Packaging-1: The front of the box showcases C3X entire set which includes 2 satellite speakers, 1 subwoofer, 1 external amplifer and an IR (Infra Red) remote control. The rear of the box lists all of the features that C3X has to offer, and these are highlighted at the top of this review!
Packaging-2: Usually, there isn’t much details displayed on the top of packaging for most products with an exception for C3X. It has a diagram displaying the connectivity between C3X components which is handy for first time 2.1 speaker owners and also list the expected contents in the box!
Unboxing-1: Opening up the box reveals a simple cardboard holding the items below it in place. The items that can be seen at the top are dual satellite speakers, cables, remote controls and user manual guide.
Unboxing-2: Extracting the top contents including the top hard protective white foam now reveals the heavy gigantic subwoofer and the slim external amplifier.
Unboxing-3: Here are all the contents extracted from the box and starting from top left to bottom right: subwoofer, external amplifier with an X-shape design, dual satellite speakers, triple regular audio connecting cable, remote control, RCA-to-RCA cable, RCA-to-3.5mm cable and user manual guide.
Accessory-1: The 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable measures 64 inches in length. It can be used to connect your audio source devices such as PC, smartphones and music players that has a 3.5mm audio jack port to the AUX input on the top right side of the external amplifier.
Accessory-2: The RCA to 3.5mm audio cable measures 64 inches in length. It can be used similarly to the 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable, but the RCA part is connected behind the external amplifier.
Accessory-3: These 3 bundle of silver bronze colored cables are used to connect the subwoofer and satellite speakers to the external amplifier. They are measured 94 inches in length! With these long cables, you will have no trouble placing these speakers far apart.
Accessory-4: The attached power cable from the external amplifier measures 65 inches and the power plug is 2-pin.
Accessory-5: The infra red remote control has lots of buttons. Starting from top left to bottom right: Mute, Standby, Grey Button (Switch modes: SD, USB, PC, AUX), Number button (To select tracks from USB/SD), Reset, Volume Up-Down, Previous Track, Play-Pause Track, Next Track, Bass Volume, Treble Volume, Adjustment Volume Up-Down for Bass/Treble. This remote control uses a CR2032 3V Lithium Cell battery and has a thin plastic to prevent battery drain.
Accessory-6: C3X Multimedia Speaker User Manual Guide along with a notice paper on recycling end-of-life products are included in the packaging. The user manual guide is useful for users who would like to learn how to setup the speaker correctly and discover methods on using the new features.
Design-1: Both satellite speakers are identical in physical appearances. The front cover is non-removable while the rear has a hook area where you can mount it on a wall. The top is plain while the bottom has 4 anti-slip thin padding.
Design-2: The sides of these satellite speakers are plain and has a black wood texture that gives a grainy feel. This minimalist appearance allows it to easily mix in with other devices or furniture. The boxy shape makes it easy to let it lay down on its sides balance, which is perfectly great for placing underneath the monitor.
Design-3: The C3X external amplifier has undergone some new physical changes compared to its predecessor. The front has a knob for adjusting volume, treble and bass. There are a few buttons around the knob. Starting from top clockwise: Standby, Bass, Function (switch bass/treble/volume on active input), Next Track, Play-Pause Track, Previous Track, Input (PC, AUX, USB, SD) and Treble.
Design-4: The external amplifier rear has Line In for AUX and RCA (Left = White, Right = Red), SD Card Input, USB Flash Drive Input. Near the bottom, it has the speaker output for Left Satellite Speaker, Right Satellite Speaker and Subwoofer with the power button taking the bottom spot. I really like how Edifier has designed the audio output switches on this device as its much more convenient for users by flipping it out open without needing to keep the finger in place to hold the caps before inserting the audio cable. However, this user-friendly design is not incorporated in the satellite speaker and subwoofer.
Design-5: The top of the external amplifier has few lines while the bottom has a few mini holes to allow air intake to cool the hot components within. The right side of the speaker has headphone output and auxiliary input which makes it convenient for users without the need of turning the device at its back to connect.
Design-6: The subwoofer grill mesh is not removable except for special tools. There is a port hole located at the right side of this subwoofer.
Design-7: The subwoofer is supported with 4 large thick anti-slip padding.
Design-8: Here is a closeup view of the subwoofer audio input and the padding.
Setup-1: I placed both speaker satellite on its sides just below the monitor as my desk does not have sufficient space to place them on the sides of a dual monitor.
Setup-2: The subwoofer and external independent amplifier are placed below my desk. If desk is wider, I would place the amplifier on the desk so the remote control can send the signal to the amplifier more easily.
Testing and Conclusion
This 2.1 speaker system is one of the best products that Edifier has produced. When performing an audition rotation with the Edifier C3X and Edifier R2730DB, C3X ticks all the check-boxes of the minimum requirements of a good speaker. It produces crystal clear sound when playing vocal, instruments and techno, trance. All the minor details can be easily heard and not muddied by the mid or bass. Regarding the subwoofer, it can produce deep punchy bass and also capable of performing thunderous/roaring sound effects. The other thing I like about this speaker is how amazing that it can deliver the same amount of sound quality and loudness from a twin small satellites using less power. The power drawn measured through my power meter indicates it consumes approximately 4~6W but is capable of filling the entire small room with music.
1. Uses approximately half power consumption of Edifier R2730DB but delivers the same amount of loudness and quality.
2. Does not generate much heat.
3. Not very heavy compared to Edifier S series 2.1 speaker system.
4. Has a radio functionality to listen to your favorite local radio stations.
5. Can listen music via USB if it’s not connected to an audio streaming device.
6. Provides an output audio jack to plug your headphones to the external amplifier.
1. Requires more room space to fit in a subwoofer and external amplifier.
2. A little more hassle to install 2.1 speaker system since there is an external amplifier.
If Edifier were to come up with another new improvement on C3X, I would like to see the USB flash drive and SD Card input are relocated to the front of the external amplifier for easier access. In addition, a compact external amplifier will make it convenient to place on crowded desk that may have multiple widescreen monitors alongside with satellite speakers and PC peripherals (mouse, keyboard).
