, the process stays running, which doesn’t let you try and launch it again, I’ve had this glitch once or twice.
@Curty: Have you installed all the latest drivers for that particular VM?
@ray: Error Code = 207 / Initialization Error (0x00000207) / WinLicense /Thermidia: Sorry, this application cannot run under a Virtual Machine.
HackShield error 207 occurs when it has detected that it is operating in a virtual machine environment. In order to prevent or reduce hacking, virtual machines are discouraged from use.
This error may also occur if you have the game set to run in compatibility mode for another Operating System. Please disable compatibility mode options before playing.
Solution: Have you done this part thoroughly : Overwriting DriverDesc in VMWare Guest OS Registry (see this section in the guide above).
Had problems running Maplestory on Windows 10, so I created a VM with windows 7 and it runs very smoothly using settings posted above.

I didn’t get an error code, but when i did install maple and ran it, it says “Another instance of maplestory is already running.” I gave up and now I’m giving it another try lol.

@juan: In step 7 of “Overwriting DriverDesc in VMWare Guest OS Registry”, you will need to copy the contents under “VMX Additional Settings” of this guide, then paste it inside your “.vmx” file.

1. Have you went into your PC’s BIOS and enable Virtualization?
2. When first making a new Guest OS, click Next or Skip on the screen that asks for the Installation key. If you put a google-searched key, delete and remake the whole Guest OS.
3. You may not have all the redist packages. Google “all visual c++ redistributable packages for games”. Don’t get anything from Microsoft.
4. Make sure VMware Tools is installed.

@Edward: Below are 2 methods, try them in sequence.
1st Method: You need to disable any firewall you have and/or try the opposite, by enabling windows firewall and putting all of nexon’s .exe into the exception list.
2nd Method: Search: “Devices”, Open Device Manager, Go to Network Adapters, Disable any adapter with Microsoft Loopback Adapter in its name. Restart may be necessary.

@Bruah: I couldn’t test it right now be because all of my characters (including mules) are unable to get passed the MapleStory pin screen. After entering it, MapleStory just shows “Unable to log on to game server” when running even without a VM.

Same guy here, which troubleshooting section are you talking about? I’ve updated everything on the VM so it’s a current up to date Windows 7 computer. I installed both vccredist x86 and x64 and still no luck.

If you’re getting a problem with it crashing and it’s saying NGClient.aes is the module, make sure you go to the trouble-shooting section and download + install every single one there is for 64-bit operating system and make sure your .net framework is up to date using Windows update. That fixed my problem.
I’m running into a problem with the guest OS, I followed all the instructions and whenever I try to launch Maple, it just crashes. Crash reports state that NGClient.aes is the module at fault. Any way to fix this?
I’m getting stuck at the Wizet logo when in fullscreen. I try to put it in windowed mode during the startup sequence, but everytime after it locks up without the nexon startup or wizet logo. I’ve tried this with Windows 7, Tiny7, and Windows XP and get the same results. What can I do differently?
@LWB: The .vmx file is located at the place where you have specified to save the OS Installation Folder when you install it in your VMWare. Use Notepad++, Sublime or regular Notepad from Windows to open and edit the VMX file. Hope that helps 🙂

sorry, cant help you there. that worked still fine. try running maplestory.exe, i got problems with the maplestorylauncher.exe
but since the last update something dosnt want to work. when the game pops up, it closes and says unknown hackshiled error. some1 knows a solution for that?
Everything works fine! BUT, when i click maplestory launcher it pops up, the yeti in corner appears and then you come to new launcher, and then it just flicks away. Gone. I can confirm that you can still run multiple copies of MapleStory with VMware if you set it up properly. You’ll have to remove most mentions of VMware from the registry, as well as following the steps in this guide.
This is working on GMS v160 Black Heaven, and I imagine it will continue to work forever.

@KL: I have encountered such problem on version 10 due to not all DriverDesc are overwritten. Will need to sieve through the registry carefully to find all the DriverDesc.
hey ayumilove, so i downloaded version 11 instead of version 10 and changed the regsitery driver desc to what version’s 11 VM but i cant seem to run maple still…i tried adding the extra VMX lines to the VMX file and i still get the error “Cant run maple on VM”. i was wondering if you had a solution to this problem.

If you have received HackShield error message on VMware 10. I recommend you to use VMware 9. Only VMware 10 have this issue. I don’t know why.
I forgot to mention I was not even running another MS in my host system. I tried it on Win XP SP3. Copied the whole folder like you said and stuff, but kept happening that, even though I actually didn’t have another copy of MapleStory running at all.

When I opens my MapleSEA through VMWare. It’ll change my resolution to 800×600, and gives me a Blackscreen. After few long minutes, this error will appear. I could see the maple’s mouse cursor while in the Blackscreen at the corner though. Hope i could get a reply from you soon.

@Ageko: Probably that would be the easiest way around for having to play more than 1 characters. There are some hardcore players who have 2-3 laptops used to create a mini-bot party just to fulfill the party quest requirement (e.g. Ludibrium PQ / Orbis PQ / Romeo and Juliet PQ) instead of waiting for players to join them, or have a Phantom character to perform HS/HyperBody/Rage/etc buff skills 🙂
Sucks to have to basically either cheat or buy another computer just to have HS/Kanna up.
I mean look at their friends over at NCSoft (Lineage + Aion) both Korean MMO’s and both allow for dual even triple (up to 3/4? for Lineage 2)

@Ageko i think it is patched idk tho, i get the same thing that maplesetory is already running, which it is on my host os not on vm.
So after doing this for a good 2 hours using both Windows 7 as the Slave and XP Prof as the slave, I have come to the conclusion I am either doing something wrong or this is patched. I keep recieving the error “Maplestory is Already running.”
I haven’t tried it with Windows 8.1 yet, but I have a copy from my school lying around somewhere. Going to try it now.
I’m running vmware on a Mac using windows 8 as a guest OS. We deleted all the DriverDesc values and we still get the error of “Maplestory is already running”. (Err 207). We havent tried renaming the values yet. We already copied and pasted the text into the vmx file. NEED HAAALP PLEASE.
lol I probably should of proof read before posting that. Another way I’ve heard people bypassing it, is to install Windows 8.1 as the guest. Hope these 2 methods will get it working for you folks 🙂 p.s ILY AYUMI!
Hey, to anywhere getting the “BlackCipher Hacking Detected : 0×00000000(0)” I’ve found a bypass that works for me, hopefully it’ll work for you too. The [DriverDesc] can no longer be left blank. I replaces mines with nvdia gtx 700, restarted and it seems to work now. Have fun mapling everyone!

Hi I would like some help on this too please ~ This has been working for me previously up until the August 28th patch and I was wondering if there was a way around it.
This was patched today. When trying to run Maplestory, it gives the error that another instance of Maplestory is running, even if it’s not open on the host.
I managed to fix it, turns out not all the driverdesc were edited.
btw, have you encountered “BlackCipher Hacking Detected : 0x00000000(0)”?
The notation is “BlackCipher has detected suspicious activity in your client, Maplestory will now close.”

For NVidia, they have this Nvidia GeForce Experience Application which you install it (comes from their official website), and once its setup, it will automatically check for updates daily and download to your PC and install for you. General Guide to update Graphic Drivers: start > control panel > Appearance and Personalization (Adjust Screen Resolution) > Click “Advanced Settings” (button) > Click “Properties” (button) > under Driver tab > click “Update Driver” button.

@Mitz: See this guide https://www.vmware.com/support/ws4/doc/running_sharefold_ws.html . Create a folder and set it as a shared folder in the VMWare Workstation. Copy your MapleStory installer .exe or just to copy the entire installed Maplestory folder from your C:\ drive into it. Open your Guest OS, and from that side, go to the : My Network Places > VMware Shared Folders > .host > Shared Folders > “YourSharedFolderName”. Copy from there to your GuestOS C: drive. Run MapleStory.exe 😀 Ensure your GuestOS is updated with Windows DirectX 10, .NET framework etc (those basic requirements) before running MapleStory.exe – I use to update the Guest OS first with the necessary drivers, then save the settings of it, then only dump MapleStory installation folder inside. So if anything happens, I can revert to the original clean state without any other software in it.
Im done creating a Guest OS , how do I get Maplestory on the Guest OS ? I cant drag and drop it because VMware tools installation keeps getting an eror called : The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete the installation.

I’ve tried all of those steps, but I still get the same error. The issue may be that my Host OS is Windows 8, while my Guest OS is Windows XP. I think my best option is to just try to get a cheap computer for multi-clienting. Thanks for the assistance, though.

2) Copy entire MapleStory installation folder from Host into Guest OS.
3) Run MapleStory in Guest OS first before running in MapleStory in Host.
This method worked for me.
The HackShield Error Code 0x00000207 (as shown in your screenshot) means Hackshield has detected that it is operating in a virtual machine environment. In order to prevent or reduce hacking, virtual machines are discouraged from use. This error may also occur if you have the game set to run in compatibility mode for another Operating System. Please disable compatibility mode options before playing.
Please ensure that your .vmx file is edited correctly and you are running the same version as your current Windows OS to reduce any issues that may occur. Also double check if you have missed out cleaning up the Guest OS registry (search for VMWare SVGA or any graphic drivers that contains VMWare) or depending on the VM software that you used to install MapleStory.
In both the Guest OS and the Host, Task Manager shows no instances of any Maple-related processes, yet I get that same error whenever I launch MapleStory within VMWare. Everything works fine on the Host OS.
@Keaton: Open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE → Click Start Task Manager), check the Processes Tab, look for MapleStory.exe, right-click it, select “End PRocess Tree”. Do the same for the HackShield and other related MapleStory apps if the process remains there. Then rerun MapleStory.

@sebastian: My PC specs to run MapleStory on VM is i7-3770K @ 4.2Ghz, GTX 760 and 32 GB (I allocated 8 GB RAM for VMWare), and the Windows OS I used is 64bit (32 bit only supports max 3.8GB Memory) I have my taskmgr opened first, the moment I double-click to run MapleStory.exe , I quickly go to the process in the task manager and set its priority as High/Realtime. I think Access Denied could be due to Windows UAC (User Account Control), set that to lowest priority should do the trick. It would take some time to load MapleStory in my situation because my CPU does not natively support VT-d (Intel’s Technology on direct accessing hardware to run VM) So it will feel laggy compared to a i7-3770. Currently the Haswell CPU Devil’s Canyon 4790K supports VT-d, which is good bargain for playing games on VMWare.
To modify the value of [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}000]. You need to install the VMware Tools into the guest os. After installed, check the regedit in the guest os again. The [DriverDesc] was show up, then modify the [VMware SVGA II] to [SVGA II], and restart the guest os.
Oh nvm, it was a feature of W7, I ‘fixed’ it. But still it says Loading and then the game closes. Should I install something else? or is it ’cause my PC won’t be able to run it?

@hopeless: The OS is similar to the one you have installed into your primary SSD/HDD in C: drive (but in this guide in showing how to play MapleStory on VM on Windows 7) Google for VMWare OS installation as there are plenty thorough guides you can refer too, especially on Youtube, or just check the official VMWare site 😀
@Sebastian: It’s ok! There were other applications using DriverDesc, so only edit the field that contains the word “VMWare”. In my case, I found xxx of DriverDesc (using regedit CTRL+F) and manually filtering all those, I found one of them contains the word “VMWare”, more specifically “VMware SVGA II” located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000. So modified that one 🙂
Hi, I installed W7 as guest OS, but when I tried to find all the “DriverDesc” regs, I noticed that there are hundreds of them, so I’m guessing when you said there were several of them, you meant only in that reg folder (0000)? if that’s the case, then I don’t see any other DriverDesc file, is that ok?

Thanks for the guide! I managed to get past Themida I think, but right after that i get Error Code -2147467259. I can’t figure out what’s the problem, I’m running it on allocated 8GB Ram and 40GB on HD, VMware Player.

2. Now you can copy and paste.
3. You need to copy and paste when there are updates.

Hi Nylsen, yeah I noticed that when I’m proof reading my guide again. Somehow the browser is interpreting my copied and pasted (.vmx) settings here as slanting/curving double quotes. I have added some notes above to require user to change the quotes.
I mean the quotation mark ” is different from what the VMware recognizes. I message your FB fanpage about this. The quotation mark that shows here on your blog is different from the quotation mark that we must input on the .vmx file, thus giving the flag error.

By the way miss Ayumi, please use ” instead of ” for the boolean flag TRUE as using ” will cause invalid flag errors for VMware.

Hi Nylsen, host OS refers to the Windows Operating System that contains the installed VMWare. The VMware is the Guest OS contained within the host OS. For instance, my host OS is Windows 7 and in VMware it can contain different types of operating systems (e.g. Windows XP, 7, Vista, 8, etc) Hope that clarifies your doubt.
