What is Slice of Life Anime?

In short, its an anime about everyday life. A slice of life story is a category for a story that portrays a “cut-out” sequence of events in a character’s life. It may or may not contain any plot progress and little character development, and often has no exposition, conflict, or dénouement, with an open ending. It usually tries to depict the everyday life of ordinary people, sometimes but rarely, with fantasy or science fiction elements involved. The term slice of life is actually a dead metaphor: it often seems as if the author had taken a knife and “cut out” a slice of the lives of some characters, without concern for narrative form. It is sometimes called tranche de vie, from the French.

What is Mecha anime?

A Mecha anime basically is mildly futuristic. HOWEVER, it is not qualified as a mecha anime unless it has robots. Think of Transformers. If you find an anime with Transformer-like characters in it, it will be classified as mecha. These robots DO NOT have to walk and talk, however. Take Full Metal Panic! for example. It is classified as a mecha anime because futuristic/highly technological robots are used extensively throughout. FullMetal alchemist WOULD NOT be classified as a mecha anime. Some mistakenly say it is, because of Ed’s automail arm. However, it is not robotic, and therefore is not.

What is Seinen anime?

A seinen anime is an anime which has a target audience of older males (18 – 40). While its true that they can be distinguished by having a higher degree of sex/gore content, this isn’t always the case. Because much of the emphasis of the seinen genre is on character development and storyline as opposed to the action found in the teen targeted shonen show, its possible to mistake some seinen for shoujo, particularly when it comes to comedy series.

What is Shoujo anime?

Shoujo anime focuses more on storyline/plot and depth of character development, as opposed to action or fighting-oriented works. In my opinion, defining shoujo as ‘manga/anime for young girls’ is very antiquated. There are many works that fall into this category that are really geared towards older audiences, both female and male.
